Pet rabbit gets head stuck in car engine

Lancashire firefighters are no strangers to unusual circumstances involving our furry friends, and since January 2007 they have been called out to 380 animal rescues.

But Maisie the rabbit's unusual dilemma had even the most experienced scratching their heads.

The furry adventurer managed to get her head stuck inside the engine of her owner's car.

A crew was sent to Maisie's owner's home Hampton Road, with lights flashing. And it took the efforts of a crew of firefighters and a veterinary nurse to free the four-month-old pet from the car.

But far from being an isolated incident, firefighters seem to be getting called out to more and more animal rescues.

Just this weekend a dog was rescued by firefighters after his paw became trapped in a garden fence.

The pooch got his paw stuck in the front garden of a property in Cowley Road, Ribbleton, in the early hours of Sunday. Firefighters from Preston used a hacksaw and screwdriver to cut the fence while neighbours held the mongrel, who lived nearby.

Crew manager Ewan Duncan, of Preston fire station, said: "He had been struggling a bit but he was held still. Afterwards he just trotted off."

Just a few weeks ago, firefighters became baffled when a bird often seen out at sea ended up in Preston. The crew from the city's station got a call after Church Street residents spotted a cormorant sat on a ledge.

Crew manager Paul Rigden said not even experts from the RSPCA had any idea where the bird had come from and how it had ended up so far from sea.

He said: "Apparently they are not very good fliers, so I can only assume that it has come from Preston dock or somewhere and got stuck up there."

And in August firecrews rescued a shire horse trapped in a dyke.
