Research begins for synthetic bear bile

China’s largest bear bile pharmaceutical company KaiBao Pharmaceutical has announced it is researching synthetic alternatives.

Bear bile is used in traditional Chinese medicine and in 2012 KaiBao Pharmaceutical bought 18 tonnes of bear bile powder for use and continues to be the major outlet for industrial bear bile farms.

In a statement KaiBao says: “The project aims to develop a synthetic bear bile bioequivalent in terms of chemical composition by using poultry bile and biotransformation technology and gaining the independent intellectual property rights.

"The project will benefit the protection and sustainable using of endangered medicinal animal resources and provide raw materials with stable and controllable quality for developing new drugs and bear bile powder products. These are of great significance for the history and development of traditional Chinese medicine.”
