Two-legged chihuahua befriends chicken

A two-legged chihuahua and a chicken have become best friends at an animal hospital.

Penny, the chicken, was part of an experiment and at nine weeks old was rescued by Alicia Williams, an employee at the Duluth Animal Hospital in Georgia, US.

Roo the dog was taken in after being abandoned in a park on a freezing February night last year. It is believed he was deformed from birth, possibly as a result of his breeding.

Metro reports that the two rescued animals have now become best of friends, spending lots of time together in the home and office of Ms Williams.

"Penny gets excited when Roo is around because she knows he's got treats and food all of the time," Ms Williams told the Gwinnett Daily Post.

"Whenever she hears him being fed, she steals his food. He loves snuggling with her because that's his big teddy bear.

"He runs over her sometimes because he doesn't realise how big his wheels are."

The Animal Hospital posts regular pictures of the duo on its Facebook page.

Fifi the dog and Bashar the snake have become unlikely pals - and even sleep together according to their owner. 

A Chihuahua and a Python have formed an unlikely friendship - after their belly dancing owner brought them together for a show.

Paula Staunton, 48, adopted Bashar, along with another python called Xena, to use in her performances.

And for Fifi the dog, who is a regular sight at the unique spectacle, it was love at first sight.

They often sniff each other out for a cuddle and fall asleep together on their own throne-shaped chair.

Paula, from Wallasey, Merseyside, believes their relationship is just like a human love affair.

Bell The Chihuahua Finds 2 Girls Lost In Georgia Forest

NEWNAN, Ga. -- A Chihuahua is being hailed as a hero after authorities say it sniffed out two girls who were lost in a Georgia forest.

The girls, ages 5 and 8, disappeared Monday for a couple of hours when they were walking on trails near their neighborhood about 30 miles southwest of Atlanta. As police and firefighters began to search for the girls, neighbor Carvin Young grabbed his 3-year-old Chihuahua and joined the search.

Rebecca Parga, the girls' mother, says her children play with Bell almost every day, and the dog is very familiar with them.

The girls, Carlie and Lacey, were scared when they were found but were not hurt.

Puppy born without foot to get bionic implant (VIDEO)

A dog born without a foot will soon become "the world's smallest bionic pet" after a procedure to fit the pooch with a prosthetic, titanium foot is completed.

The chihuahua—named "Peggy Leg"—was adopted from a shelter in Roswell, N.M., by a local chihuahua rescue group.

"When we were told about this program it was unbelievable," Mary Jewell of Enchantment Chihuahua Rescue told New Mexico's KOAT-TV. "It was like, 'Oh my gosh, she is going to be a bionic dog, with a bionic leg.'"

The group contacted researchers at North Carolina State University, which offered to do the bionic implant for free. (The rescue group is raising money to cover Peggy's travel expenses.)

"If she didn't get the procedure done," KOAT reported, "she would have to have her leg amputated because the weight of it puts too much pressure on her spine."

The procedure, while rare in the United States, is increasingly common in Europe.

In 2011, Mitzi—a 3-year-old German Shepherd whose rear foot had to be amputated after she was trampled by a horse—became the world's first dog to be fitted with a prosthetic ankle, according to the Daily Mail.

Rescue dog Nancy's potential for herding flocks was discovered after she was adopted by a sheep dog trainer. Ali Taylor, who trains rescued border collies, said the tiny dog picked up herding straight away. "I started in a very controlled environment but it quickly became evident that Nancy has natural ability and loves herding sheep," she said. Nancy was hand-reared after being taken to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home at just three weeks old with a skin disease caused by parasitic mites.

Tiny chihuahua set to join Japan police

A chihuahua named Momo (Peach) has passed the exam to become a dog in the police force in western Japan, in what seems to be a first.


The 3kg (6.6lb) dog is set to become part of a search-and-rescue team used for disasters such as earthquakes.

Its small size means it will be able to squeeze into places too narrow for dogs such as German Shepherds.

Chihuahuas, named after a Mexican state, are one of the the smallest breeds of dog.

"It's quite rare for us to have a chihuahua work as a police dog," said a police spokeswoman in Nara, western Japan.

"We would like it to work hard by taking advantage of its small size."

Momo, aged seven, will begin work in January.

Calif. woman says Chihuahua died saving her kids

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) -- A Northern California woman says her Chihuahua died protecting her children from two pit bulls that got into her apartment.

Mayda Estrella, of Richmond, says the family's Chihuahua, named Manchas, jumped in between the canine invaders and her 4-year-old son Sunday. A pit bull grabbed Manchas with its jaws and carried the Chihuahua away.

Contra Costa County animal services officials say the Chihuahua was killed, and the pit bulls are now in custody.

The pit bulls' owner says they had escaped their yard by chewing through a fence. Estrella says her front door was open when the dogs came in.

She says when she saw the dogs come in, she ran into a bedroom with her other child, a newborn baby.

County officials say the owner won't face criminal charges.

World's Ugliest Dog title goes to Princess Abby

An odd-looking chihuahua called Princess Abby has won the dubious title of world's ugliest dog 2010.

The grey and white pooch - which has a curved back and legs (as well as a scrunched up left eye) won the annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest in Northern California.

Each year the strangest looking dogs are rewarded, this years winner was malformed Princess Abby - rescued off the streets just five months ago.

Owner Kathleen Francis - who won $1,000 - says she ignored how the four-year-old looked when she took her in from the Humane Society which had found her malnourished and flea-infested.

To scoop the title, Princess Abby beat 14 other dogs in her category before making it to the final… where one look had her competition howling in horror.

Event vet Karen "Doc" Halligan said, "Princess Abby is the poster child for spaying and neutering your animals. Her looks probably stem from being inbred."

The World's Ugliest Dog Contest event is now in its 22nd year. Miss Ellie, last years winner had been due to challenge to regain the title but died earlier this month at the age of 17.

A chihuahua has made an amazing recovery in Australia after being stepped on by her best mate - a 900kg Clydesdale horse.

Little Berry was happily playing with her friend Leroy when the giant horse accidentally trod on her head.

Owner Abbey Newton, of Geelong, near Melbourne, said: "Leroy stepped back, right on her head. There was just this little tiny bit of her nose sticking out. I thought she was dead.

"There was this horrible high-pitched screaming noise. It was terrible".

Berry was rushed to the vet who offered to put the little dog down but Abbey decided to take her home to die.

Anxiously she checked on Berry every hour throughout the night and, to her astonishment, in the morning she seemed to have made a complete recovery.

"In the morning she just got up and ate the other dog's breakfast," added Mrs Newton. "She's had nine lives and it's cost me every time."
