New Moscow aquarium will become home to wild orcas

A new aquarium is currently being built in Moscow to house and showcase recently captured wild killer whales.

Ten orcas were captured in the Far East and are currently being held on Russia’s Pacific coast. It is unknown how many of the 10 whales will be transferred to Moscow, but it seems certain that one or more of them will be moved to the city’s 75-year-old VDNKh exhibition centre, which will house a 130,000 cubic foot tank for the animals.

VDNKh is currently undergoing renovation after a large part of it fell into disrepair following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Moscow’s Cultural Affairs Department Head, Sergei Kapkov stated that he hoped the revival of the venue would be a ‘magnet for domestic and international tourism’ and make the capital a more ‘trendy’ venue. It is estimated that construction will be completed by 2015.
