Named after Stanley Kubrick, a new species of frog is a 'clockwork orange' of nature – via Herp Digest

Summary: Two new frog species were discovered in the Amazon Basin. Both had been previously misidentified as another superficially identical species. Having conducted analyses of genetic, morphologic, and bioacoustic data, scientists C. Daniel Rivadeneira, Dr. Pablo J. Venegas, and Dr. Santiago R. Ron concluded that the amphibians represented two previously unknown species that used to go by the name of the Sarayacu treefrog (Dendropsophus parviceps).

As a result of this research collaboration between Ecuador's Catholic University (PUCE) and Peru's Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad (CORBIDI), the treefrogs were recently described as new to science in the open access journal ZooKeys.

The scientists remind that, back in 1972, when Anthony Burgess explained the title of his famous novel A Clockwork Orange, he said: "I've implied the junction of the organic, the lively, the sweet -- in other words, life, the orange -- and the mechanical, the cold, the disciplined (…)"

"Without knowing, he was also giving a good metaphor to describe ecosystems," comment the researchers. "Nature works as the interplay between life and its cold, mechanical, and disciplined physical matrix."
Furthermore, both new frogs, scientifically listed as D. kubricki and D. kamagarini, are characterized by having a bright orange blotch on the shanks, reminiscent of the 'orange pieces of nature’.

On the other hand, the species name kamagarini refers to 'demon' or 'devil', as per its translation from the Matsigenka language spoken in southeastern Peru. One of the characteristic features of the new species D. kamagarini are namely its horn-like protuberances on the upper eyelids.
Amphibians are important pieces in ecosystems as secondary consumers in food chains. They also play a significant role in decomposition and nutrient cycling.

Stanley Kubrick -- arguably one of the most brilliant and influential film directors of all time -- left an immemorial legacy in cinema. His masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange (1971), was based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of the same name.

Bite force research reveals dinosaur-eating frog

Scientists say that a large, now extinct, frog called Beelzebufo that lived about 68 million years ago in Madagascar would have been capable of eating small dinosaurs.
The conclusion comes from a study of the bite force of South American horned frogs from the living genus Ceratophrys, known as Pacman frogs for their characteristic round shape and large mouth, similar to the video game character Pac-Man. Due to their attractive body colouring, voracious appetite, and comically huge heads, horned frogs are very popular in the international pet trade.
Published today in the Nature journal Scientific Reports, the scientists from University of Adelaide, California State Polytechnic University – Pomona, University of California – Riverside and UCL, University College London found that living large South American horned frogs have similar bite forces to those of mammalian predators.
"Unlike the vast majority of frogs which have weak jaws and typically consume small prey, horned frogs ambush animals as large as themselves – including other frogs, snakes, and rodents. And their powerful jaws play a critical role in grabbing and subduing the prey," says Dr Marc Jones, researcher at the University of Adelaide's School of Biological Sciences and honorary researcher at the South Australian Museum.

'Sleeping Beauty' Frog with Bright Red Groin Discovered

On the foothills of the Andes in central Peru, a brilliantly colored frog lives out a fractured fairy tale.

Once upon a time—specifically, one evening in November 2014—biologist Germán Chávez heard a call echo through the highest-altitude forests ofTingo María National Park. Chávez didn’t recognize the call, so he went out to find the source of the distinctive chirps. Up in a tree, he found a little brown frog less than an inch (2.5 centimeters) long—and quickly realized that like the frogs in stories, this one was more than meets the eye.

“We could see the bright red legs, and that was a surprise,” says Chávez, a biologist with Peru’s Center of Ornithology and Biodiversity. “We have never seen a frog like that.”

Frogs come in a dazzling variety of colors, and depending on the genus, so do their crotches: Related frogs have splotches of yellow, brown, and even orange on their groins, thighs, and shanks. But to see such bright pigmentation—and red, at that—caught the researchers off-guard. (See “New Amazon Frog Named After Mythical Monster.”)

Dark and marked: Strikingly colored new fleshbelly frog from the Andean cloud forest

Summary:  Carrying itself with a dark mask on its face and a broad shapeless white mark on its chest, a frog had been jumping across the Peruvian cloud forests of the Andes unrecognized by the scientific world. Now, this visibly distinguishable species has been picked up by researchers from its likely only locality, a cloud forest near Cusco in Peru, at 2,350 m elevation.

New Jelly Bean-Size 'Masked' Frog Discovered in the Andes

A tiny new frog species discovered in the Peruvian Andes has a white-mottled belly and a dark face mask that makes it look like a bandit.

Noblella madreselva lives in the humid cloud forest near Cusco, Peru, probably only in the valleys right around where it was discovered, researchers report today (Aug. 6) in the journal ZooKeys. The frogs, which are not much bigger than jelly beans, can fit on the tip of a human finger. They're active during the day, and live in leaf litter on the forest floor.

Vanessa Uscapi, a biologist at the National University of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Cusco, Peru, discovered the new tiny frog in January 2011, but only now has it been officially described. She and her colleagues picked the name madreselva to honor conservation initiatives in the region: The word means "mother jungle" and is also the name of a nearby ecotourism lodge and a small valley where a group called Sircadia is trying to launch a sustainable eco-community.

Newfound Frog Has Strange Breeding Habits

A new species of frog has hopped onto the radar of researchers in Bangladesh. The frogs were discovered after the researchers noticed their unusual breeding habits, according to a new study.

Most frogs have a specific mating season, but researchers found that one frog bred all year long, even in the winter, said study lead researcher M. Sajid Ali Howlader, a doctoral student of biosciences at the University of Helsinki in Finland.

Howlader learned that the frog was named Euphlyctis cyanophlycti, and it was discovered by the German naturalist J. G. Schneider in 1799. But, a detailed study of the frog's genetics, shape and size showed that it was actually an entirely different species from E. cyanophlycti.

No croaking: New frog species groans, coughs

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (AP) — Scientists have discovered a new frog species in southern New Jersey that makes some un-froglike sounds.

The Atlantic Coast leopard frog groans and makes coughing noises rather than croaking sounds. The unfamiliar call attracted the notice of wildlife experts several years ago in Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Morris County.

They photographed the frog and concluded it wasn't the northern leopard frog or southern leopard frog.

Man finds live frog in fish's throat

An Australian angler opened the mouth of the fish he had just caught - and saw a live frog staring back at him.

Angus James was fishing in North Queensland when he caught the jungle perch, reports Reptiles magazine.

"As I was pulling my lure from the fish to release back into the water I noticed two little eyes looking back at me from inside the fish's mouth," he said.

"After capturing this picture, the little green tree frog leaped straight past my head onto the nearest tree.

"It was one of the coolest things I have seen in my life! This is one lucky frog!"

His photograph was submitted to Reptiles, which posted the image on its Facebook page attracting thousands of likes and comments.

New frog species found in troubled Indian habitat

Scientists have discovered 14 new species of so-called dancing frogs in the jungle mountains of southern India—just in time, they fear, to watch them fade away.

Indian biologists say they found the tiny acrobatic amphibians, which earned their name with the unusual kicks they use to attract mates, declining dramatically in number during the 12 years in which they chronicled the species through morphological descriptions and molecular DNA markers. They breed after the yearly monsoon in fast-rushing streams, but their habitat appears to be becoming increasingly dry.

"It's like a Hollywood movie, both joyful and sad. On the one hand, we have brought these beautiful frogs into public knowledge. But about 80 percent are outside protected areas, and in some places, it was as if nature itself was crying," said the project's lead scientist, University of Delhi professor Sathyabhama Das Biju.

Extinct Costa Rican frog rediscovered

Extinct frog makes a comeback

November 2013: According to a paper published in Amphibia-Reptilia, a critically endangered harlequin toad believed to be extinct has been found breeding in a tract of highland forest in Costa Rica. Atelopus varius, known as the ‘Halloween frog’ because of its striking orange and black markings, was once quite common from central Costa Rica to western Panama. However, the population began to collapse from the 1980s onwards – probably caused by the spread of the deadly chytrid fungus that has killed off many amphibians around the world.

Considered extinct by 1996, there was a brief flicker of hope for the Halloween frog in 2004, when a population was discovered in south western Costa Rica. However, subsequent studies failed to find any more. This time around, researchers have uncovered a significant population on a private reserve within the wider La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, located near the border with Panama. The authors of the paper, led by Jose F. Gonzalez-Maya of the Sierra to Sea Institute & ProCAT International in Mexico and the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, believe the find offers fresh hope for other species presumed to be extinct in Costa Rica.

New species of gecko, skink and frog discovered in Australia

Discoveries in remote Cape York Peninsula
October 2013. A James Cook University-National Geographic expedition to Cape York Peninsula in north-east Australia has found three vertebrate species new to science. The species appear to have been isolated for millions of years and include a bizarre looking leaf-tail gecko, a golden-coloured skink and a boulder-dwelling frog.

Dr Conrad Hoskin from James Cook University and National Geographic photographer/Harvard University researcher Dr Tim Laman teamed up for an expedition to explore a remote mountain range on Cape York Peninsula in north-east Australia. The rugged mountain range of Cape Melville is an amazing place-millions of black granite boulders the size of cars and houses piled hundreds of meters high. Surveys have previously been conducted in the boulder-fields around the base of Cape Melville but the plateau of boulder-strewn rainforest on top had remained largely unexplored, fortressed by massive boulder walls.

Video: Frog breaks up fight between two shrimps









Could this be the most bizarre animal video on YouTube?


The latest weird clip features an assertive frog breaking up a fight between two shrimps in a no-holds barred underwater battle.

It begins with the two Indian whisker shrimp coming to blows at the bottom of a fish tank, ferociously attacking each other with their spindly legs.

The fight is quickly broken up when the frog plunges to the bottom of the tank between the warring pair, before a caption pops up: ‘Not in my tank.’

It has racked up thousands of hit since it was uploaded to the video-sharing site earlier this month.

New species of poison dart found in Guyana – By mistake

July 2013. Ecotourism and Conservation - Can it work? That was the question a team of scientists from the Senckenberg Research Institute in Dresden were investigating when, by chance, they found a previously undiscovered species of frog that only exists in a very confined area of the so-called Iwokrama Forest.

The Guiana Shield in the north of South America accounts for more than 25 percent of the world's tropical rain forests, and is one of the four remaining extensive pristine forested areas left in the world (Amazon, Congo, Papua New Guinea and Guiana Shield).

In a study sponsored by the Stiftung Artenschutz [Species Conservation Foundation] and the Verband Deutscher Zoodirektoren [Association of German Zoo Directors], the Dresden team, led by biologists Dr. Raffael Ernst and Monique Hölting investigated whether conservation of amphibians and ecotourism can be reconciled in the forests of Guyana. The investigations are being carried out in close co-operation with the international not-for-profit organization Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development.

Rocky Mountain College student studies relationship between trout presence and frogs in Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness – via Herp Digest

For two months this summer, Bo Walker had something of a Huck Finn existence.

The 22-year-old Rocky Mountain College environmental science student spent five or six days a week hiking in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, looking for frogs and fishing.

“This is why a bunch of my friends called me a lazy bum,” he told a small gathering at the Audubon Conservation Education Center on Tuesday.

Walker’s hiking and fishing was actually in pursuit of scientific knowledge. He was gathering information for his independent research project, an undergraduate thesis examining what effect the introduction of trout to lakes in the Beartooth and Absaroka mountains may have had on amphibian populations.

Wet mountains
It would seem that the A-B Wilderness is the perfect place to search for frogs. Hundreds of lakes dot the landscape at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 11,000 feet. Fish were planted in the lakes in the early 1900s – everything from rainbow to brook and Yellowstone cutthroat trout. The idea at the time was to provide fisheries for horsepackers and hunters who ventured into the rugged region. There were few backpackers back then.

Of 1,000-some lakes in the wilderness, more than 340 have been stocked with fish. Out of all those lakes, only two held native fish, Walker said.

He came up with the idea for his study while working for Fish, Wildlife and Parks on its mountain lakes crew in the A-B Wilderness two years ago. The crew annually assesses a portion of the lakes that have been stocked with fish and plants fish in some of the waters.

As Walker worked with FWP he began to wonder: “What are we doing to the landscape if we’re stocking nonnatives?”

“That’s one of the questions that fueled me in this study,” he said.

Frog land
The Absaroka and Beartooth mountains are home to two main species of frogs: the Columbia spotted frog, which tends to live at 3,500 feet elevation and higher, and the boreal forest frog. Both species can be found in waters as high as 9,500 feet in the A-B.

The frogs provide food for a variety of species. Besides fish, they are also on the menu for ducks, herons, otters, snakes and even other frogs. The frogs tend to also eat what fish do – mainly aquatic insects. So fish and frogs compete for the same foods where they are found together.

So what makes a place frog-friendly? Water is a must, but frogs also generally like to breed in shallow, warm waters where there is emergent vegetation. Sometimes, to find just the right place to live or breed, the frogs will migrate. They can travel up to 2 kilometers, or about a mile-and-a-quarter, sometimes covering up to 500 meters in a day.

“Which, when you consider they’re about the size of your fist or smaller, that’s pretty impressive,” Walker said.

The findings
Without researching the subject, it would seem logical that since frogs are fish food, amphibian numbers would be much lower in lakes where trout have been stocked. But that’s not what Walker found in the 50 lakes he examined — 22 of which had fish and 28 didn't.

Thirty-two percent of the lakes that did not have fish had amphibians. Yet 72 percent of the lakes with fish also had amphibians. If the lake had no fish, he had a 67 percent chance of finding amphibians and an 88 percent chance of finding evidence of amphibian breeding.

The problem, Walker said, is that to make the data statistically valid he needed to investigate 50 lakes with fish and 50 without, instead of 50 lakes total. To do that, he would have needed another him and more funding.

Despite his research, Walker said, scientific literature is full of studies that say “Fish do affect amphibians.”

But his study can’t say that fish are affecting frogs significantly. And there are a lot of other factors that could have skewed his one-time sample, everything from the dry, warm summer, to a milder winter that may have increased frogs’ overwinter survival. Ideally, Walker would like to persuade FWP to remove fish from a series of lakes to see if frog numbers rise in those waters.

Taking fish from waters would likely anger anglers, but Walker sees the issue more holistically.

“It’s important to keep frogs because they are part of the natural community,” Walker said. “What the ripple effects are of a species’ disappearance is not known.

“We should be good ecological stewards.”

New to nature No 75: Leptobrachium bompu


When it comes to frogs in the genus Leptobrachium, the eyes have it. Among its 27 species, there is a remarkable variety of eye colouration. In many species, the lower two-thirds of the eye is darkly coloured, while the upper third is a bright, contrasting colour, such as yellow, scarlet, blue or pale green.
Sanjay Sondhi of the nature conservation Titli Trust and Annemarie Ohler of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris recently described L. bompu, a new species from India that has a striking greyish-blue iris with a vertically oriented black pupil. The only other species with uniformly blue eyes is L. waysepuntiense from Sumatra.
Aside from the thousands of miles separating these two species are several distinguishing features: L. bompu lacks black reticulatations in the eye, has black bands on its limbs, feet, digits and upper lip, as well as irregular dark markings on its dorsal surface. Additionally, its skin is distinctly wrinkled compared with L. waysepuntiense. There were only two other species of the genus previously known from India, both of which are among those with yellow or scarlet eyes. The genus was once divided into species that have horny spines on the upper lip and those that, like L. bompu, do not. Recent studies, however, indicate that neither of these groups shares a unique ancestor.
