Orangutan has sinus surgery at Chester Zoo – the first procedure of its kind in the UK

Thursday 17 Apr 2014 4:28 pm

We hope this patient was heavily sedated – going ape on the operating table would be the last thing this surgical team needs.

Vicky the 29-year-old orangutan was out for the count as she underwent sinus surgery – the first of its kind in the UK.

She was tended to by a Jawed Tahery, consultant ENT surgeon at The Grosvenor Hospital, along with a team of vets from Chester Zoo.
It is the first time the procedure has been carried out in the UK.

Vicky is currently staying at Chester while a new exhibit is built at her usual home turf of Blackpool Zoo.

She is expected to make a full recovery from the routine operation.
