This population of tiger snakes looks to be having a rough time of it.
Many have head injuries and one in 10 are totally blind, but this does not seem to get in the way of them finding a good meal.
The
snakes live near a colony of silver gulls that breeds throughout the
year so their chicks provide the snakes with a constant supply of fresh
meat.
But
the gulls are valiant defenders of their chicks. Their stabbing beaks
are powerful and strong and they always go straight for the snake's
head.
Even
with the loss of sight, these hungry snakes are still able to pick off a
tasty chick or two thanks to their impressive forked tongues which they
use to follow smells.
