Baby sea lion found napping in California restaurant

An 8 month-old female sea lion was found sleeping in a booth of The Marine Room, a restaurant in La Jolla, California on February 4, 2016

A hungry baby sea lion picked the best seat in the house after wandering into a beachside restaurant in San Diego.

The cleaning crew of The Marine Room found the female pup Thursday morning snoozing in a booth with a view of the ocean.

"She said, 'Can I see the menu?' I asked if she had a reservation," chef Bernard Guillas joked.

Guillas' photos, which he posted on Facebook and were widely shared, showed the little sea lion perched in the plush booth. One photo showed her resting her head on the windowsill, as if gazing out at the view.

"She seemed to think: 'I must go back'," the chef told AFP.

Guillas, who is French and has overseen the restaurant for 21 years, said the sea lion entered through the restaurant's back door, after making her way up from the beach alongside the building.

Baby seal becomes stranded in field of cows

Bemused cows gathered round to inspect their unusual visitor

A five-day-old seal became separated from its mother and stranded in a field of cows.

It waddled out of the water and landed in a muddy puddle where it became the centre of attention for the 30-strong herd of cows, which gathered around and started gently nudging their unusual visitor.

The cows did not harm the pup which was suffering from hunger and dehydration.

The pup was spotted by a walker who noticed the herd behaving strangely and one look through his telescope revealed they had surrounded the youngster

She was saved by a birdwatcher who spotted her plight at an RSPB sanctuary on the banks of The Wash in Lincolnshire.

Ian Ellis noticed the herd behaving strangely and through his telescope saw they were surrounding the baby seal.

He went closer and realised the mother was nowhere to be seen and contacted the reserve wardens and the Natureland seal sanctuary in nearby Skegness.

Natureland experts told him how to move the pup safely as they sent staff to collect her.

Mr Ellis, from nearby Boston, picked up the seal with RSPB staff warden Toby Collett and took her to safety away from the cows.

Tiny grey seal pup found orphaned on a Scottish beach

February 2014: The Scottish SPCA is caring for a tiny orphaned seal pup found underweight and asleep on a beach in the Highlands. Scotland's animal welfare charity was alerted after a dog walker spotted the grey seal on Sandside Beach at Reay.

The six-week-old pup, which has been named Little Mermaid, will now be looked after at the charity's National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, Clackmannanshire, until she is old enough to fend for herself.

Senior Inspector Audrey Gunn said, "Little Mermaid was fast asleep on the beach when I found her. It was obvious she was underweight and far too young to be on her own, so I arranged for her to be transported to our wildlife centre for expert care.

Baby seal found in forest four miles from sea

A baby seal has been discovered in a forest four miles away from the coast by a perplexed walker.

A member of the public was strolling through Uppsala in Sweden when they made the shock discovery. Officials are baffled as to how the animal got there.

'A somewhat confused person called and said he was out walking in the woods where he had found a seal pup. I thought he was joking at first,' said local policeman Henrik Pederson, according to The Metro.

The pup was released into a nearby river. Robert Sandefors, who made the discovery, said: "He must have gotten separated from his mother and gone in the wrong direction."

March 2013. A rare black seal pup is recovering in the Scottish SPCA's care after being found struggling to survive on Aberdeen Beach.

The pup, known as ‘Liquorice', is actually a young male grey seal that was discovered by a member of the public; he was very weak and thin when discovered. His coat is jet black, which is very unusual for a seal of his kind.

Scotland's animal welfare charity is now rehabilitating Liquorice at its National Wildlife Rescue Centre at Fishcross near Alloa. Centre Manager Colin Seddon said, "Liquorice weighed only 14kgs when he was rescued and we'd expect a pup of his size to be at least 20kgs or more. It's common in grey seals for the male to be darker than the female, but Liquorice's coat is jet black which is very unusual. This is the first pup of this colour to come into our care for many years.

"There seems to be more sightings of black coloured grey seals in the north of Scotland and they do appear on Shetland, but not in large numbers. Thankfully Liquorice is doing really well and feeding himself without any trouble. His weight is increasing steadily and he's now a much healthier 19kgs.

"All going well we hope to release him back in to the water within the next month."

Distressed seal pup washes up on Saunton Sands

A DISTRESSED seal pup washed up on Saunton Sands beach earlier this week.

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) team were alerted at around 1pm on Monday by a woman who found the pup while walking on the beach.

The pup is thought to be around three to four weeks old and was seriously dehydrated and under-nourished when it was found.

It is the first seal to have washed up on the coasts of North Devon this year despite the bad weather.

Andy Cleverdon, of the BDMLR, said the pup is likely to have come from Morthoe, one of two colonies in the area.

Andy and his wife, along with Diana Lewis from North Devon Animal Ambulance, went to assess the pup which had become separated from its mother.
