A shark sighting has led to the closure of Manly beach in Sydney, with lifeguards urging people to get out of the water on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the warnings, many people were remained in the sea, according to Surf Life Saving NSW.

The alert comes as beaches further north at Newcastle remain closed for a record ninth consecutive day. They are expected to remain so into next week following shark sightings.

In Manly, a member of the public is believed to have raised the alarm after spotting an unspecified type of shark while swimming about 1.30pm.

A spokeswoman for Surf Life Saving NSW said: “We’ve got the inflatable rescue boats out to chase it away.”

“Once they can be sure there’s nothing there they’ll hopefully reopen the beach.

“The problem is there were already a lot of swimmers and surfers in the water who won’t come out.
