Trophy hunting removes 'good genes' and raises extinction risk

Hunting animals that stand out from the crowd because of their impressive horns or lustrous manes could lead to extinction, according to a study.

Research predicts that removing even 5% of high-quality males risks wiping out the entire population, for species under stress in a changing world.

Animals prized by trophy hunters for their horns, antlers or tusks usually have the best genes, say UK scientists.

Removing these could push a species over the edge, they warn.

There is intense global debate over trophy hunting. Some argue that it should be banned or restricted, while others say it can provide valuable revenue for conservation.

Dr Rob Knell of Queen Mary, University of London, who led the research, said the assumption that so-called selective harvesting is not especially threatening to a population of animals does not take into account recent work.

''Because these high-quality males with large secondary sexual traits tend to father a high proportion of the offspring, their 'good genes' can spread rapidly, so populations of strongly sexually selected animals can adapt quickly to new environments,'' he said.

The biggest and the smallest of the world's animals are most at risk of dying out, according to a new analysis.
Size matters when it comes to extinction risk, with vertebrates in the so-called "Goldilocks zone" - not too big and not too small - winning out, say scientists.
Action is needed to protect animals at both ends of the scale, they say.
Heavyweights are threatened mainly by hunting, while featherweights are losing out to pollution and logging.
"The largest vertebrates are mostly threatened by direct killing by humans," said a team led by Prof Bill Ripple of Oregon State University in Corvallis, US.
"Whereas the smallest species are more likely to have restricted geographic ranges - an important predictor of extinction risk - and be threatened by habitat degradation."

Poisonous amphibian defenses are linked to higher extinction risk

Research published by a Swansea University scientist has found amphibians which have a toxic defense against predators -- such as the iconic poison dart frogs -- have a much higher risk of extinction than species which use other types of defense mechanisms.

The key finding of Dr Kevin Arbuckle's latest study, published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, is that poisonous species are 60% more likely to be threatened than species without chemical defenses.

Amphibians are usually considered the most threatened group of vertebrate animals and are experiencing population declines globally, raising conservation challenges.

The threats to amphibian biodiversity are numerous and include rapid habitat destruction, exploitation, and pollutants entering the environment.
Many characteristics of animals may be linked to contemporary extinction risk. For instance, certain traits are either known or suspected to influence factors such as mortality rates or the ability of populations to recover after declines, and are therefore potential predictors of extinction risk.

The work by Dr Arbuckle, Lecturer in Biosciences (Evolutionary Biology) in the University's College of Science, used amphibians as a model system and tested whether chemical antipredator defense is associated with contemporary extinction rates. This is possible by using conservation status (e.g. 'endangered', 'vulnerable') as a measure of extinction risk in species alive today.

Dr Arbuckle said: "The results of this new study suggest that while toxic defense can be great for avoiding predators, it might be bad news in the long-term for a species. It's another example of how evolution doesn't act 'for the good of the species', but instead for the good of the individual.

"The results also suggest that how a species defends itself might be part of the puzzle of working out which species are in need of conservation efforts.

"The study builds on my previous work, which found that toxic amphibians were also more likely to become extinct over their evolutionary history, and the next step is to figure out what mechanism is behind the link between defense and extinction.
Dr Arbuckle previously suggested three main possibilities to explain higher extinction rates in toxic amphibians, and figuring out which of these have been important are the focus of another study.

The different ideas are:
                       Costly chemical hypothesis: Chemical defense is energetically costly;
                       Marginal habitats hypothesis: Chemical defense allows shifts to 'marginal' (low carrying capacity) habitats, which are intrinsically more vulnerable, and;
                       Slow life-history hypothesis: Chemical defense is associated with slow life-histories, which damages the recovery of populations after declines.

Animals at risk of extinction being ignored by researchers

April 2014: Many animals in need of conservation attention are the least studied due to human bias, reveals new research by scientists from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). Their results found that large, wide-ranging carnivores that exclusively eat meat, such as wolves, are more likely to be studied than smaller carnivores with varied diets, even though these are often the more threatened.

The study looked at the number of research papers published between 1900 and 2010 for each of the 286 carnivore species. The authors then analysed the papers to see if research effort was linked to the characteristics or to the extinction risk of a species.

By analysing more than 16,500 papers they found that conservation status was not a significant driver of research effort, despite significant improvements in the tools used by conservationists to identify species most at risk of extinction.

Extinction risk as Aceh opens forests for logging

SOME of the richest and most biodiverse forests in Indonesia will soon be opened up for commercial exploitation under a plan drafted by the new government of Aceh.

The chairman of the Aceh parliament's spatial planning committee, Mr Anwar (who goes by only one name) has confirmed the plan would reduce the total forest cover from about 68 per cent of the province's land mass to 45 per cent.

Most of the newly threatened areas are lowland forests, home to orang-utans, tigers, Sumatran rhinos and other endangered species. Conservationists say the plan drastically increases the danger of their extinction.

Much of the forest has been designated ''production forest'' since the 1990s, but these areas were saved from logging and agriculture initially because they provided a hiding place for Aceh's armed Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM) insurgents, and lately by a moratorium imposed by former governor Irwandi Yusuf.

However, local newspaper The Globe Journal has reported the new draft spatial plan prepared under the recently elected governor, Zaini Abdullah, would open these areas for production.

The plan must still be approved by Jakarta, and conservationist Mike Griffiths hopes that will provide an opportunity to have it rejected.

The head of forest landscape in Aceh's Department of Forestry, Saminuddin B. Tou, told Fairfax Media that, in his view, ''it is time for logging concessions to be reactivated''. Asked if Mr Zaini was more pro-development than his predecessor, Mr Saminuddin said: ''I think he's proportional, whereas the previous governor, Irwandi, opened more areas for forests.''
