Closing the gap: Extreme desert gecko spotted on salt-flats in central Oman

The Gulf Sand gecko is a remarkable desert reptile in that it is the only lizard found habitually on sabkha substrate across large parts of the eastern Arabian Peninsula. These arid salt flats constitute one of the harshest habitats on earth, due to their extraordinary salinity.

The Gulf gecko, Pseudoceramodactylus khobarensis, belongs to a genus with a single species, and it is well adapted to this substrate featuring spiny scales beneath the fingers, long extremities and swollen nostrils.

Data on its distribution range showed a conspicuous gap between eastern United Arab Emirates and coastal Oman, across a distance of more than 450km. Yet previous research had shown that genetic variability was relatively low for this gecko species.

During a recent fieldtrip in Oman, an international team of herpetologists, led by Dr. Salvador Carranza of the Institute of Evolutionary Biology in Barcelona, visited this area, almost devoid of vegetation аs well as access roads and tracks, and was able to spot for the first time specimens of this exceptional gecko in inland Oman. These localities, situated almost 250 km, east and west, from previously recorded occurrences fill in the distributional gap for this species and help to better understand the genetic and morphological variability patterns observed. The study was published in the open access journal Biodiversity Data Journal.

Camels May Be Link to Deadly MERS Virus

A potential source of the new Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) virus has been identified: camels may be a carrier of the virus, according to a new study.

Blood tests of 50 dromedary (one hump) camels in Oman, a country in the Arabian peninsula, found that all had developed antibodies against the MERS virus, a sign that the camels may have been infected in the past with the MERS virus, or a very similar one, the researchers said. However, the actual virus was not found in the animals.

“These new results suggest that dromedary camels may be one reservoir of the virus that is causing [MERS infection] in humans,” the study researchers, from National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven, the Netherlands, said in a statement. “Dromedary camels are a popular animal species in the Middle East, where they are used for racing, and also for meat and milk, so there are different types of contact of humans with these animals that could lead to transmission of a virus,” the researchers said.

Disturbing shark slaughter in Oman

June 2013. HEPCA, the Red Sea conservation organisation, has been contacted recently by a supporter from Oman with disturbing stories of shark fishing happening on a daily basis. A courageous dive guide working in the region has provided HEPCA with some shocking photos and he is concerned that this activity is taking place all over the area.

The unsustainable slaughtering of sharks is pushing the species towards extinction. The brutality and wastage that goes into the poaching techniques are not just irresponsible, but immoral. 

The Rea Sea is one vast and interdependent eco-system; a small fractal unit of the singular and interconnected organism which constitutes the world's oceans and seas. Any destruction to one part of that eco-system has the potential of affecting the whole. Our oceans and seas are one magnificent eco-system in perfect resonance and there are no jurisdictional boundaries when it comes to their protection.

HEPCA will be in close contact with PERSGA, the regional organization for environmental conservation of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. PERSGA has been an important ally and supporter of our efforts and we are confident that they will respond.
