Council scraps urban fox cull in face of protests

Hackney council has suspended the country's first cull of urban foxes for 30 years after protests from animal welfare groups

The first local authority to reintroduce the culling of urban foxes has been forced to suspend the scheme after a campaign by the RSPCA and other animal rights groups.

Hackney council, in east London, had announced the cull due to what it said was the severe risk posed by foxes to other animals and the potential risk to humans.

But officials have temporarily halted the scheme before a single fox has been trapped as a result of the campaign, including a petition signed by thousands of people.

Hackney announced it was to use “humane traps” in a deer enclosure in Clissold Park, Stoke Newington – three miles from where a fox was suspected of mauling nine-month-old twins Lola and Isabella Koupparis, in 2010, after entering their home through an open window.
