Performing wild animals are still used by two circuses in the UK
After announcing in 2012 that it would prohibit the use of wild animals, publishing a draft bill detailing a planned implementation date of December 2015, Parliament is today preparing to consider a ban on such acts.
Animal Defenders International (ADI) has long-condemned the use of wild animals in circuses, and highlight that inspection reports for the two circuses licensed to use wild animals have revealed that issues raised by inspectors repeatedly are not being addressed.
Peter Jolly’s Circus and Circus Mondao both own a variety of wild animals, including snakes, tigers, camels, reindeer, raccoons, and zebra amongst other animals. In Peter Jolly’s Circus, ADI highlighted a number of concerns including water not being provided for animals in the pre-performance holding area, and water not being provided to allow the tigers to bathe, denying them the ability for natural behaviour. Other issues also addressed were; incomplete and missing veterinary paperwork; the poor condition of snake carcasses that, being in an ‘advanced‘ state of putrefaction, prevented post-mortem; tests on the remaining snakes identified A Salmonella, Clostridia, E Coli and probable cause of death from Clostridial Septicaemia.
