Classified as Endangered by the International Union for
Conservation of Nature, pygmy hippopotamuses are extremely rare in the wild,
with only about 2,000 individuals thought to be left. So it's no surprise
then that zookeepers at the Bristol Zoo in the United Kingdom are particularly
excited about the recent birth of a baby pygmy hippopotamus.
Zookeepers told BBC
News they don’t know the sex of the baby hippo yet, and as a result
haven’t decided on a name.
"The calf is looking very strong and it certainly feeds
well,” said Lynsey Bugg, assistant curator of mammals at the zoo. "It
spends short periods of time in the water but is not quite as good at swimming
as its parents.”
