One in five
children has never seen a wild bee and a similar number of parents admit they
find the insect an inconvenience, research shows.
The study, by
Disney’s The Hive and the charity Adopt-a-Hive, hopes to raise awareness of the
plight of wild bees.
‘I am shocked
by the number of children who have never seen a wild bee,’ said Adopt-a-Hive
founder Tony Gray.
Bee numbers
have been falling for decades, with the decline attributed to disease, weather,
parasites and pesticides.
It’s not just
kids in the dark either, with the poll of 2,000 parents showing around half of
respondents did not know bees helped to pollinate crops, while around 20 per
cent said summer would be better if there were no bees around.
