Residents of Australia's tropical north know that you don't go swimming in the sea at night because that's when crocodiles are most dangerous.

But French fisherman Yoann Galeran didn't know the rules and happily dived into the waters off Arnhem Land - which is why he ended up with his head firmly between the jaws of a saltwater croc.

It dragged him underwater, with his head locked between its teeth and attempted a death roll in which victims are spun around until they drown.

At the age of 29, however, Mr Galeran wasn't ready to die just yet and in dark and dangerous waters so far from home.

'I didn't think about dying - I thought only about fighting to stay alive,' he said back on his boat today after his ordeal.

Crocodile attacks kill two Indonesians

TWO deadly crocodile attacks have taken two Indonesian men in the same river in less than two months.
The head of the local conservation agency says a saltwater crocodile reportedly swallowed a 20-year-old villager who was bathing yesterday on a river on Sumatra island.
Suprianto said the 35-year-old man killed last month was dragged away and his partial corpse was found four days later about 2.5 kilometres from where he was attacked.
Both attacks were in Tulang Bawang district in Lampung province. Suprianto said today his office didn't yet have more details on yesterday's attack.
No crocodile has been captured and it wasn't known if the same animal killed both men.

Shock as man’s manhood is eaten by crocodile

An elderly Gutu man had his testicles and part of his manhood torn into shreds and mauled by a crocodile in the Chivake River.

Jonah Maturure, 70, who is from Marutaya village, Chief Mataruse in Gutu was Friday still recovering in a Bulawayo hospital after sustaining a fractured hand and a badly mauled back.

Jonah Maturure who engaged in a fierce battle for life with the crocodile had a box of tomatoes that he was carrying to thank after he dropped it into the water and in the process turned the attention of the large reptile away from him.

In an interview with the Sunday News in his hospital bed at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) last Wednesday, Mr Maturure, who could not hide his pain said the attack was so vicious that it could have ended his life had it not been for the box of tomatoes that he decided to drop in the water.

He said he nearly met his death last month when he decided to take his tomatoes for sale across Chivake River whose water level was swelling owing to the rains that had pounded the area the previous night.
