Chimps 'know their Green Cross Code'

Chimps in Uganda have been seen taking steps to stay safe while crossing a high-speed road that cuts through their forest home in Kibale National Park.

The asphalted, 13m (43ft) wide, two-lane road through the Sebitoli area of the park poses a problem for the wildlife travelling through their habitat.

But, by analysing dozens of observations of chimps making the crossing, scientists have found more than 90% of individuals looked right and left before and while crossing the hazardous road, sometimes standing on their feet to check for traffic.
