Eyeing echidnas: Study models echidna forelimbs to help shed new light on mammal evolution

These days, mammals can use their forelimbs to swim, jump, fly, climb, dig and just about everything in between, but the question of how all that diversity evolved has remained a vexing one for scientists.
To help answer it, Harvard researchers are turning to one of the most unusual mammals around—echidnas. These sprawling, egg-laying mammals have many anatomical features in common with earlier mammal ancestors, and so can help bridge the gap between extinct and other modern-day mammals.
Using a highly-detailed musculoskeletal model of an echidna forelimb, Sophie Regnault, a Post-Doctoral Fellow and Stephanie Pierce, Associate Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, were able to not only shed more light on how the little-studied echidna's forelimb works, but also open a window into understanding how extinct mammals might have used their forelimbs. The model is described in a November 14 paper published in Royal Society Open Science.
"Echidnas are not very well-studied, and little is known about their biomechanics." Regnault says. "There are few related species, and echidnas themselves can be difficult to study because they have very large spines hiding underlying movements. We made this virtual model using CT scans that allow us to look in closer detail at how the skeleton and muscles interact with one another."
The researchers discovered that the bony anatomy and muscles work together to optimize limb leverage and mobility for certain kinds of movements. In particular, the configuration of muscles support limb rotation important for the echidna's sprawling gait.
"This model gives us unique insight into not only the echidna but can also guide reconstructions of extinct mammals," Pierce says. "The similarities between the echidna forelimb skeleton and transitional animals can help us to understand the evolution of forelimb diversity in modern mammals."

Matilda the echidna beats crippling ant allergy – with a little help from science


Vets develop vaccine after first known record of an echidna being allergic to their core food source

Matilda is an unusual echidna. She is curious where her peers are shy, and gregarious where they are solitary. She is also allergic to ants.
For a species also known as the spiny anteater, that is a significant problem. It is the first known record of an echidna being allergic to their core food source.
Keepers at Victoria’s Healesville Sanctuary noticed something was wrong when Matilda, who came to the sanctuary as a three-month-old 700g puggle in 2010, was weaned off milk on to an adult diet of ants and termites. The symptoms became pronounced when she was two years old.
“She became really puffy and red around both of her eyes, there was a lot of discharge coming from her eyes, and it also affected her belly,” Healesville Sanctuary vet Claire Madden told Guardian Australia. “She lost a lot of hair and also the skin on her belly was really raw.”
Echidnas are prone to various types of dermatitis, usually caused by a parasite like ticks, mites or lice. They can also get secondary skin infections after a traumatic incident like a dog bite or being hit by a car, and also sometimes suffer from dermatitis caused by fungal infections that take hold when they are kept in poor conditions.
Vets at Healesville went through all of those options, trying various topical cures and subjecting Matilda to regular bathing and courses of antibiotics, all of which she accepted with good grace, before veterinary dermatologists at the Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre suggested an allergen test.

Fisherman scoops echidna from lake after it appeared to be swimming in an unwise direction, days after ‘distressed’ wombat rescued in similar circumstances

An echidna, an animal not often seen taking a dip, has been found swimming in Tasmania not long after fishermen hauled a wombat out of a different lake on the island with a net.

Recreational fisherman Nobby Clark said he spotted an echidna in Lake Echo swimming about 150m from shore – and heading further out.

Clark had been fly-fishing for about two hours when he saw the echidna swimming towards him. He told the ABC he’d mistaken it for another monotreme at first.

“I thought it was a platypus heading towards me but it turned out to be an echidna.

“His head would go under water and then his little periscope would come up for a moment and have a breath and head out a few more paddles. He was swimming pretty hard; I think he was trying to figure out how he was going to get home.

Rare albino echidna gets new home in Australia


A rare albino echidna has been released after being rescued on the outskirts of Canberra, Australia.
'Casper' was found by the side of a busy road two weeks ago, and has been recuperating with carers since.
His new home is Tidbinbilla, a protected nature reserve away from traffic, where it is hoped he will find a mate.
Echidnas are egg-laying mammals which use their long noses and tongues to eat ants and termites.
Brett McNamara, Australian Capital Territory Parks and Conservation Ranger, explains the rare find.
