GF&P says photo not a bear after all

The South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Department now says what they thought was a photo of a bear taken by a tourist near Keystone Monday turns out to not be a picture of a bear at all. After looking at this picture Monday night, GF&P conservation officer Blair Waite said he thought this was a photo of the back of a bear. But after visiting the site Tuesday, at the same time of day that the picture was taken, Waite says what's in the picture appears to be just a shadow. He says the trees cast a shadow in that spot at that time of day that looks like a bear. Waite says we do get actual sightings of wild bears here in the Black Hills every year or two.

  1. It would have been nice if Waite had taken a photo of the shadow for comparison purposes. It would have put the matter to rest conclusively.
