Five men and the sea: huge marlin sinks Filipino fishing boat

October 10, 2018 by Cecil Morella
It reads like a modern day take on 'The Old Man and the Sea'—five Filipino fishermen cast adrift for days on a makeshift raft after a huge marlin sinks their boat.
The men were fishing in the South China Sea last week when a six-foot (1.8 metre) marlin punctured their boat's wooden hull with its giant bill, vessel master Jimmy Batiller told AFP on Wednesday.
Their 12-metre boat quickly dipped beneath the waves in the early evening of October 3, leaving the crew with little drinking water or food until their eventual rescue by the US Navy on Monday.
"It (the fish) hit the bottom of our boat, leaving two big holes. We suspect it was chasing a smaller fish. It swam around the sinking boat for a while, apparently disorientated," Batiller said.
The fishermen salvaged what they could, removing the outriggers, planks and barrels to create a makeshift raft.
"Our water ran out after two days. We waved at passing commercial vessels but no one came to rescue us. But we did not lose hope," the 42-year-old father of one said, adding the crew also ate raw rice and drank some seawater.
"When we were rescued, that was when our tears fell," said Batiller, who has since been reunited with his family in Subic, a port about 80 kilometres (50 miles) northwest of Manila.
Lucky to be alive
The US Navy said the men were lucky to survive, especially given the crew said they had drunk seawater.

350-Pound Marlin Jumps Onto Fishing Boat In Dominican Republic, Dies (VIDEO)

In Dominican Republic, fish catch you.

A group of Florida-based fishermen were fishing off the coast of the Dominican Republic Thursday morning when a 350-pound marlin leaped into the boat, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Fisherman Bobby Jacobson managed to capture the huge flopping fish on camera. Captain Eddie Wheeler says normally he releases billfish caught aboard his boat -- also known as the Marlin Darlin -- but this fish died of "self-sustained" injuries, according to WTKR. Wheeler gave the marlin to local fishermen.

While this 350-pounder definitely made a splash, it was nothing compared to the huge marlins that have wrought havoc on fishing boats in the past.

In October 2012, a 600-pound marlin jumped onto a boat and knocked down a skipper off the coast of Cairns, Australia.

Last January, a fishing boat off of Panama capsized just after somebody caught a gigantic black marlin. The marlin itself didn't cause the sinking -- but a series of photos posted on Facebook make it appear as if the marlin is bringing the boat down.

Woman, 85, reels in 850lb marlin

THIS tourist showed REEL skill snaring a massive 850lb marlin off the Australian coast — at the age of 85.

Great-grandmother Connie Laurie caught the monster marlin — known as the fastest fish in the sea — while on holiday in far north Queensland.

Connie had already bagged a 12lb mackerel, before casting out again and reeling in the much bigger fish.

She said: "Only twice did I get lifted out of the seat when it made a run, but I was able to get it right up to the back of the boat before we released it.

"It was just a magical sight to see this huge big fish jump out of the water."

Aussie Connie, from the Gold Coast, added: "It's something I've wanted to do all my life, to go out and fish for something big.

"I got my wish. It was absolutely fantastic and made my holiday."

Bob Lowe, president of the Lizard Island Game Fish Club, said it was an amazing feat.

He said: "It's very unusual for a lady of that age to be able to catch a marlin of that size.

"It comes down to technique - the skill of the angler and the skill of the boat driver combined. It's definitely quite an achievement."
