54 stingrays die of oxygen starvation at Chicago zoo

Brookfield Zoo in Chicago has closed its stingray exhibition after a tank malfunction which killed 54 animals last week

Staff are investigating the death of 54 stingrays at Brookfield Zoo, Chicago,US after oxygen levels dropped in the tank they were being kept in.

The zoo says it was a "tragic loss of animals."

Vets were called to the scene and attempted to save the stingrays but were too late.

This is not the first time the zoo has had a malfunction in one of its tanks.

Previously 16 stingrays were killed in 2008 when a tanks heating system malfunctioned.
