Dolphin survives nasty shark bite

A dolphin is to undergo surgery in Australia after it was left with huge lacerations across its back after being attacked by a shark.

Nari the dolphin, one of a pod of 11 wild dolphins attending a nightly hand-feeding event at Tangalooma Resort, off Brisbane, was spotted bearing deep wounds from the bite of a large shark on Friday.

Until Monday the animal had not emerged for its nightly feed and it was feared it may have succumbed to the injury.

But the 14-year-old dolphin returned to his regular feeding spot on Monday night and was transported by boat to Sea World on the Gold Coast where he was checked by a vet and given antibiotics.

Secondary infection is now the dolphin's biggest danger, Trevor Hassard, from Tangalooma Resort said.

Nari has been placed in 15m x 6m pool adjacent to an operating theatre at Sea World and is calm but not sedated.
