Sick turtle checks himself into hospital

Turtles are famed for swimming thousands of miles to return to the beach where they hatched to lay their eggs.

But one sick turtle had a different homing instinct – he took himself to a hospital for injured reptiles.

Staff spotted the 35kg (77lb) loggerhead turtle in the sea near the centre in Marathon, Florida, and decided to investigate after it hung around for a few hours.

'This is the first time a turtle has ever showed up at our doorstep waiting to be admitted,' said hospital worker Ryan Butts, who found the creature. 'He has a bacterial infection. He's very thin and very weak. He needs TLC.'
