Yeti Hair and Footprints Found, Adduced as Evidence of Mythical Creature's Existence

October 14, 2011 6:14 AM GMT

Video proof of the Yeti finally emerged from the wilds of Siberia and presented to the international community after reports on Monday that the research team had stumbled on indisputable proof of the creature's existence.

The footage presented shows hair and footprints that are allegedly from the Abominable Snowman the research team comprised of international scientist, found a week ago in the coal-mining region of Kemerovo.

"During the expedition to the Azasskaya cave, conference participants gathered indisputable proof that the Shoria mountains are inhabited by the 'Snow Man'," the Kemerovo region administration said in a statement.

"Conference participants came to the conclusion that the artifacts found give 95% evidence of the habitation of the 'snow man' on Kemerovo region territory," the statement continued.

"In one of the detected tracks, Russian scientist Anatoly Fokin noted several hairs that might belong to the yeti," it added.

The research team had been searching the area for signs of the Yeti after sightings of the mysterious creature began pouring in from eye-witnesses. Kemerovo's governor had invited the researchers from various countries including the U.S. and Canada to search for the Yeti in the region.

The scientific community however remains unaffected by the so-called proof from the researchers. Until the hair can be subjected to genetic testing that shows it didn't come from known animals, the hair alone isn't enough to convince the scientific community about the Yeti's existence in the Siberian tundra.

Unless the researchers find more evidence, most notably a set of bones scientists can run tests on or even indisputable video evidence of the creature, the Yeti will remain just another tall tale.

Scientists Say Mythical Monster The Yeti Is Real, Lives In Siberia

Posted by JacobSloan on October 24, 2011

103770942The existence of a giant, apelike monster, alternately known as Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman, Sasquatch, et cetera, has long been scoffed at and dismissed as a hoax. However, an international team of scientists say the mythical beast is real and roaming the furthest reaches of Russia. Via TIME:
Scientists and yeti enthusiasts believe there may finally be solid evidence that the apelike creature roams the vast Siberian tundra.

A team of a dozen-plus experts from as far afield as Canada and Sweden have proclaimed themselves 95% certain of the mythical animal’s existence after a daylong conference in the town of Tashtagol in the Kemerovo region, some 2,000 miles east of Moscow. In recent years, locals there have reported sightings of the yeti, also known as the abominable snowman.

The Kemerovo government announced on Oct. 10 that a two-day expedition the previous weekend to the region’s Azassky cave and Karatag peak “collected irrefutable evidence” of yetis’ existence on the wintry plateau.

“Conference participants came to the conclusion that the artifacts found give 95% evidence of the habitation of the ’snow man’ on Kemerovo region territory,” read a statement. “In one of the detected tracks, Russian scientist Anatoly Fokin noted several hairs that might belong to the yeti,” it added. The group also discovered footprints, a presumed bed and various other markers.

The scientific community has historically disputed the existence of the yeti given scant conclusive evidence. But numerous sightings of such creatures have been reported in Himalayan countries and in North America, where it is known as Sasquatch, or bigfoot.

Tracing the steps of a yeti hunter

New book examines the life of modern-day adventurer Jordi Magraner
JACINTO ANTÓN - Barcelona - 31/10/2011

Going off in search of someone who has disappeared is a classic theme in travel and adventure stories, whether it be Captain Grant, Livingstone, Kurtz or Grabot. Spain's most original, circumspect and mythologizing literary traveler, Gabi Martínez - author of the splendid Sudd - goes after a real-life modern adventurer in his latest book, Sólo para gigantes (or, For giants only). Jordi Magraner was a Frenchman of Valencian origin who was born in Casablanca and ended up climbing the mountains of Hindu Kush in search of the Abominable Snowman, no less. He eventually fell in love with that scenery of greatness, legend and risk, and became every bit as fascinating himself as the creature he was after, before being ultimately murdered.

In Sólo para gigantes, Martínez sketches a portrait of Magraner, an extravagant individual of questionable character, who even comes across as odious at times. Displaying nothing short of obsession, Martínez explores every last aspect of his biography to the extent of exposing himself to some of the same dangers that Magraner faced, and which resulted in the latter getting his throat slit, along with an indigenous child who was his disciple, in a remote corner of Pakistan where the Taliban prospered. It is a dark, hypnotic book, the chronicle of a personal fascination that leads us to remote, majestic and Kipling-like locations in Nuristan, a hotbed of adventure throughout the centuries. The story is also a journey into the darkest and most remote corners of the human soul.

One rarely finds a writer who has been so affected by his own book. Martínez seems to literally have been sucked up by the story. He looks lean and tormented, as though he and Magraner had collided at some existential crossroads. "You talk about the Yeti and you get smiles," he says without the slightest hint of a smile, sitting in the lush garden of the cozy Hotel Alma in Barcelona. This is a very appropriate place to meet, and not just because of the plants, but also because "alma" is the way Russians refer to the Yeti or Abominable Snowman.

"Someone who goes off in search of the Yeti, or Barmanu as he is known in Hindi, is someone I like from the get-go. But when you see that this is just the tip of the iceberg of a fascinating life, you feel compelled to go deeper into the story, which is the kind of story that deserves to be told," he says. The book, which he describes as "a non-fiction novel," teeters on the edge of reality, but the author emphasizes that when you have such an incredible story as Magraner's to work with, "you don't need to make anything up."

Martínez notes that the process of writing all of his books has changed him in some way, but none as much as this one. Magraner had very dark, repulsive sides to him, and even a fascist streak. And then there is the sexual issue. "I was aware, while I was writing about him, that there were aspects of his personality that would be unsettling and reprehensible to the reader. But at the same time there are also many positive ones. For instance, his decisive contribution to opening a humanitarian aid route through the mountains thanks to his relationship with Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Lion of Panjshir, or his determination to defend the local traditions of the Kalash pagans, who are surrounded by Muslims. That is why I got into the story. It afforded an exceptional opportunity to explore the human condition, for better and for worse."

The writer underscores that Magraner was a man of action and a real character who had the privilege of experiencing a period of historical change in one of the most extraordinary spots in the world. He was someone who went off in search of a dream (although he did not find the Yeti) and who saw how international circumstances turned his piece of paradise into a living hell. It was simply not the same roaming the most abrupt areas of the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan in fatigues and infrared glasses during the 1980s, and to do so following 9/11.

Gabi Martínez follows Magraner's adventures up until his mysterious murder in 2002, at the age of 43. His dreams of greatness and pristine mountains, his interest in the natural sciences which derived into cryptozoology (his thesis on the Yeti is based on the work of Bernard Heuvelmans, author of Sur la piste des bêtes ignorées (or, On the trail of unknown beasts), his expeditions, his failed attempts at earning respectability in scientific circles, his progressive immersion into Kalash society, his knowledge of the land and the people, all made him someone who amounted to something in the area.

In Magraner's story, there is an increasing disenchantment and dulling of the senses. There were even accusations of pederasty. "It is one of the hypotheses for his murder, along with espionage or drug trafficking. I merely make note of it," says the writer. The crime was never solved. "The police investigation was pitiful. There is an interest in not having people know more about the case."

As for his own theories, Martínez says that, "Magraner was a bother. It was easy for some people to believe that the zoologist was in fact a spy. He was in the way, and he was disposed of."

Seattleite stars as skeptic on Sasquatch series

A two-hour special, "Finding Bigfoot: Birth of a Legend," airs Oct. 30 on Animal Planet. In this outing, a team of Sasquatch hunters, which includes Seattle's Ranae Holland, traipses through a California redwood forest to visit the site where the Patterson-Gimlin footage of a supposed Bigfoot was filmed 50 years ago.

By Rob Owen
Special to The Seattle Times

There's something comfortably predictable about Animal Planet's "Finding Bigfoot." Each week, a team of Sasquatch aficionados research reports of Bigfoot sightings and spend a night in the woods searching for the hairy creature. And each week they come away without proof of Bigfoot's existence; yet they remain undaunted, ready to go back out again.

It's not an unfamiliar television format, one popularized most recently by other paranormal cable series like Syfy's "Ghost Hunters" franchise and A&E's recently concluded "Paranormal State."

The first season of "Finding Bigfoot" aired during the summer, drawing an average 1.2 million viewers, making it one of Animal Planet's top series. A second season is in the works for early next year, and a two-hour special, "Finding Bigfoot: Birth of a Legend," airs tonight at 9.

In this outing, the team, which includes Seattle's Ranae Holland, traipses through a California redwood forest to visit the site where the Patterson-Gimlin footage of a supposed Bigfoot was filmed 50 years ago.

The "Finding Bigfoot" team is made up of three true believers and one skeptic. Holland, a research field biologist/ecologist with a degree in aquatic ecology from the University of Washington, is the skeptic.

When she's not out searching for Bigfoot, Holland makes her home on Lake Union. For now her place is sublet while she's on the hunt.

"I have not been home very much," she said earlier this month during a break from production in southwest Virginia for a season-two episode. Production wraps in early December.

"Then I get to come home. Some of my friends are chefs, so I'm looking forward to getting some fantastic Seattle food. Then I can recharge my batteries."

A South Dakota native, Holland, 41, worked as a field-biologist contractor before "Finding Bigfoot," often spending time collecting research samples in the wilderness.

Connection with father

Her interest in Bigfoot dates back to watching "In Search of ... " and 1970s-era Bigfoot movies with her father. Although she's a fan of the mystery of Bigfoot, she does not believe the creatures exist.

"I can't wrap my head around that there's a bipedal primate running around the woods of North America. ... There's not enough proof to say I believe," she said.

"But I'm fascinated by the idea of the phenomenon and intrigued by the reports. ... I'm curious by nature and I'm a problem solver. So I say, 'Here's the mystery, let's figure it out one way or another.' "

Holland said her role on "Finding Bigfoot" is to make sure the show's true believers "are not pulling stuff out of nowhere." She wants them to apply scientific methodology to their expeditions.

After Holland's father died in 2003 and she found herself in the woods, she went online to find reports of Bigfoot sightings. That's how she established an email and phone relationship with Matt Moneymaker, founder of the Bigfoot Field Research Organization and one of the stars of "Finding Bigfoot." He gave her access to the group's database of Bigfoot sightings.

"I love to find out Bigfoot stories wherever I'm doing field work," Holland said. But she had no aspirations to appear on TV before "Finding Bigfoot" and initially rejected invitations.

After seeking advice from respected science community colleagues, she gave in.

"They were like, 'Why not?' And I said, 'But if you Google my name, "Bigfoot" will come up.' And they said, 'You know in your heart you're a skeptic, and anyone who knows you knows how you feel and that you love Bigfoot stories,' " she recalled.

"And being on the show has not affected me professionally at all."

Voicing viewers' doubts

"Finding Bigfoot" executive producer Keith Hoffman said Holland's skepticism is a key ingredient in the series.

"She represents the viewer a lot of times," he said. "Viewers want to see people who don't just totally believe."

"Finding Bigfoot" does not take itself too seriously; hence the inclusion of a badly computer-animated Bigfoot in some re-created scenes. And the show's cast has a sense of humor. In tonight's episode, Holland is encouraged to let loose with a Bigfoot call.

"It wasn't so much a call as it was a yodel," she says afterward. "I am a quarter Norwegian, after all."

In the show's first season, one episode was filmed in Washington's North Cascades; the team visited a site on Silver Star Mountain where a photo was taken of what's purportedly a Bigfoot.

There are no plans to return to the state in season two, but Holland is hopeful another Washington episode could be on tap if the series is extended to a third season.

"I hope we'll get back there," she said. "That is a hot spot for [reports of Bigfoot] activity."

In the meantime, Holland said she's having fun tramping woods all over the country with the "Finding Bigfoot" crew. She especially enjoys when the show invites locals to town-hall meetings to discuss their own Bigfoot encounters.

"Doing this Bigfoot show at times makes me feel close to my dad," she said. "Seeing 10-year-olds come to the town halls with their fathers really brings my relationship with my father full circle."

Sasquatch, rare woodpecker among strange Stennis tales

Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011

By MICHAEL NEWSOM - mmnewsom@sunherald.com

Isolated within a sprawling buffer zone protected by highly secure entrances, the John C. Stennis Space Center is an easy target for paranormal stories.

The large site’s mystique has spawned some wild theories about what goes on inside it and its buffer zone -- 212 square miles of mostly wilderness and swamp. Stennis workers get some strange inquiries about what goes on there from those interested in UFOs and other topics, said Marco Giardino, NASA historian at Stennis.

“You get some strange phone calls that all NASA centers get,” Giardino said. “You know, people who wear aluminum-foil helmets or are being looked at by aliens. There are people who think we caused climatic change by landing on the moon. There are people who don’t think we landed on the moon. You get a cross-section of crazies that all NASA centers get.”

But despite the calls, there’s nothing odd going on there, Giardino said.

“We have a very vibrant tourist program,” Giardino said. “People get to come here on tour buses all the time. The mainstream public is pretty well aware of what we do, and none of it is sneaky or nefarious.”

Cajun Sasquatch?

The rocket-testing center is bordered by two large marshlands -- Honey Island Swamp and Devils Swamp. Some interesting tales have come from Honey Island Swamp, Giardino said.

Some believe the “Cajun Sasquatch” roams the Honey Island Swamp, which is on the western side of the Stennis buffer zone near the Louisiana state line. The creature is also known in south Louisiana lore as the “Honey Island Swamp Monster” or in some cases la bête noire, which is French for “the black beast.” The creature has been described as hairy, with fur colors ranging from orangey, black, grey or brown, in various news stories and television interviews dating as far back as the early 1970s. Some descriptions say it’s about 7 feet tall and weighs 400 pounds.

“(La bête noire) is what the Cajuns call their Bigfoot,” Giardino said. “Old Cajuns swear that it jumps on their flatboats and also leaves huge footprints.”

Giardino said Stennis officials don’t get as many calls about the beast as they did years ago.

There are other legends about something called the “loup garou,” which is French for werewolf, living in the nearby swamps of Louisiana

“It is such a massive wilderness that it has been identified as one of the potential places that bigfoot, or ‘la bête noire’ or the other mythical swamp beasts live,” Giardino said. “On its own, it’s really a place full of mystery, and still has bears and alligators and God knows what-all in it.”

Ivory-billed woodpecker?

In addition to menacing, mythical swamp beasts, there have also been reports of the elusive ivory-billed woodpecker living in the woods around Stennis, Giardino said. The scientific community has been at odds over the last several years about whether the large woodpecker, long thought to be extinct, has actually died out. There have been some sightings of the bird near the facility, as well as other areas across the southeastern United States.

In spring 2005, after various alleged witness accounts from across the country surfaced, along with a reported video of one of the birds taken by a University of Arkansas at Little Rock professor, some scientific groups declared the ivory-billed woodpecker wasn’t extinct. Others in the scientific community disputed that claim.

Giardino said there have been reports of the relatively large woodpecker, which has a wingspan of up to 3 feet, living in the buffer zone. It’s often confused, though, with its common, smaller cousin, the pileated woodpecker.

Whether there’s a Sasquatch, or the rarest of birds, living there, the sprawling marsh of Honey Island Swamp can capture the imagination, Giardino said.

“It’s huge,” Giardino said. “As you drive toward Louisiana, there is nothing but trees and waterways. It’s a really beautiful place, but I wouldn’t be there at night, bête noire or not.”

Reality TV goes in search of the skunk ape

By BRENT BATTEN
Posted June 13, 2011 at 4:14 p.m.

David Shealy’s been trekking through the Everglades for 35 years looking for the skunk ape.

This week, he’ll have company.

A film crew from California-based Authentic Entertainment, the production company behind reality TV shows Ace of Cakes (Food Network) and Flipping Out (Bravo) is in Ochopee to begin filming a pilot reality show intended for Discovery Channel in the fall.

Shealy, curator of the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters, has appeared on other shows about the legendary skunk ape, a yeti-like creature adapted to the wilds of South Florida, including "Unsolved Mysteries" and "The Daily Show."

He calls the Discovery Channel pilot the biggest project he’s worked on.

An Authentic Entertainment associate in Burbank confirmed that a film crew is in Florida on the project but the producers in the field declined to comment on the making of the show.

Shealy said they’ll employ a helicopter to get aerial shots and tour the 10,000 Islands by boat. Advanced technology, which he declined to describe, will be used as well, he said.

“The producers really want to put together a successful show,” he said.

Shealy knows not everyone buys the tale of the skunk ape, a 7-foot tall biped covered in hair and emitting a foul odor. The website for his Trail Lakes Campground on U.S. 41 in the Big Cypress Preserve, hosts an ongoing poll asking visitors if they believe in the creature’s existence. More than 25 percent of the 2,500 respondents either believe it to be a hoax or are skeptical.

But a majority either believe in the idea or find it plausible.

He says new information is surfacing all the time. “I’m hot on the trail,” he said, adding the fresh evidence points to the presence of a skunk ape around Sunniland. “New doors are opening. I look forward to bringing this to a close real soon.”

He hopes the Discovery cameras are on hand when he does. “We’re going to break new ground here.”

Saturday just after noon, to mark the occasion of the television production and as a way to thank his camp ground and Skunk Ape Research Headquarters patrons, he is hosting a fan appreciation day at the campground. There will be live music, food, soft drinks, Shealy said. He said he’s promoting a family event so alcohol won’t be sold, but he has a couple of cases of Swamp Ale, a specialty beer made in Florida that he may give out as prizes.

Local radio host Joe Whitehead is to serve as the master of ceremonies.

In the 1990s, Shealy gained notoriety when he tried to sell the county on the idea of using tourist tax revenue to fund an expedition leading the media in search of the skunk ape. The theory was that if the media could show the skunk ape to be real, tourists would flock here hoping to get a glimpse.

The idea actually won initial approval from the Tourist Development Council before being shot down by an unamused board of county commissioners.

In the intervening years, the explosion of reality TV means that an enthusiastic pitchman -- “I consider myself the top researcher in the country, possibly the world, on the skunk ape,” Shealy says -- can on his own get the media to come to the swamp in search of an elusive and possibly illusory creature.

Even if the cameras don’t capture a skunk ape, they’re sure to capture the beauty of the Everglades, all without taxpayers having to spend a dime.

If it ends up on a major cable network, that’s a win for Collier County either way.

Bigfoot Sightings: Spokane River, WA / Green Mountain Falls, CO

Click for video

It's not wreaking havoc like the Mississippi River by any means, or all those little creeks in southeastern Montana that are really screwing people on the Crow reservation, but the Spokane River has officially topped flood stage, and may just have flushed one of nature's most (only?) elusive (fictional?) man-apes into the open.

Yesterday, a YouTube user with the handle Samantha13950 posted a video that shows hikers wending their way down to the river. The video then goes dark and asks, "did you see it?" The video resets and plays again, in slow motion. Yep, sure enough. In the upper right corner — conveniently and beautifully illuminated by a ray of sunlight — a black, hulking man in a gorilla suit real effing sasquatch!!!???!! figure of unknown provenance walks through the frame:

Samantha13950 says on the post that no one noticed Big Foot until after they got home and checked the video (if they taped the entire lumbering hike that must have made for a less than exhilarating editing room sesh).

The Inlander has a team of 80 forensic videographers checking on the authenticity of this. In the meantime, though, can I just make a plea, on behalf of Big Foot, for humanity to step up its game?

The sasquatch have been playing hide and seek with us for millenia, and it's pretty obvious who's winning. I mean, they're always right there, crossing into a clearing — dappled sunlight creating a halo of light that may as well be a flashing "Big Foot here" sign — just as there's a camera rolling. - inlander

UPDATE: Samantha13950 says she isn't interested in "[getting] involved in a news story," but she did tell us where the footage was taken, and with what:

"I will let you know that we were in downriver park where the big hill starts to flatten out down by the river. The video is from my iphone. I was filming my friends slapping at ginormous mosquitoes and trying to get through some thick weeds."

There's no visible slapping of mosquitoes in the video, but it would be reasonable to edit that out when the focus of the video shifted from insects to a giant lumbering figure in the woods. The comment string on the video is already full of cryptid hunters debating the merits of the video, so we'll leave the analysis to them. (The best conversation happens between someone named BFResearchSE and someone named DistendedPerineum, for what that's worth.)

NOTE: another day...another Blobsquatch. What are your thoughts? Lon

Caught On Cam: Bigfoot In Colorado?

Is Bigfoot real? It’s a question that many have asked since the first sightings back in the 1800s when explorers began talking about an ape-like creature that walked like a man. Many scientists have brushed off reports that the creatures exists, and so far no real proof has been presented.

Daniel Masias hopes to be the one to prove Bigfoot’s exists. His fascination began in 1982 when he claimed to have seen two of the creatures near his Green Mountain Falls home one morning.

“In the winter, when there was snow, we noticed there were footprints. The prints didn't have shoes on them; they were just bare feet," he recalled. Masias described the creatures as hairy and less than 6 feet tall, but the footprints they left behind were not human-like. Masias said one creature has a foot span of about 12 inches, the other about 7 inches.

”So, not really big, about average human size," he said.

When asked why no one has seen these creatures or taken pictures with current technology, Masias said he thinks the creatures are coming through a wormhole, an intergalactic travel portal from one galaxy to another.

Masias isn’t the only one to have claimed to have seen Bigfoot. Ken French, a ranger for the Pikes Peak District, remembers seeing a strange creature near Centennial Point, near the summit of the peak. “I saw a dark uniformed color individual walking on the snow, and I stopped my tour bus and ask for binoculars,” recalled French.

He thinks the creature was about 1,000 yards away. "It was big and dark and it had a big gate, so it looked unusual to me.” French remembered that it walked like a person, but he felt it was odd at the time.

"It's not unusual to see people on a snow slope, usually on a ridge line walking, but you do see people up there occasionally, but it's usually a couple of people,” said French.

After the numerous sightings on Pikes Peak, ranger put up a Bigfoot crossing sign to warn visitors of what they could be in store for when they drive up to the 14,110 foot summit.

Masias is convinced he will get a picture of the creature, he thinks is Bigfoot. His motion-sensor camera already has snapped pictures that no one can explain, including one he said is an alien. - krdo - video available

Discovery special reexamines Bigfoot

By Bill Harris ,QMI Agency
First posted: Monday, May 9, 2011 4:06:36 EDT PM

Bigfoot was a big deal back in the day. Kids naturally grow more skeptical about everything with each passing month, but Bigfoot represented the final frontier.

Santa Claus was a nice dream, but merely a dream. Real or imagined, the Easter Bunny was kind of creepy. And there were serious doubts about the specific intentions of the Tooth Fairy, too.

Bigfoot? Now there's something into which an eight-year-old boy can sink his imagination.

One wouldn't think that anyone in 2011 would be fascinated by Bigfoot, what with all those technological distractions turning us into emotionally dead but quick-to-anger freaks.

Thus, the biggest surprise of the new two-hour Canadian-made special Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide - which debuts Sunday, May 15 on Discovery -- is that there are scientists and amateurs out there who remain dedicated to proving or disproving the existence of Bigfoot.

This, of course, is fuelled by the fact that there still are plenty of supposed sightings of Bigfoot, the ape-like creature of legend that lives in dense tree cover or at high altitudes. In 2009, there were 250 unexplained sightings in North America alone, and some claim the number would be far higher if fear of ridicule didn't factor into the human equation.

Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide claims to be the first project to look at Bigfoot from a global perspective, weeding out the obvious frauds and comparing descriptions and legends of supposedly linked creatures such as the North American Sasquatch, the Himalayan Yeti, the Florida Skunk Ape and the Sumatran Orang Pendek.

Five experts from different scientific disciplines go over the material, including that same old famous footage, shot by a man named Roger Patterson in 1967, that has intrigued both Bigfoot fanatics and conspiracy theorists for decades.

It's kind of amusing watching the five experts interact in Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide, because two of them clearly are prone to belief, one is on the fence, and two barely can keep a straight face at times.

Regardless of your thoughts on the possible existence of Bigfoot, the five experts agree on one very interesting point: Even today, in our world of out-of-control urban sprawl, it still is fairly easy for certain species of animals to evade human detection.

And not just little animals, either. Certainly while our day-to-day lives can be very crowded, did you ever ponder that when you're in an airplane flying over virtually any part of North America, the continent still looks pretty empty?

Nonetheless, our mere usage of the term "evade human detection" leads to one of the main discussion points in Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide.

It is suggested that if Bigfoot exists, is it possible we've been getting it wrong as we seek out some sort of ape-like creature, when Bigfoot may in fact be closer to a wild, hairy, near-human?

We know, we know. Many of you are rolling your eyes right now. Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Bigfoot, they're all the same.

But hey, since vampires turned sexy, we have to be afraid of something, right?

'Yeti hand' replica to be returned to Nepal monastery

It is hoped the replicas will boost revenue at Pangboche Monastery
28 April 2011

A pilot from New Zealand is in Nepal to return a replica of what some believe is the hand of a yeti to a remote monastery in the Everest region.

Mike Allsop will fly from Kathmandu to the Everest region on Friday to take the models to Pangboche Monastery, which sits at 4,000m (13,123ft).

The originals were stolen from the monastery in the 1990s.

They first came to light in the 1950s when an expedition to find the mythical yeti came upon the monastery.

Mr Allsop will also take with him a replica of a yeti skull-cap, which was also stolen in the 1990s.

Lingerie box

"I will take these replicas back to the monks so they can replace the ones that were stolen," Mr Allsop told the BBC.

Peter Byrne, the leader of the 1950s expedition to find the abominable snowman, said that while the skull was probably made of goat or antelope skin, the hand did not match the skeleton of a human or a primate.

Mr Byrne managed to take one of the bones from the hand out of Nepal to his friend, the Hollywood actor James Stewart, who was on holiday at the time with his wife in Calcutta.

James Stewart's wife then placed the bone in her lingerie box and smuggled it into England where it was examined by a professor at Oxford University who said he could not conclusively say what kind of bone it was.

In the 1990s, an American television channel ran a documentary about the hand and skull. Shortly after, both were stolen from the monastery.

Mr Allsop said that he decided to make replicas of the hand and skull after trekking in the Everest region.

He approached the head of the New Zealand firm Weta Workshop, who were responsible for crafting the special effects and props for the Lord of the Rings films.

They agreed to make the replicas for free from photographs.

Mr Allsop has not yet told the monks in the monastery that he is returning with replicas of the hand and the skull.

He hopes that they will now be able to attract more trekkers to Pangboche, who will pay a small fee to see the artefacts.

"I want to help the monastery have an income again - I want to help them out," he said.

"My goal is not to convince, my goal is to open minds,"said Jeff Meldrum, professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University. Meldrum has been researching the specimen of Sasquatch for more than 15 years and has received national attention for his work, both positive and negative.

His research examines various evidences which suggest that the mythical creature Sasquatch may in fact be real. In particular, he hypothesizes there may be not only one creature living today, but as many as 500-750 of the Sasquatch species.

"People have been so conditioned that this isn't possible that when they finally see it, it upsets their whole equilibrium," he said.

Meldrum said many people, both inside and outside of academia, don't believe that Sasquatch could be real.

"Some of the naysayers adapt that position because such a creature, such a species could not exist under our noses and not have been discovered," he said.

Others, he said, don't accept the possibility out of stubbornness.

"There's a certain chic to being critical these days," he said, "and skepticism is worn as a bright red arm band by some individuals."

Dr. Robert Schmidt, USU professor of wildlife policy and human dimensions in the College of Natural Resources, invited Meldrum to come and speak.

"I met Dr. Meldrum a number of years ago and it was just interesting about how he, as a person with a credentials in science, how he uses that process to look at Sasquatch, which is a very different way than the other Sasquatch fans," he said. "He has this logical process by which he sorta says ‘I can include this information.'"

Ryan Carlisle, an international studies major who attended the lecture, said the presentation didn't affect his belief in Sasquatch.

"It's a possibility," he said. "I didn't totally discount it. It could be."

Halley Kartchner, a graduate student in human dimensions of ecosystems science and management who considers herself an amateur Bigfoot enthusiast said, "I thought it was really refreshing take on the legend of Sasquatch. My other exposure to it has been kinda crazy people I guess."

She said that while she's not completely convinced that Sasquatch is real, Meldrum's lecture made her more inclined to believe he could be.

"It was really good to hear someone with a Ph.D and all this background knowledge giving his take on it," she said.

Sara Preece, a graduate in marine biology from BYU, said, "I had never seen evidence presented the way he had. I feel like he presented it very factually, very evidence-based. He wasn't trying to change anyone's mind or convince anybody, he was just presenting objective evidence for people."

She said she doesn't necessarily believe or disbelieve that Sasquatch is real because belief connotes a religious type of conviction, but said Meldrum's presentation did make her think that Sasquatch could be real.

Meldrum said he himself is not positive that Sasquatch is real, but that the evidence compels him to continue researching.

Mysterious tall creature reported In Pennsylvania

March 29th, 2011 9:15 pm ET

Paranormal News Examiner

A new Bigfoot case was made available March 29, 2011, after paranormal investigator and author Stan Gordon interviewed a witness from an incident that occurred in Butler County, Pennsylvania, March 18, 2011, between Chicora and East Brady.

Gordon investigated the encounter March 21. Chicora is a rural area about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Gordon is the author of the recently released Silent Invasion: The Pennsylvania UFO-Bigfoot Casebook - the incredible case notes and investigator's behind-the-scenes look at the hundreds of UFO and Bigfoot reports that were reported primarily in southwestern Pennsylvania in 1973 and 1974.

The new case Gordon reports on today is very similar to accounts received throughout the Pennsylvania region over many decades - an unusual creature crossing a roadway and seemingly not interested in the motorist who happens by and watches.

From researcher Stan Gordon - in his own words.
www.stangordon.info

On March 21, 2011, I was contacted by a witness who reported having an encounter with a very strange creature during the early morning hours of March 18, 2011. The incident occurred on a rural road in Butler County between Chicora and East Brady. The witness, a businessman passing through the area, stated that “this was the freakiest thing I ever saw, and it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck.”

The man told me that he was driving down the road when from about a qurter-mile away, he observed something on the right side in a grassy area. His first thought was that it was a deer. The driver stepped on the gas to move closer to get a better view. From about 50 yards away, he observed something that appeared to be hunched down, and then stood up. The driver then observed a very tall muscular creature.

At this point, the driver had his high beams on and watched as the creature walked in front of a yellow reflective road sign, then crossed the two lane road in three long steps and continued into a wooded area. What he saw was a humanoid figure that stood at least 8 feet tall that appeared to have smooth leather-like skin that was of either a darker tan or light brown color.

The creature never looked at the witness, and was only observed from its side. The head appeared to be flat in the front section, and then rounded out. “At the top back of skull, it was like one of those aerodynamic helmets. The top was not quite a point, but looked like a ridge on top of the head.” The face was flat, and the eyes were not clearly defined, but the man thought that they might have been pointed in the corner. The ear that was observed on the left side was long and flat, and came up and back and was pointed backwards like a flap.

The arms were muscular and a little longer than that of a human. The hands looked more like a claw, but the number of fingers was unclear. One physical trait that stood out was the extremely muscular legs. The witness stated that it was hard to explain, but the legs did not move like that of a human, and “looked like they bent backwards.” The witness also saw what appeared to be wings on its back which were tucked into its body, with the wing tips extending toward the side of its head.

No unusual sounds or smells were noticed during the observation which was estimated to have been about 7-8 seconds. As the motorist approached the location where the creature entered the woods, it could no longer be seen. The next day the witness decided to drive back to the location of the encounter to look for any evidence. The ground conditions were not suitable for tracks, and nothing was found. The witness did, however, measure the road sign that the creature had walked in front of. The sign was just over 8 feet high, and the head of the creature was estimated to have reached about 4 inches above the sign.

In North Carolina, Bigfoot Crossed the Road

Published March 24, 2011 | FoxNews.com

Bigfoot caught on tape?

A Shelby, North Carolina man claims to have a video of the legendary Bigfoot.

Thomas Byers was driving with a friend when he says he saw Bigfoot cross Golden Valley Church Road in Rutherford County Tuesday evening. Naturally, he whipped out his video camera and was able to capture a five-second video from about 15 to 20 feet away.

"It ran across the road and into the woods right in front of us and I was able to film it," Byers wrote in an e-mail to WCNC NewsChannel 36 in Charlotte, N.C. "In the short video you can hear it snarl or growl at me."

And Bigfoot, it seems, is in desperate need of a shower. "One thing I know is the smell of it was horrid. It smelled like a cross between road kill and a skunk. And it did not like the fact that I was there on the road with it. In the video you can hear it snarl or growl at me as it crosses the road."

Byers details the event on a personal website where he has posted the video plus a few pictures. In the description, he explains that Bigfoot, or Knobby as it's known locally, has been "spotted for years."

Commenters on his site remained divided over the authenticity of the video.

"Unfortunately, until one is captured or killed and delivered to a lab, nothing can be proven," said online user 'Mike'. "Any sighting could be staged, or a prank by someone in a primate-like costume."

"I personally believe you," said 'Luke'. "But if you want to convince the skeptics out there you need a better video and physical evidence such as droppings."

As the debate rages on over whether or not this was the real deal, Byers is satisfied simply to have experienced the moment. "It was truly one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen," he said on his website.

Representatives of the American Bigfoot Society and the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Official yeti probe planned after recent sightings

23 March 2011

Government officials in Siberia are planning to set up a special research institute dedicated to the study of yetis following a number of recent mysterious sightings of the folkloric creature.

Hominology experts, who are lined up to lead the studies at Kemerovo University, are eager to prove their existence after people in remote parts of the region claim to have caught a glimpse of the elusive being.

According to 15 witness statements by Siberian locals in the Kemerovo region, 7-ft tall, hairy, manlike creatures have been spotted wandering the Mount Shoria wilderness, with one man even claiming to have saved a yeti from drowning in a river while hunting.

Villager, Afanasy Kiskorov in Tashtagol reportedly witnessed the yeti activity first-hand. He said: "Their bodies were covered in red-and-black fur and they could climb trees. The creature was screaming in fear after falling into a swollen mountain river."

Despite the alleged sightings, no photographic evidence as yet confirms the existence of the 'abominable snowmen.'

However, hair specimens, large footprints and huge branch shelters in forests have fuelled scientific belief to traces of the yetis, described as the 'Neanderthal ancestors of man.'

Officials of the Kemerovo administration in western Siberia have said that organising an institute or a scientific centre would be a logical continuation of research into the yeti.

Dr. Igor Burtsev, director of the International Center of Hominology, will join the brand new research unit if the plans go ahead. He said: "In Russia there are about 30 authoritative scientists who are engaged in studying the phenomenon of the abonimable snowman."

"All of them will be integrated into this institute. The primary goal is to establish contact with one of the creatures."

Dr. Burtsev told Russian newspaper Itar Press after a yeti expedition last year: "I saw markers (half-broken branches) the creature uses to mark the controlled territory. In the woods I have found several artifacts to confirm my theory. I plan to find the Bigfoot's shelter and even try to contact the creature."

Speaking on 'Friday Night with Jonathan Ross' in 2009, British wildlife expert David Attenborough said he believed that there was very convincing evidence that yetis do exist.

The Administration of Kemerovo, the regional government, will announce its final decision on whether they will implement the research institute after it hosts an international conference on yetis later this year.

Siberia plans 'institute to study yetis'

March 23, 2011

Officials in a Siberian region on Wednesday announced plans to open a scientific institute for researchers to study yetis, despite opposition from academics.

"Organising an institute or a scientific centre would be a logical continuation of research into the yeti," the administration of the Russian coal-mining region of Kemerovo in western Siberia said.

The region will announce its final decision after hosting an international conference on yetis later this year, the statement said, citing the regional government's education and science department.

"The town of Tashtagol will host an international conference with leading experts into hominids. Based on its results, we will take a decision on opening a scientific research institute to study the yeti."

Yetis, or Abominable Snowmen, are hairy ape-like creatures of popular myth, that are generally held to inhabit the Himalayas.

But some believe Russia also holds a population of yetis, which it calls Snow Men, in remote areas of Siberia such as the mountains in the southern part of Kemerovo around Tashtagol.

Kemerovo officials cited yeti researcher Igor Burtsev as saying that around 30 Russian scientists are studying yetis and could work together at the planned institute.

"We think that the yeti is a separate branch of human evolution. It lives in harmony with nature," Burtsev was quoted as saying.

Burtsev earlier told the ITAR-TASS news agency that the institute was planned to open as part of the region's state university.

The university swiftly denied the claim in a statement, saying that "studying yetis is not among the research interests of the scientific teams at Kemerovo State University". The Kemerovo region has used its reputation for sightings of yetis to promote tourism. It holds an annual Yeti Day and this year it will run an ice sculpture competition called "In the World of the Yeti".

Bigfoot Hoaxers Not Even Trying Anymore

Mar 24, 2011

Adrian Chen — Bigfoot Hoaxers Not Even Trying Anymore Hey look! It's Bigfoot! No it's not. It's obviously some dude in a gorilla suit. But, nice try, Thomas Bryers of North Carolina.

According to YouTube caption, Bryers saw the bigfoot on March 22nd: "It came from out of the field from the direction of the creek and we later took photos of feet prints in a freshly plowed field. I jumped from the truck and took this video of it as it crossed the road in front of us." And for some reason the camera was completely out of focus and only had enough batteries for five seconds of filming.

Time was, you used to get a nice, long shot of fake Bigfoot. Now it's a measly five seconds? We can't take a minute out of our day, even for monsters. [Daily Mail via The Awl]

Bigfoot demands free speech

March 9, 2011 by Sean McTiernan

An American amateur filmmaker who was barred from a state park while impersonating Bigfoot says his rights have been violated.

In 2009 Jonathan Doyle dressed up as the crypto-zoological legend and then jogged around New Hampshire’s Mount Monadnock.

Afterwards he abandoned his disguise and interviewed hikers about what they’d seen.

Doyle said there’d been no complaints made to the state park service after his first bigfoot excursion: “People loved it. It was socially engaging,”

But when Doyle decided to return to the mountain on 19 September last year, Monadnock park manager Patrick Hummel brought it to the attention of his supervisor in an e-mail entitled “Bigfoot problem on Monadnock… not kidding”.

Hummel then ambushed Doyle during his next outing, telling him he was barred from filming in the park until he obtained a permit.

Amateur sasquatch Doyle’s response lawsuit is backed by the American Civil Liberties Union. He claims the state’s requirement that he pay for a permit and obtain a $2 million insurance bond before filming violates his right to free speech.

“The underlying activities are humorous, but the principle’s important,” an ACLU lawyer told the Associated Press.

“We’re talking about a very small-scale activity in a very large place. We don’t believe there’s any legitimate government role in regulation.”

Kangaroos, wallabies, black panthers and even Bigfoot - could mystery of Cannock Chase stretch back to 1800s?

Mar 10 2011 by Charlotte Lilley

For decades, there have been reports of big cats in the Cannock Chase area.

There have also been sightings of kangaroos, wallabies and even Bigfoot. Strange noises in the night, including piercing howls, and mysterious paw prints in the snow have only created further speculation that something is lurking in this little corner of Staffordshire.

However, one must question where these animals originated from.

During the late 1800s, a resident doctor, renowned zoologist and recognised expert on big cats, lived in Cannock and housed a whole host of animals in his own back garden that stood on the grounds of Cannock’s police station. Dr John Butter was well known for his ‘lair of beasts’ which included giant snakes, elephants, emus, ostriches, a wild ocelot and even a life-sized giraffe which, some neighbours said, regularly peered at them over the garden fence. An obscure character, Butter established a wide reputation. He often made house calls to his patients whilst being carted around the town by a zebra. For those who made it to his surgery, they were greeted in the waiting room by his pet monkey, Antony.

But what became of these animals? Are these the ancestors of the strange beasts spotted on Cannock Chase?

The Boer War showed just how respected Butter was, as the whole town gathered to bid him farewell when he went to do battle. However, it is a well-known fact that during this time, some of his creatures simply disappeared from his home. Were they stolen or did they escape?

At the outbreak of the First World War, further animals appear to have vanished as food supplies became rationed. No records can be found of them being donated to local zoos, to a travelling circus or even being put to sleep. Could it be that the doctor himself released his beloved animals into the wild during the night when nobody was watching? And what became of Antony the monkey? No-one knows.

Perhaps what residents have been witnessing are descendants of the animals that Dr Butter cared for. However, it is also possible the animals found new homes and no documentation of the transactions were ever recorded.

Whatever happened to Butter’s magnificent menagerie, we will never know. The doctor died in April 1920 having suffered from a mystery illness for ten days. Whether he released his creatures into the wild or not, remains a mystery. He took his secrets to the grave.

One thing is for sure - almost 100 years ago, exceptional animals were kept not too far from Cannock Chase, a place where there have been countless reports and sightings of animals and strange creatures not at all native to Britain.

Bigfoot search planned in N.C.

Bigfoot is said to be a large, fur-covered creature that
lives in forests and avoids human contact.
By TIM CLODFELTER
Published: February 25, 2011

Rick Lunsford, a Wilkes County resident who says he saw Bigfoot more than 30 years ago, is planning an expedition to look for proof of the elusive creature.

"I'm really looking for evidence, and looking for people to go with me," Lunsford said Thursday.

Bigfoot is said to be a large, fur-covered creature that lives in forests and avoids human contact. Bigfoot sightings have been reported in every U.S. state except Hawaii, according to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, a national group that investigates such reports. The evidence to date has consisted largely of witness reports, plaster casts of footprints, and fuzzy images.

Lunsford plans a March 5 expedition to search for evidence in the Roten Creek Road area in Wilbar. That is where he says he saw the creature back in late August or September 1978, when he was 20 years old.

Lunsford, now 52, came forward with his story last year.

He described Bigfoot as being somewhere between 6 and 8 feet tall and as broad as a refrigerator. Its arms were bowed out. It had dark hair, 3 or 4 inches long, on its arms. It gave off a terrible odor, he said.

But what he remembers most vividly, he said, were the creature's dark, round eyes and oval head.

Lunsford filed a report last year with the BFRO about his encounter. Counting Lunsford, the organization's website lists 64 Bigfoot sightings in North Carolina, most of them near the Tennessee border.

"People have lived up here all their lives and never knew it existed up here," Lunsford said. "I've heard some more stories since I came out with mine.

"I'm wanting to prove it so bad, I can see it."

He has already heard from about 50 people interested in joining the expedition, he said, and hopes to find more. He doesn't want anyone to bring guns or dogs, saying, "I don't want nobody getting hurt or nothing."

His expedition will gather at noon March 5 at the Food Lion parking lot on NC Highway 16 in Millers Creek, then travel about 12 to 13 miles up the mountain.
