A new marine protected area has been opened off the coast of Kaikoura on New Zealand’s south island.
The area includes a 4,696 km² whale sanctuary, which protects sperm, humpback, southern right, blue, killer and other whales that frequent the area; and a 10,416 ha marine reserve and the Ohau Point Fur Seal Sanctuary.
“Kaikoura has the most biologically rich ocean environment in the world at over 500 metres’ depth with its deep canyons so close to shore," said New Zealand's Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith.
"This extraordinary marine environment needs the recognition and protection of these new reserves, sanctuaries and the tighter fishing limits that are being signed into effect tomorrow [August 7].
