Two Hector's dolphins have been captured by set nets during an electronic monitoring programme of the set net industry in Timaru.
The Ministry of Primary Industrues, the Department of Conservation, and the local industry worked together to monitor any interaction between fishing vessels and protected species, using sensors, cameras and GPS equipment.
Two Hector's dolphins were caught in nets during the 2012 to 2013 season; one survived and one died.
The results will be used with other research to make future decisions on the impacts of set net fishing on the rare dolphins.
