Hungry alligator gatecrashes riverside picnic in Florida

The irresistible smell of freshly-cooked burgers was enough to tempt this hungry alligator out of the water for a quick bite to eat.

Al fresco diners in in Homestead, Florida, had to run for their lives when the large reptile decided to join them for lunch.

After climbing up the riverbank, the alligator found himself dining alone as he tucked into the easy pickings.

‘I felt extremely apprehensive when I saw the alligator approaching,’ explained snapper Rodney Cammauf. ‘They’re obviously not fluffy rabbits so you need to be very careful with them.

‘In this particular location alligators are used to seeing people and many often throw food into the water so they have a taste for it now.

‘I guess he just thought the picnic had been set up there for him.’

The 68-year-old later returned to the scene to capture some snaps of the alligator, but from a safe distance.

‘In the end the gator was chased back into the water by someone with a bit more experience but sadly we lost all of our food,’ he added.

‘It’s certainly an experience I won’t forget in a hurry. It’s a warning to other people to watch where they set up there picnic in the future.’
