FOR many developers, news that great crested newts have been found is met with groans – but the RSPB has expressed delight at discovering them on its development site.
The amphibians are synonymous with thwarting building schemes.
But their presence has been welcomed by the RSPB, even though it means plans to extend and improve the Seabird Centre at Bempton will be delayed by a year.
Planning permission for the huge £640,000 refurbishment has already been given the go-ahead and the charity has received cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Work was due to start this autumn but will now be delayed while a painstaking operation takes place to remove the newts from the site.
