A turtle mystery in Jamaica Bay, NYC (Diamondback Terrapins) – via Herp Digest

Something strange is happening to the diamondback terrapin turtles of Jamaica Bay, though there’s some question as to precisely what that strange thing means.

“Nobody has ever seen anything like this before,” said Russell Burke, a Hofstra University ecology professor and one of the foremost experts on Jamaica Bay’s population of diamondback terrapin turtles, the largest concentration in the state. “It’s a puzzle.”

Every summer, female representatives of North America’s only species of brackish- water turtle lumber nervously onto the shores of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

Using their hind legs, they dig a hole in the sand, deposit their “clutches” of eggs, cover them up again, and return to the bay’s polluted waters.

While the population of female turtles nesting in Jamaica Bay has remained constant over the past decade or so, that population’s egg-laying capacity appears to have fallen off dramatically.

“The number of nests that they’re laying has dropped by 50 percent in the last 10 years,” Burke said.

Female terrapins store sperm for as many as seven years and can lay three clutches during their two-month summer nesting season.

But among the more than 1,200 female turtles that Burke has been following for years, those that used to lay three nests are now laying two, and those who use to lay two are now laying one, and those who laid one are now skipping summers entirely.

“It’s like if you had a big population of a thousand humans and normally they would reproduce with some frequency and the frequency has dropped by half,” he said.

At the same time, two other phenomena are complicating the picture: the size of the clutches and the size of the eggs inside those clutches, has each gone up by about 10 percent.

“The drop in total number of clutches by 50 percent just swamps all that,” Burke said. “They’re clearly putting way less energy into reproduction than they used to.”

This means that absent any countervailing change, the population of terrapin turtles in Jamaica Bay, a population that has rebounded dramatically since the days when turtle soup was all the rage, stands to drop over time as the long-lived reptiles die and fewer young ones rise up to replace them.

It also means that the 31-square-mile bay may not be as healthy as thought, despite the government’s substantial efforts to clean and stabilize it. 

“It’s certainly an indicator that something is dramatically wrong with the health of the bay,” said Burke.

Diamondback terrapins eat clams, snails and other invertebrates that live in marshes.

Jamaica Bay is now surrounded by a largely concrete watershed (the Rockaways, J.F.K. Airport, Shore Parkway), but it used to be a natural wonder.

Before European settlement, it had more than 10,000 acres of wetlands. In 1971, it had 4,000.

“At one point we were losing up to 40 acres a year,” said Daniel Mundy, vice president of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers.  

Mundy said recent, concerted efforts by the federal, city and state governments to restore the bay have begun to “stem the tide.”

Nevertheless, the city says there are just 1,000 acres of marshland remaining.

There are several working hypotheses as to why: the water quality remains poor and nitrogen rich. The nitrogen promotes algae growth and algae smothers marsh plants. Sea level rise destabilizes marshes.

And the streams that used to carry sediment into the bay have all been paved over.

“All the fresh water coming into the bay is really from sewage treatment plant outfalls,” said Robert Pirani, NY-NJ Harbor and Estuary Program director at the Hudson River Foundation. “There’s not a lot of sediment there.”
So instead of clams and molluscs, the turtles are eating algae.

Burke knows because after he watches the turtles lay eggs, he and his students collect them, soak them in warm water, analyze their excretions and then return them to the bay.

“Sometimes their guts are just filled with algae, that’s what they’re eating,” he said. “At the same time the marshes are degrading really badly and have been for some time. So, my best guess is that our terrapins are eating what they can, because they can’t find what they normally eat. And it’s a really low-protein diet, a really low-quality diet, they probably can’t digest it very well, and that’s translating into reproductive problems.”

And that, in turn, might translate into a disaster for the Jamaica Bay terrapin.

“If you don’t produce eggs to bring young into the population, then there’s only one way for your population to go,” said Burke. “Unless something turns around pretty dramatically, they’re definitely on their way out.”

Pilot Program Aims to Save Jamaica Bay’s Shrinking Marshes - Herp Digest

At first glance, the five rectilinear islands that bob off the south shore of Jamaica Bay look like an art installation cooked up in a studio in Williamsburg or Bushwick.
But the structures, which resemble giant planters and are filled with smooth cordgrass, have an ecological purpose. They are helping to protect a quarter-mile ribbon of marshland that hugs the shore in the Rockaways by slowing the onslaught of waves, which are small but relentless.
“Think of it as death by a thousand pin pricks,” said John K. McLaughlin, the director of the Office of Ecological Services for New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection. “It’s the everyday waves that are constantly hitting the marsh.”
The floating wetlands are officially called wave attenuators, and they are merely the latest in a series of projects undertaken by the city, state and federal governments to restore the bay to its pristine, fertile former self.
In August, the city installed the five islands, which are anchored to the bay’s bottom via industrial-strength rubber bands that can stretch with the tides. Environmental officials say the $500,000 pilot project will give them information about whether the attenuators can slow the erosion of the marsh’s edge.
Mr. McLaughlin said that in the 1800s, Jamaica Bay looked nothing like the watery expanse of today. Instead, visitors saw mostly a sea of green marshland — 16,000 acres in all — interlaced with shallow creeks. But over the decades, the marshes along the shore were filled in to make room for highways, housing and Kennedy International Airport. Marshy areas in the center were dug out to accommodate shipping channels. Wave action, pollution and sea-level rise have accelerated the decline. Today, there are just 800 to 1,000 acres of marsh left.
Acre for acre, marshes are among the most productive ecosystems on the planet. They filter nitrogen and phosphorus from the water; provide fish habitat; store carbon; and protect against storm surges. City officials are eager, therefore, to protect the marshes that remain.
The five islands are actually stand-ins for beds of oysters, a keystone species that the city is also trying to restore to Jamaica Bay. A single adult oyster can filter 25 gallons of water a day. Before the overharvesting of oysters from the bay and the dumping of raw sewage there, oysters carpeted the bay’s bottom. Based on analyses of Chesapeake Bay’s past oyster population, it is believed that oysters in Jamaica Bay once filtered the entire basin every three to five days.
Two oyster beds that were installed in recent years lasted only as long as the individual bivalves lived, five to six years. City officials were disappointed that there were no new recruits, meaning new larvae to colonize the bed. That would have made the beds self-sustaining. The problem, they now believe, was that the beds were not large enough. “The water quality was fine,” Mr. McLaughlin said.
The Environmental Protection Department is now preparing a much larger project — the installation of a half-acre oyster bed — that will be placed underwater at the head of the bay next spring. Water clarity in the bay has improved markedly in recent years, the result of upgrades to the four wastewater treatment plants there. The hope is that while the oyster bed further cleanses the bay, it will also protect the marshes.
“Oyster beds are subtidal,” Mr. McLaughlin said. “So you have a hump at the bottom, and as the wave comes in, it hits that hump and slows down.”
Before the wave attenuators were installed in mid-August, 100 feet off Brant Point in the Arverne section of Queens, the Environmental Protection Department made baseline measurements of the wave activity there using remote acoustic monitoring devices. Computer models show that floating wetlands can decrease wave energy by 52 percent.
Mr. McLaughlin said that even small waves had carved out a section, similar to the shape of a wave, of the marshland.
The attenuators, measuring 40 feet by 8 feet, are made from recycled plastic and planted with spartina alterniflora, commonly called smooth cordgrass, which can tolerate being inundated by salt water twice a day. At the end of two years, city officials will also measure the line of marsh along the shore, to see if it has receded at a slower pace — or not at all — compared with nearby marshland that was not protected by the attenuators.
Don Riepe, the Jamaica Bay guardian for the American Littoral Society, which focuses on coastal preservation, was wary in his appraisal of the floating wetlands. “I’m not crazy about artificial structures in the bay,” he said. “More marshland is better. Marshes are the real attenuators. But these are small and they may do some good.”
For the past decade, city, state and federal environmental agencies have also worked to restore some of the dozen marsh islands that dot the bay. The Environmental Protection Department alone has invested $20 million so far in the restoration of islands like Big Egg, Rulers Bar and Black Wall. Those islands have shrunk over the decades by 45 percent to 90 percent, while others have disappeared altogether.
The result is a much wider fetch, or stretch of water, across which wind can gather speed, thus creating bigger waves. That leads to more marsh erosion.
If successful, the wave attenuators could bolster the city’s resolve to return the oyster to Jamaica Bay. Either way, city officials say, the project will make a contribution. “Even failure gives you a lot of information,” Mr. McLaughlin said.

Bird’s eye view of Sandy’s fury

Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on Rockaway and Broad Channel as well as the fragile eco systems that surround them.

As residents struggle to rebuild their homes, environmentalists are trying to determine the best way to repair damage to Jamaica Bay, Jacob Riis Park and other Queens sections of the Gateway National Recreation Area.

The West Pond of Jamaica Bay, a man-made freshwater pool of water, was breached. Salt water now pours into the pond, endangering the habitat for wildlife.

Sand blanketed acres of Riis Park, while waves knocked down part of a brick wall behind its historic art deco bathhouse.

“It was shocking,” said Dave Taft, coordinator of the Jamaica Bay Unit for the National Park Service. “This is an important scenic place for New Yorkers and it’s a place where naturalists cut their teeth.”

The storm created a channel from Jamaica Bay into the freshwater pond, created more than 50 years ago. It is a popular spot for bird watchers.

Taft said the agency is mulling ways to restore a portion of the pond as freshwater so it doesn’t lose the population of snapping turtles, muskrats and migrating birds that have grown to call it home.

“This is a wrenching question for the Park Service,” said Dan Hendrick, who is working on a documentary about Jamaica Bay. “Does it make sense to rebuild some of the man-made structures that didn’t hold up? Water quality is also an issue. It had been improving.”
