Rhino killed as poaching attempts increase amid India virus lockdown

A rare one-horned rhino has been killed as poaching attempts increase in one of India's best-known national parks during the coronavirus lockdown, officials said Sunday.

The lack of vehicles on the highway near Kaziranga National Park in Assam state—home to the world's biggest population of one-horned rhinos—amid the lockdown has seen animals move towards the boundaries, making them vulnerable to poachers.

"It is suspected that the rhino was killed at least two to three days ago," the park's director P. Sivakumar told AFP, adding that the rhino's horn was also missing.

Hunters can earn as much as $150,000 for one rhino horn or around $60,000 per kilo on a black market according to media reports, serving foreign demand for its use in traditional Chinese medicine.

"We have also recovered eight rounds of empty cartridge of AK 47" automatic rifle, Sivakumar said.

The rhino carcass was found near a water body inside the park, he said, adding that it was a confirmed poaching incident.

Officials said it was the first poaching case in the UNESCO-listed heritage site in a year. Previous years had seen numerous poaching incidents.

Four new butterfly varieties seen in Salem forest division

SALEM: Four new varieties of butterflies and a new bird species were spotted in the Salem forest division during the three-day census that was carried out jointly by the forest department and Salem Nature Society (SNS) recently. 

In total, they have recorded 214 varieties of birds and 136 species of butterflies in the forest division. V Gokul, president, SNS, said, “The bird and butterfly survey was carried out by 135 specialists from various states for three days from Friday to Sunday (February 14-16).” The survey covered all the nine forest ranges in the Salem forest division. According to N Murugesan, secretary, SNS, three of the four new butterfly varieties - common tinsel, pale four-line blue and transparent sixline blue - were spotted in the Yercaud forest range and the remaining one - chocolate albatross - in the Danishpet forest range. 

They were spotted by butterfly experts A Pavendhan, S Soundararaj, T Nagaraj, R Krishnamoorthy and K K Nilesh. Pointing out that common tinsel was usually seen only in the Western Ghats and Northeast India, he said this was probably the first time the butterfly variety was seen in Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu. The butterfly is small in size and comes with silver edged bands, grey-brown lower body and blue upper body.

Over 11,000 tortoises and freshwater turtles entered illegal wildlife trade in India every year since 2009 - via Herp Digest


New Delhi, 1st October 2019—To draw attention towards the illicit poaching and smuggling of Testudines in India, TRAFFIC reveals that a minimum of 1,11,310 tortoises and freshwater turtles entered illegal wildlife trade in a 10-year period i.e. September 2009–September 2019. This equates to more than 11,000 individuals in illegal wildlife trade every year or at least 200 per week since 2009. Considering that an unknown proportion of illegal wildlife trade presumably goes undetected, the actual numbers could be much higher.

Unauthorised extraction from the wild for illegal trade as pets, and for food and medicine, are the main drivers of this trade. The findings were revealed through a factsheet “Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles Under Siege” that provides an insight into poaching and illegal trade of tortoises and freshwater turtles in
India. 

Most of the turtles and tortoise species of India are protected under various Schedules of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, under which hunting, trade or any other form of utilisation of the species or their body parts and derivatives is banned. All turtle and tortoise species from India are also listed under CITES regulating their international trade. 

Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal emerged as the two major hotspots in terms of total number of animals seized, accounting for more than 60% of all reported seizures from 19 States and two Union Territories of the country indicating the wide expanse of this illegal trade. 

In total 14 Indian species of turtles and tortoises were found to be traded, of which Indian Star Tortoise Geochelone elegans accounted for 49% of the total identifiable individuals seized, followed by Indian Softshell Turtle Nilssonia gangetica (26%), Indian Flapshell Turtle Lissemys punctata (15%) and Black spotted or Spotted Pond Turtle Geoclemys hamiltonii (9%).

At the 18th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP18) held in August this year, Indian Star Tortoise was up-listed to Appendix I from Appendix II owing to its over exploitation. 

Tortoises and freshwater turtles in India are probably the most traded wildlife species in terms of their numbers in illegal trade. It is extremely worrisome to see the scale of the illegal domestic market for these species for the pet trade and for meat consumption.

added: "The size of seizures of Indian species within India is indicative of a well-organised network of collectors, transporters and traffickers operating this trade. Immediate action both in terms of law enforcement initiatives as well as awareness about the species concerned is required.”

Mr Ravi Singh, Secretary General & CEO, WWF-India added, “Turtles and tortoises are mainly scavengers and keep aquatic ecosystems clean while some species help keep populations of snails and insects in check. It is important that they are conserved in their natural habitat. We are hopeful that this study will highlight the plight of tortoises and freshwater turtles in India and will lead to enhanced awareness and related actions.”

Dr Shailendra Singh, Director of Turtle Survival Alliance India Program says that training wildlife law enforcement agencies in identifying the species in trade is crucial to combating its poaching and illegal trade. 

TRAFFIC’s present study helps assess the extent of poaching, identify trade hotspots, and understand poaching and trade dynamics in India.

An array of New snakes from India have been described - via Herp Digest

India has an impressive diversity of reptiles, with over 600 species recorded to date. But snakes and lizards remain poorly studied there, and new species are continually being described. 

Deepak Veerappan, Marie Curie Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Museum, specialises in south Asian reptiles. He has recently been involved in a host of papers describing three new species, a new genus and a new subfamily of snakes from across India.

Deepak has helped to describe the first new species of pit viper from India in 70 years, found in the northeastern province of Arunachal Pradesh, which borders Bhutan and Tibet.

Deepak was drafted in thanks to his specialised skillset. 'My colleagues needed help with a couple of things,' he says. 'One of these was inverting the hemipenis from a preserved specimen. This is a difficult task, and I have become quite good at it.’

Most male lizards and snakes possess what is known as a hemipenis. This is the organ roughly analogous to the penis in mammals, except it is formed of two branches and works in a slightly different way.

'Relatively speaking, the study of hemipenis morphology is only very recent,' explains Deepak. 'Studies began in the 1960s when people actually started to understand what it was. But later in that decade, it was realised that there are some groups of reptiles in which the characteristics of the hemipenis are important.

'When people started looking in more detail, it turned out that in some cases you can even use the hemipenis to identify individual species.’

Trimeresurus arunachalensis is the first new species of pit viper from India to have been described in 70 years. 

For different species of pit vipers, the shape and structure of the hemipenis is highly distinctive. To get a good look at it, the organ has to be inverted from the snake. While this is fairly straightforward in recently dead snakes, in preserved specimens it gets a bit trickier. This is where Deepak's skills came in. 

When compared to its closest relative - the new species' hemipenis was distinctive in that it was unforked and remarkably smooth.

T. arunachalensis lives on the ground and not in trees, and looks unlike any other pit viper in the region. These factors combined suggested that this animal was new to science. 

The species is only known from a single specimen, so DNA sequencing was needed to confirm the finding. 

Deepak and his colleagues have also named a new species of slender snake from the Eastern Ghats.
'We have also described a new species of vine snake from eastern and central India,' says Deepak. 'My colleague in India found the first specimen around nine years ago, but since then he has surveyed a lot in the same area and has found only three more individuals.’

The species belongs to a group that is fairly well known, making the discovery even more surprising.

Despite only having a few specimens to go on, to the researchers saw it was clear that it is a new species, now named Ahaetulla laudankia. It has distinctive colouration, pattern of scales and DNA analysis. The snake is a rich chestnut brown on its belly, and it has black speckles running all over its body. 

Found in the Eastern Ghats, Ahaetulla laudankia is distinguished by its distinct colouration.

It is also unlikely to be the only new species of vine snake. 'There are definitely more new species hidden within this group of snakes,' Deepak says. 'But it is difficult for many people to come to collections such as the Museum and check.

'So in the study we've published all the raw data, hoping that people from different parts of Asia can then look at it all and help uncover these other species.'

A group of burrowing snakes from south western India have long been an oddity. Belonging to the genus Xylophis, the three species of snake burrow through the soil and leaf litter in search of worms and other small creatures.

Limited to the Western Ghats, a region renowned for its biodiversity, the burrowing snakes are unlike others in the area.   

Deepak says, 'They looked similar to some of the natricine snakes, a group that includes many more common species like the European grass snake. But some people had speculated it to be something else.’

By sampling the DNA of two of the Xylophis species, the team were able to finally place these unusual reptiles on the evolutionary tree, though the results were not what they expected.

'Nobody in their wildest dreams thought that this burrowing species found only in the Western Ghats would be related to tree-climbing specialist feeders in southeast Asia,' says Deepak.

Despite living underground, the closest living relatives of Xylophis live up in the trees. 

It turned out that their closest living relatives were another group of strange snakes known as the snail-eaters. As their name suggests, these animals climb trees to feed primarily on snails, and their skulls having become astonishingly specialised in the process.
  
'This particular group has become so specialised to scoop out snail flesh that their head shape is unlike anything else, their heads are modified in a really dramatic way,' says Deepak.
This makes it all the more surprising that the ground-dwelling burrowing snakes are their closest relatives of Xylophis.

'We estimated that the split between the groups occurred around 40-50 million years ago, which makes sense as this is about the time that most of the animal and plant exchange happened between southeast Asia and peninsula India,' Deepak continued.

This divergence was great enough to warrant Xylophis becoming its own new subfamily.

The Western Ghats is also home to a group of natricine snakes known as Rhabdops. These semi-aquatic snakes are found in small forest streams, feeding on frogs and other reptiles. But included in this group is another species, Rhabdops bicolor, living far away in northeastern India.

 
The new genus was named Smithophis in honour of Malcolm Arthur Smith.

'This is quite interesting, because biogeographically they are found in two different areas, and yet are species of the same genus,' explains Deepak. 'So the obvious question is how are the Western Ghats snakes related to the one found in the northeast?’

Museum collections combined with new samples revealed that the two separate populations are actually two separate genera, with those in the northeast now belonging to the new genus Smithophis, named in honour of Malcolm Arthur Smith, who published three influential volumes on reptiles and amphibians of the Indian subcontinent.

Additionally, this new genus is not made up of a single species but two. The new snake species has been named Smithophis atemporalis.

The work being carried out by Deepak and his colleagues in India goes some way to highlighting just how much there is still to discover in the forests of Asia, and the importance of historic Museum collections that can be used as vital references.

Hell in high water: Braving the monsoon to save India's rhinos

The monsoon may bring respite from the scorching heat, but for the rangers and animals at Kaziranga National Park it also brings danger as poachers take advantage of greater camouflage and flooding.

The UNESCO-recognised reserve, home to two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos, draws hunters who can earn as much as $150,000 for one horn on a black market serving foreign demand for its use in traditional Chinese medicine.

Three rhinos have been killed so far this year.

And in rainy season, it can be an especially gruelling battle—the grass reaches head-height, providing perfect cover for poachers and flooding forces the animals to move to higher ground, sometimes to the outskirts of the park.

"We are always on our toes in this season. There is hardly any rest for us. Information about poachers entering the park comes anytime and we have to respond immediately," explains ranger Gopi Kanta Deka.

He and his dedicated colleagues—on duty constantly for weeks at a time in this period, sometimes sleeping out in the open—must follow the animals to protect them from harm.

"We walk in groups from one anti-poaching camp to another or paddle boats during high floods to reach those areas from where the information has come in and get to the job quickly," he adds.

Indian temple helps nurture 'extinct' turtle back to life

The black softshell turtle is officially extinct in the wild, but a centuries-old Indian temple and its nature-loving caretaker are helping the creature make a tentative comeback.
The northeastern state of Assam was once rich in freshwater turtles, but habitat loss and over-exploitation—they were once a popular local food—have massively depleted their population.
The black softshell turtle was declared extinct in the wild in 2002 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, while the Indian softshell turtle and the Indian peacock softshell turtle are classified as vulnerable.
But all the while, the pond of the Hayagriva Madhav temple in the Hajo pilgrimage centre has provided a safe haven, thanks to the sacred status of turtles protecting them from harm.
"There are plenty of turtles in the temple pond," said Jayaditya Purkayastha, from conservation group Good Earth.
The group has teamed up with the temple authorities in a breeding programme.
"The population of the turtle in Assam has gone down by a great extent. So we thought we needed to intervene and do something to save the species from extinction," he told AFP.

India's 'Tiger state' reports at least 11 rare cub sightings

Forest officials in Madhya Pradesh state, in India, have reported several tiger cub sightings, the first for years in some parts of the region.
At least 11 cubs have been sighted in the last week, including five in Panna Tiger Reserve and three each in Nauradehi and Ratapani sanctuaries.
In Nauradehi, armed police were called in to protect the cubs, sighted on 9 May, the first tiger births in the sanctuary for years.
Fourteen tiger deaths have been reported this year in Madhya Pradesh, which was once known as the “Tiger state” but lost its reputation due to dwindling numbers of the big cat, the Times of India reported.
One of the tigers was killed by a live wire trap earlier this month, resulting in the arrest of three villagers, who had allegedly laid the trap for game meat. Wildlife activists have blamed a lack of summer patrolling for the deaths.
Madhya Pradesh was losing the highest number of tigers a year in India, the Week reported. The 2014 wildlife census found the state had 308 tigers – the third-highest in India, behind Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. Available statistics show 97 tigers have died in the state since January 2016, many of them killed by poachers.

Meet India's starry dwarf frog, lone member of newly discovered ancient lineage

The starry dwarf frog is an expert hider. Plunging into leaf litter at the slightest disturbance, it has successfully evaded attention for millions of years—until now.
The thumbnail-sized species was discovered in India's Western Ghats, one of the world's "hottest" biodiversity hotspots. Scientists have named the frog Astrobatrachus kurichiyana for its constellation-like markings and the indigenous people of Kurichiyarmala, the hill range where it was found.
But A. kurichiyana is not only a new species to science. It's the sole member of an ancient lineage, a long branch on the frog tree of life that researchers have classified as a new subfamily, Astrobatrachinae.
"This is an oddball frog—it has no close sister species for maybe tens of millions of years," said David Blackburn, the associate curator of herpetology at the Florida Museum of Natural History. "With frogs, there are still ancient lineages out there awaiting discovery. This gives us one more puzzle piece to think about deep time."
Dark brown with a bright orange underbelly and speckled with pale blue dots, the frog camouflages well in wet leaf litter, and only a few individuals have been found.
"The coloration was the first thing that stood out to me, these starry patterns with a blue tinge," said Seenapuram Palaniswamy Vijayakumar, lead author of the species description and now a postdoctoral fellow at George Washington University. "We hadn't seen anything like this before."
But the starry dwarf frog nearly got overlooked in the crush of new species that Vijayakumar and his then-doctoral supervisor Kartik Shanker were finding on a series of expeditions to the Western Ghats, a 1,000-mile-long mountain range along India's southwestern coast.
Vijayakumar and Shanker, associate professor at the Indian Institute of Science, had designed a meticulous study, covering multiple elevations, habitats and hill ranges to record and map the region's frogs, lizards and snakes.

In Official List of India's Amphibians, 60% of Species Remain in 'Grey Zone - Data about 19% of species has been tagged ‘deficient’ and the conservation status of 39% hasn’t even been assessed. – via Herp Digest

New birds and mammals aren’t discovered that often. “But in the last 10 years, more than 100 new frog species have been described from India,” said Kartik Shanker, an associate professor at the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Bengaluru. So it’s “very valuable to revise amphibian lists periodically.”

On January 18, the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) published an updated list with details of the diversity of amphibian species in India, together with their conservation status.

“We have been updating the list every year since 2009,” said Dinesh K.P., of the ZSI’s Western Ghats Regional Centre, which undertook the exercise.

Numerous taxonomic studies, and other research projects, undertaken every year use it to track which populations they need to study more, and why.

In effect, the list is a government-authenticated document that collects all the available info on India’s amphibian taxonomy. And the database used to build it, and which it comes with, is a source of information for researchers, policymakers, herpetologists and students.

It’s also important from an international perspective because global databases consider only the big picture, and aren’t particular about the finer details specific to each country. With new species being found in India at a steady click, local databases are more suited to track local changes.

“Country borders are a dicey subject for global databases,” Dinesh agreed. Sometimes, he said, details about some species come with caveats like ‘species available in China might also be available in India’.

The list draws its nomenclature from the Amphibian Species of the World database. In 2009, it contained 284 species. Today, the number stands at 432 thanks to the concerted efforts of amphibian researchers across multiple biodiversity hotspots in the country to protect these animals.

To Seshadri K.S., research director of the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (in Karnataka), the list is a necessary accompaniment to the study of amphibians in the Internet Age.

He said that a handful of frog species had been described during the colonial period. And in those days, they “were described in journals, the descriptions were short and the specimens were either housed in the Natural History Museum of London or they were lost.”

So until the journals could be digitised, researchers were stuck with old publications and lax identification processes. As a result, “we would see different-looking frogs but would call them all by a [common] name.”

Now, with digitised publications as well as new techniques like DNA analysis and tomography scans, researchers are better equipped to identify distinct amphibian.

According to the new list, about 8% of amphibian species in India are endangered; 5% are vulnerable; 4% are critically endangered; and 2%, near threatened.

But surprisingly, data about 19% of species has been tagged ‘deficient’ and the conservation status of 39% hasn’t even been assessed. That’s 58% of them in a ‘grey zone’ of sorts.
Seshadri pointed out a 2014 study that said these species are very likely to be in one of the three threatened categories. They are, as defined by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, ‘vulnerable’, ‘endangered’ or ‘critically endangered’.

“Now that is scary,” he said. “But it’s also a wonderful opportunity to get our act together and focus on ecology, to be able to address important questions useful for conservation.”

One way out is to make the list itself more dynamic than it is. Instead of formally publishing a list once a year, the ZSI could maintain a digital version that is constantly updated based on new studies and nomenclature changes.
Abhijit Das, a scientist at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, said he’d prefer this. “The numbers keep changing and new species are often discovered, making such lists outdated very soon.”

A more dynamic list would also lend itself to more dynamic studies, with a small attendant risk of becoming outdated themselves. This is all the more important because research in amphibians hasn’t really taken off, according to Seshadri.

For one, frogs are harder to study. For another, it’s hard to obtain research permits to study them because of the dense green areas in which they live and breed.

But most of all, “people” – including from the forest departments – “seem to love large fluffy animals,” he said. They don’t care about frogs being killed in road accidents “but if it’s a tiger or an elephant, they spring out of their cushy chairs. And the same applies to most funding agencies.”

Northeast India is home to six new lizards – via Herp Digest

Not just remote forests, even crowded cities could be hiding new species. Researchers have discovered six new species of bent-toed geckos – a type of small lizard – from northeastern India, and one of them is from Assam's capital, Guwahati.
While researchers found the Guwahati bent-toed gecko (Cyrtodactylus guwahatiensis, named after the city) near a small hillock in the urban sprawl of Guwahati city, the Kaziranga bent-toed gecko, the Jaintia bent-toed gecko and the Nagaland bent-toed gecko have been discovered from Assam's Kaziranga National Park, the Jaintia hills of Meghalaya and Khonoma village in Nagaland, respectively. The Abhayapuri bent-toed gecko is currently found only in the vicinity of Abhayapuri town in Assam’s Bongaigaon district, and the Jampui bent-toed gecko, only in Tripura’s Jampui Hills. All the new lizards belong to the genus Cyrtodactylus and are called bent-toed or bow-fingered geckos, named after their bent toes.
The discoveries – by an international team from institutes including Bengaluru’s National Centre for Biological Sciences and London’s The Natural History Museum – have been published in Zootaxa. The researchers first searched for geckos along, and south of, the Brahmaputra River in northeastern India. The team then studied in detail the physical features of the bent-toed geckos they spotted in these areas. They compared them with specimens of north-eastern geckos in museum collections across India and the world, including the United States and United Kingdom. They also extracted DNA from the specimens they collected and finally confirmed the six as species new to science.

These species are known only from a single locality each, and nothing is known of their natural history, ecology or distribution except that they are nocturnal and live on rocks, said the authors. “They are likely to be narrowly distributed endemic species,” said lead author Ishan Agarwal, who was with the Villanova University in the United States and began working on bent-toed geckos at Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science, a few years ago.
 “Northeast India probably has dozens more bent-toed geckos,” he added.
The discovery increases the number of bent-toed geckos described from the Himalaya and north-eastern India to 15 (nine of which have been described this year alone). Since 2017, more than 20 new species of bent-toed geckos have been described from Myanmar, too. These new discoveries are a result of surveying areas that have never been sampled before from within the Indo–Burma biodiversity hotspot, said Agarwal.

Runaway leopard returns to Indian park after escape

A runaway leopard which escaped from an safari park in eastern India on New Year's Day has been recaptured after a massive search operation, an official said Saturday.
Wildlife authorities had deployed drones, trained elephants and set up traps with live bait to find the big cat after it escaped the park located in the foothills of the Himalayas, 557 kilometres (346 miles) north of Kolkata, capital of West Bengal.
The four-year-old beast nicknamed Sachin finally returned to its enclosure in the park late Friday, after a days' long hunt.
Nearly 100 foresters were pursuing the cat after its escape sparked panic in local villages.
"Sachin had been raised in captivity and could not hunt to feed itself," Vinod Kumar Yarad of the West Bengal Zoo Authority told AFP. "We kept a large chunk of meat inside the leopard's enclosure with its gate left open. On Friday night, it returned to its enclosure, injured and hungry," he said
Yarad said the cat was raised in captivity and lacked the ability to hunt in a wild, and had probably suffered injuries in an attempt to kill a wild boar or some other animal.
The animal is being treated for its injuries.

Undercover investigation: Socio-economic survey of pangolin hunting in Assam, India

Alarming footage captured by World Animal Protection and the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) at University of Oxford reveals the heart-breaking moment a pangolin is brutally killed for its body parts to be sold on the black market in Assam, north-eastern India.
The footage was captured by an undercover researcher on their mobile phone, and shows a terrified pangolin hiding from hunters in a hollowed-out tree clinging for life, as its tail is tugged. The hunters use axes to cut the tree, but failing to remove the desperate animal, they light a fire to smoke it out. As the pangolin starts to suffocate and lose consciousness it makes a bolt for freedom but is captured, bagged and taken to a hut where the next stage of the ordeal takes place. The pangolin is repeatedly bludgeoned with a machete until it can barely move. While bleeding, it is then thrown into a cauldron of boiling water possibly still alive, where its tragic struggle comes to an end.

Yet independent wildlife biologist Priya Singh, currently funded by UK conservation charity the Rufford Foundation, spent months at a time here to deploy and maintain 160 camera traps in an effort to spot the country’s most elusive cats. Her persistence paid off: she produced the first ever estimate of the marbled cat population in continental Asia and discovered one of its highest recorded densities of clouded leopards.
Her three-year study, published last October with zoologist David McDonald at the University of Oxford, involved combing the thick jungle of the Dampa Tiger Reserve, which borders Bangladesh and Myanmar. It is a protected park – on paper, at least – but Dampa is a tiger refuge where she found scant evidence of tigers. Singh’s results suggest that the lack of bigger cats has allowed both marbled cats and clouded leopards to spend more time on the ground and grow in numbers – her estimates put both populations at about five individuals per 100 square kilometres.
Gunmen regularly traverse the forest. While Singh was there in 2015, one armed group kidnapped 22 local people who were building a road in the park, and held them hostage until a ransom was reportedly paid. Along with images of cats, Singh’s cameras spotted many gunmen, and the cameras themselves were routinely stolen.

AI simplifies statewide study of leopards in south India

A six-year study of leopards in the wildlife-rich southern Indian state of Karnataka, using grids of motion-sensor camera traps across the state, suggests the big cats are thriving in a variety of habitats and land uses.

The researchers’ use of machine-learning algorithms significantly reduced the workload needed to identify 363 individual leopards from the sample’s 1.5 million camera-trap images. The figure indicates there are an estimated 2,500 leopards living in Karnataka.

Although a forest department official said the state was unlikely to expand its protected forests in the foreseeable future, the researchers said such a policy was necessary for leopard conservation, stressing that the proximity of natural landscapes to agricultural fields allows leopards to use those unprotected areas.

An extensive study of the leopard population in the wildlife-rich southern Indian state of Karnataka has indicated that these big cats are thriving there, buoying hopes the species’ genetic pool is stable in the region.

Researchers from the Karnataka Forest Department (KFD) and the independent research organization Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) jointly surveyed the cats in protected forests, private lands, rocky outcrops and non-protected natural areas spanning a diverse landscape covering roughly 27,000 square kilometers (10,400 square miles). They used grids of motion-sensor camera traps to better understand leopard distribution and habits in a variety of landscapes.

India man-eating tigress killed after huge hunt

A tigress in India which is said to have killed 13 people has been shot dead after a major hunt, officials say.

The six-year-old tigress had evaded capture in the jungles of the western state of Maharashtra for two years.

Last month wildlife officials deployed perfume in a bid to lure the animal.

Activists had campaigned to save the tiger, but India's Supreme Court said it would not interfere if forest rangers were forced to shoot it.

A team armed with a tranquiliser gun and a firearm was stationed in a vehicle on a road where the tigress, known as T-1, had been spotted by villagers, a Forestry Department statement said.

A patrol team went to an area near Borati village on Friday evening, after receiving reports of the tigress' presence.

A tranquilliser dart was fired at the animal. Once hit, the tigress charged the patrol's vehicle and she was killed by a single shot from a distance of between eight and 10 metres (26-33 ft), the statement said.

A post-mortem will now be performed on the beast.

In August the tigress and her two nine-month-old cubs killed three people in the area around the town of Pandharkawada in Yavatmal district and left more than 5,000 residents fearing for their lives.

Wildlife authorities in India trying to catch a tiger thought to have killed at least nine people say they are considering the use of an unconventional weapon: Calvin Klein’s Obsession cologne.
The six-year-old tiger, given the name T1, has been accused of preying on people in Pandharkawada, a town in Maharashtra state.
Rangers have thrown significant resources into their attempts to capture the animal. One of five elephants brought in to try to corral the big cat reportedly went rogue last week and trampled through a nearby village, killing a woman.
Sunil Limaye, a wildlife official involved in the hunt, said his team was still deciding whether to deploy the men’s fragrance, but it was an option.
The power of Obsession to lure big cats was first established by experiments at Bronx zoo in New York in 2003. The key ingredient is a synthetic version of the musk secreted by the civet, a small nocturnal mammal whose glandular liquid is prized for its powerful aroma.

The Frog Wedding Ritual Has Drawn Criticism Across the Country (India)

Minister of State for Women and Child Development Lalita Yadav has been in the headlines for attending and helping to plan a wedding. But it was not a typical wedding. The wedding was between two frogs. The ritual was done to appease the Hindu god of rain, Indra Dev. The ceremony was in Uttar Pradesh, a region struggling with terrible droughts for two years.

Droughts have devastating consequences in India, killing tens of thousands of people through massive famine. A frog wedding, although rare, is occasionally done. It is believed the wedding will help to re-establish a balance in nature. Indian citizens in Uttar Pradesh had carried out a similar ceremony earlier in the month. Yadav claimed the drought happened because nature was not “happy.” She explained that the ritual was what their ancestors would have done to stop the drought. Many political opponents have criticized Yadav for engaging in a bizarre ritual instead of trying to do meaningful policy actions. What has drawn particular ire is Yadav’s claim the ceremony was not supernatural but was utterly logical. JW Player goes here There has been no official comment from the government. Deadly fungus found for first time in critically endangered amphibian species in Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspot, India – via Herp Digest

A fungal pathogen which has led to the extinction of entire species in South America has been recorded for the first time in critically endangered amphibians in India.

Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) can cause the lethal disease chytridiomycosis, and is considered a significant threat wherever it is found.

It was first discovered in the Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspot, designated one of the eight most important global hotspots and one of the three most threatened by population growth, in 2011.

But new research led by the University of Plymouth has found it for the first time in caecilians, the critically endangered Amboli Toad (Xanthophryne tigerina) and the endangered white-lipped Cricket Frog (Fejervarya cf. sahyadris).

In a study published in Royal Society Open Science, scientists say there is currently no evidence to suggest the bacteria has developed into chytridiomycosis within the Western Ghats.

However, they say the situation should be monitored closely in future and that conservation plans within the region should aim to minimize the risk of the bacteria being spread more widely.

Christopher Thorpe, a postgraduate research student in the University's School of Biological and Marine Sciences, led the study alongside Plymouth colleagues Dr Mairi Knight, David Pryce and Lewis Davies.

It also involved researchers from the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College London, George Washington University, and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Maharashtra, India.

Mr Thorpe said: "The Western Ghats is home to the highest concentration of rare amphibians in India and a number of species which feature on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's red list. To find Bd among them is a cause for concern, although we have no way of telling at the moment whether this is a historical infection or something that has developed more recently.

"However, we have previously seen the effects that chytridiomycosis can have in decreasing - or in many cases wiping out - amphibian populations elsewhere in the world. So we urgently need to develop a greater understanding of any factors that might be regulating its existence in the Western Ghats, where the amphibians are already being threatened by habitat loss, habitat degradation, pollution and disease.”

The Western Ghats is a chain of hills that runs north-south for around 1,600km along the southwestern coast of India, and part of it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Scientists from Plymouth have been working in the area for several years, and recently published a study calling for rocky habitats to be protected in order to give endangered amphibian species a great chance of survival.

For this study, scientists visited 13 sites at a range of altitudes in the northern part of the region, and tested 118 individuals from 21 species.

Seventy-nine per cent of the amphibians tested positive for Bd, although it was not currently at a sufficient concentration to have developed into chytridiomycosis.

However, researchers did find infection intensity was much lower in coastal region where temperatures are higher, which could now and in the future provide a refuge from high intensity infection.

Rhino census in India's Kaziranga park counts 12 more

A census in India's Kaziranga National Park has counted 2,413 one-horned rhinos - up 12 from 2015.

The Unesco World Heritage Site, in Assam state, is home to two-thirds of the world's population of the species.

The census is carried out every three years.

It is an incredible conservation success story given the fact that there were only a few hundred rhinos in the 1970s, says the BBC's South Asia editor Anbarasan Ethirajan.

However, the conservation effort has not been without controversy.

The government has in recent years given the park rangers extraordinary powers to protect the animals from harm - powers usually only given to soldiers intervening in civil unrest.

About 150 rhinos have been killed for their horns since 2006, but in 2015, park guards shot dead more people than poachers killed rhinos.

Olive Ridleys of India Genetically different from other Olive Ridley turtles – via Herp Digest

KENDRAPARA: There is a significant genetic difference between Olive Ridleys of India and the turtles of Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia and other countries. A large number of sea turtles which lay eggs in the world’s largest rookery at Gahiramatha Marine Sanctuary of Kendrapara district and Rushikulya river mouth in Ganjam every year are an isolated population who live in the Bay of Bengal. These turtles have no link with the ones of the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, said Dr Basudev Tripathy, noted biologist and Deputy Director of Zoological  Survey of India, Kolkata.

Dr Tripathy has been doing research on Olive Ridley sea turtles in Odisha for more than two decades.

  “Our research work on Olive Ridley turtles on Odisha coast also showed that the turtle population in the State is quite different from the ones which visit other mass nesting sites of Costa Rica, Mexico and Australia. It also demolished the myth that Olive Ridleys come from Australia, Costa Rica and other countries from the Pacific Ocean for laying eggs at Gahiramatha and Rushikulya, said Dr Tripathy.

 “In 2008, we had fitted Platform Transmitter Terminals (PTTs) on 30 Olive Ridleys at Gahiramatha, Devi and Rushikulya. Around 14 turtles with PTTs arrived at Gahiramatha marine sanctuary from Sri Lanka a few years back. This proves that the turtles move around the coast of Sri Lanka. Olive Ridleys migrate long distances between their feeding grounds in the deep sea of the Bay of Bengal and nesting sites in Odisha. It is a myth that the turtles come from the Pacific Ocean, he said.

In April 2001, the Forest department, Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and turtle biologist Jack Frazier of Smithsonian Institution had also fitted four turtles with PTTs at Devi beach and monitored their migratory routes online. The PTT-fitted turtles circled the waters and only one was seen migrating south towards Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, all four turtles stopped transmitting within two to four months either due to some technical problems or trawler-related mortality, the official said.

The Forest department, in collaboration with  WII, Dehradun had also fitted tags on the flippers of 35,000 turtles from 1996 to 1999 in Gahiramatha, Rushikulya and Devi river mouths. “In the past, we have also sighted many tagged turtles on the same beach where they were marked.  Finding some tagged turtles in Gahiramatha and Rushikulya proved that the females return to the same beach where they first laid eggs. It has been proved by turtle researchers that female turtles lay eggs where they were born decades back,” he informed. Recently, more than a million Olive Ridleys laid eggs at Gahiramatha and Rushikulya due to sincere efforts of turtle researchers, forest officials, locals and others, Dr Tripathy added.
