Islamic separatist group was behind Thailand ivory shipment

Kenya has released details that implicate the Islamic separatist group thought to be responsible for terrorist attacks on the Indian Ocean coast with the 3 tonnes of ivory seized in Thailand last month.

14 people have been arrested in connection with the shipment. Kenyan Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery has said there are links to the shipment with the illegal Mombasa Republican Council (MRC ).

The MRC are an illegal group in Kenya who are calling for the independence of the Indian Ocean coast region which is predominately Muslim in make-up. They are thought to be behind a number of massacres of communities in the region.

“Intelligence gathered so far confirms a growing nexus between poaching and financing and facilitating crime, including terrorism. In this case, we believe that this haul was meant to facilitate the activities of MRC,” he said in a statement.

The Indian Ocean Coast was until fairly recently on of Kenya’s most popular tourist regions until the activities of Islamic separatists made it into one of the most dangerous areas of the country.
