Texas man injured as bullet ricochets off armadillo

A man from Texas has been wounded after a bullet he fired at an armadillo ricocheted and hit him in the head, the local sheriff says.

The shooting incident took place in the Marietta area of East Texas.

Three shots were fired and at least one ricocheted off the shell.

The gunman was treated for a minor injury to the jaw, USA Today reports, but the small armoured creature has not been found and its fate remains unclear.

Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe told Reuters that the shooter opened fire in the early hours of Thursday morning when he spotted the armadillo on his property.

"He went outside and took his .38 revolver and shot three times at the armadillo," Mr Rowe said.

Authorities say a man shot an armadillo, but ended up accidentally wounding his mother-in-law when the bullet ricocheted off the mammal’s hard shell.

Sheriff’s deputies told WALB-TV that 54-year-old Larry McElroy fired his 9mm pistol at the armadillo on Sunday night in the southern state of Georgia.

Deputies say the bullet killed the armadillo, but bounced off the animal, hit a fence, traveled through the back door of the mother-in-law’s mobile home and the recliner in which she was sitting, striking her in the back.

HOMER GLEN, Ill. -- Roadkill is part of the routine for highway crews in northern Illinois, but the dead armadillo spotted along a Will County road was a bit of a surprise.

Armadillos are normally found in warmer areas in the South.

Homer Township highway crew member Dan Bills found the armadillo while doing road maintenance last week. Bills tells the (Tinley Park) SouthtownStar he'd seen armadillos while visiting Texas but was shocked to find one in suburban Chicago.

David Robinson works for the Will County Forest Preserve, and he says he wonders if the armadillo had some "human assistance" getting so far north.

Wildlife biologist Joe Rogus also says he's never heard of any armadillo sightings in the area. He says armadillos are expanding their territory but aren't capable of traveling long distances.

Armadillos Can Transmit Leprosy to Humans, Federal Researchers Confirm

Armadillos have never been among the cuddly creatures routinely included in petting zoos, but on Wednesday federal researchers offered a compelling reason to avoid contact with the armored animals altogether: They are a source of leprosy infections in humans.

Using genetic sequencing machines, researchers were able to confirm that about a third of the leprosy cases that arise each year in the United States almost certainly result from contact with infected armadillos. The cases are concentrated in Louisiana and Texas, where some people hunt, skin and eat armadillos.

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is an ancient scourge that has largely disappeared, but each year about 150 to 250 people in the United States and 250,000 in the world contract the illness. As long as the disease is identified relatively quickly, treatment with antibiotics — a one- to two-year regimen with three different drugs — offers an effective cure. But every year dozens of people in the United States do not recognize their skin lesions for what they are early enough and suffer lifelong nerve damage as a result.

Part of the problem is that doctors sometimes fail to consider leprosy in patients who have not traveled to parts of the world where the disease is endemic, like India, Brazil, Africa, the Philippines and other islands in the Western Pacific. Two-thirds of leprosy patients in the United States are people who have either lived or worked in such places before coming down with the illness.

But in a given year, about 50 to 80 people who have symptoms consistent with leprosy tell their doctors that they have not traveled to such areas or had any contact with someone with a leprosy infection. And in these patients, doctors may mistakenly dismiss consideration of a leprosy infection.

“These patients have always been a puzzle,” said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Now researchers are hoping that their study leads doctors to ask one more question of patients who have skin lesions that are numb in the center: Any armadillos in your life?

Leprosy now joins a host of other infectious diseases — including flu, H.I.V./AIDS and SARS — that are known to have jumped from animals to humans. Flu is thought to have first crossed to humans from migratory waterfowl several hundred years ago. H.I.V./AIDS first crossed from a chimpanzee about 90 years ago.

Dr. Fauci said that about 70 percent of new emerging infectious diseases were known to have animal origins.
But one of the interesting aspects of leprosy is that transmission seems to have gone in both directions.

Leprosy was not present in the New World before Christopher Columbus, and armadillos are indigenous only to the New World.

“So armadillos had to have acquired it from humans sometime in the last 400 to 500 years,” said Dr. Richard W. Truman, a researcher at the National Hansen’s Disease Program in Baton Rouge, La., and an author of the armadillo study, which was published Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Some studies have shown that as many as 20 percent of armadillos in some areas are infected with leprosy.

Armadillos now range from Colorado to North Carolina and have a similar habitat to opossums. Few armadillos live long enough in the wild to be seriously affected by the infection, Dr. Truman said, but those in laboratories suffer many of the same problems as humans and eventually die of liver and kidney failure.

The microbe that causes leprosy, Mycobacterium leprae, is a fragile one. It does not grow in laboratory petri dishes, and survives only a week or two in moist soil. Indeed, the only animals in which it is known to flourish are humans and armadillos, and researchers have long used armadillos to grow the disease, although its presence in armadillos predates such research. Because of this, researchers have speculated that some share of human leprosy cases reported in the United States and other parts of the Americas resulted from contact with armadillos, but there has not been definitive proof until this study.

The fragility of the leprosy bacterium suggests that infections result from something more than casual contact with an armadillo, Dr. Truman said.


“The important thing is that people should be discouraged from consuming armadillo flesh or handling it,” Dr. Truman said.

Mystery surrounds Iowa armadillo

WEVER, Iowa, May 19 (UPI) -- Experts said an armadillo found dead at the side of a southeastern Iowa road may have been part of an early species range expansion.

Ron Andrews, a biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said armadillos are commonly found in the south central and southeastern United States, Mexico and South America, but one of the animals was found Saturday at the side of the road by a rural couple near Wever, The (Burlington, Iowa) Hawk Eye, reported Wednesday.

He said the animal may have been part of an early species range expansion.

"In southeast Iowa, the chances are a little rarer than in southwest Iowa because the rascals have been moving up from the more southwesterly side (of the region.) But I do know this, nothing is impossible anymore in this day and age. You never want to say never," Andrews said.

He said the armadillo may have also been captured somewhere else and released in the area or it may have stowed away on a truck or a train.

"We have no way to know for sure," Andrews said. "It's one of those quirky things we're going to have to really watch as the next year unfolds to see if more show up."

Armadillo-Like Crocodile Roamed Brazil: Researchers

RIO DE JANEIRO - Fossils found in Brazil are from a crocodile resembling a large armadillo that was a predator in the area around modern-day Sao Paulo state 90 million years ago, researchers said on Tuesday.

The 6.6-foot-long (two-meter-long), 265-lb (120-kg) crocodile, named the "Armadillosuchus," appears to have been unique to that area, the researchers at Rio de Janeiro's Federal University said.

The creature displayed some characteristics of an armadillo, with bony plates on its neck and back.

It had a carapace, a wide skull, a short, narrow snout, and relatively small, specialized teeth that make it distinct from any other crocodile discovered, the university said.

"The Armadillosuchus is only found in the interior of Sao Paulo state and this is a surprise, partly because it challenges the idea that crocodiles are found in hot and humid climates," UFRJ paleontologist Ismar de Souza Carvalho told reporters.

"In this case, they are crocodiles that live in a climate that is quite hot, dry and arid," he added.
The crocodile lived during the Cretaceous period, when temperatures would have reached about 113 degree Fahrenheit (45 degrees Celsius), the researchers said.

Researchers displayed fossils from the crocodile at a news conference in Rio, including the head, ribs, and foot. The fossils were first found in 2005.
