Why animals fight members of other species

Biologists have long wondered why some animals ignore other species and others aggressively combat interlopers from another species.

A new study from UCLA researchers has revealed that rubyspot damselfly males fight off males from other damselfly species because of competition for mating females – even though female rubyspot damselflies are not interested in inter-species mating.

“We were surprised to see how well the degree of reproductive interference — the competition for mates between species — predicts the degree of aggression between species,” said study author Jonathan Drury, currently a postdoctoral researcher at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.

In the study, researchers daily tracked more than 100 damselflies along rivers and streams in Texas, Arizona and Mexico. They found a substantial link between inter-species violence and similar coloration patterns. The biologists recorded some instances where aggression between species disappeared due to substantial divergence in wing coloration. However, in most of the pairs of species they studied, there is very little alteration in color, and males are as hostile to males of a different species as to males of their own species.

“Male damselflies often have difficulty distinguishing between females of their own species and another species when making split-second decisions about whether to pursue a female,” said study author Gregory Grether, a UCLA professor of ecology. “I think that’s the root cause of the persistence of male territorial aggression.”

After their observations, the team designed and confirmed a mathematical simulation projecting that as competition for mates rises, male aggression rises, and displaying at what point hostility against a different species becomes beneficial.

“Low levels of reproductive interference are associated with low levels of aggression, and high levels of reproductive interference are associated with high levels of aggression,” Grether said.

Dopamine turns worker ants into warrior queens

(Phys.org) —The ritualized fighting behavior of one ant species is linked to increases in dopamine levels that trigger dramatic physical changes in the ants without affecting their DNA, according to research from North Carolina State University, Arizona State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The researchers studied Indian jumping ants (Harpegnathos saltator), which can undergo significant changes in physiology without any related changes to their DNA. Instead, the changes depend on which genes are turned on or off – which in turn is determined by social and environmental factors. This has made them a model organism for epigenetics researchers.

Village scraps popular dog show after competitors started fighting and 'football hooligans turned up for showdown with rivals'

  • Fighting broke out and football fans turned up looking for rival supporters 
  • Rubbish and verbal abuse was also thrown at show organisers

A village dog show has been scrapped after fighting broke out between competitors who acted like 'football hooligans'.

The annual dog-grooming competition began as an event for families in sleepy Higham, in Kent, five years ago and has grown in popularity.

Organisers expecting a record 700 dogs for this year's event found themselves overwhelmed by a crowd of nearly 2,000.

The huge numbers put pressure on facilities at the village's Memorial Hall playing fields and trouble erupted when visitors struggled to find room to park.

One motorist got so angry at queueing traffic he allegedly punched an 18-year-old volunteer. A cyclist is also said to have hit the volunteer because traffic was blocking up the street.

The bad feeling spilled over to dog owners who apparently turned on event organisers complaining their pets had not won a rosette and demanded compensation.

Two women rivals allegedly started fighing and rubbish and verbal abuse was thrown at show organisers.

It was also claimed football fans turned up without dogs looking for a showdown with rival supporters.

Police were called to resolve the parking disputes and angry pet owners were sent home without compensation.

Fish Win Fights On Strength of Personality

Apr. 26, 2013 — When predicting the outcome of a fight, the big guy doesn't always win suggests new research on fish. Scientists at the University of Exeter and Texas A&M University found that when fish fight over food, it is personality, rather than size, that determines whether they will be victorious. The findings suggest that when resources are in short supply personality traits such as aggression could be more important than strength when it comes to survival. 

The study, published in the journalBehavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, found that small fish were able to do well in contests for food against larger fish provided they were aggressive. Regardless of their initial size, it was the fish that tended to have consistently aggressive behaviour -- or personalities -- that repeatedly won food and as a result put on weight. 

Dr Alastair Wilson from Biosciences at the University of Exeter said: "We wondered if we were witnessing a form of Napoleon, or small man, syndrome. Certainly our study indicates that small fish with an aggressive personality are capable of defeating their larger, more passive counterparts when it comes to fights over food. The research suggests that personality can have far reaching implications for life and survival." 

The sheepshead swordtail fish (Xiphophorus birchmanni) fish were placed in pairs in a fish tank, food was added and their behaviour was captured on film. The feeding contest trials were carried out with both male and female fish. The researchers found that while males regularly attacked their opponent to win the food, females were much less aggressive and rarely attacked. 

In animals, personality is considered to be behaviour that is repeatedly observed under certain conditions. Major aspects of personality such as shyness or aggressiveness have previously been characterised and are thought to have important ecological significance. There is also evidence to suggest that certain aspects of personality can be inherited. Further work on whether winning food through aggression could ultimately improve reproductive success will shed light on the heritability of personality traits.
