The northern white rhino has taken one step closer to extinction with the death of a male rhino in Kenya. This means just 6 individuals of northern white rhino remain and it is only a matter of time before another rhino species is consigned to the history books.
The male rhino was found dead on Friday at a game ranch n Kenya. Suni was the first northern white rhino to be born in captivity and was 34 years old. He lived at the famed Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
While the cause of his death is not know it is thought not to involve poaching. The Kenya Wildlife Service has arranged for an autopsy to be undertaken to discover the cause of Suni’s death.
Suni’s loss is of particular importance as he was one of only two breeding males northern white rhinos remaining on the planet. It mean the captive breeding programme to keep the species alive has received a major set back.
