Every 8 hours a rhino is killed

South Africa has released the final rhino poaching figures for 2013. The total number of rhino poached is put at 1004. This means that all three major rhino host nations – South Africa, Kenya and India have reported their final losses for the year. Even without the rhinos killed by poachers in other minor host nations such as Zimbabwe and Namibia the total for the year is 1109. This means every 8 hours a poachers takes aim and pulls the trigger on a rhino.

2014 is almost certain to be the decisive year for rhinos across the world and whether the animal is to survive. In particular the future of the African white rhino Is on the line as it is the species most targeted by the poachers. If the vast resources and international co-operation now being bought to bear on protecting the rhino is not able to stem the killings then the future is bleak.
