TIRUCHI: Through adequate exposure to places rich in biodiversity, students of Zoology can be motivated to pursue specialisations like wildlife photography, wild life identification, bird watching, listing of birds specific to regions, and bird census, Aruna Basu Sarcar, Conservator of Forests, Tiruchi Working Plan Circle, said.
Inaugurating a day-long seminar on ‘Current Status of Zoological Studies’ at the National College on Thursday, Dr. Aruna advocated exposure visits to places such as Nagapattinam and Gulf of Mannar, and emphasised the need for zoology students to keep track of biodiversity in neighbourhood.
Through her lecture on ‘Role of Zoologist in Nature Conservation’, Dr. Aruna informed students about the opportunities that exist for them to work for the Wild Life Institute of India at Dehradun, which, she said, looks for candidates with Zoology background for knowledge addition. Wildlife Biology was an interesting subject. Zoology being a scoring subject, students can also try out on IAS, IPS and IFS, she suggested.
Students ought to be conversant with the five schedules of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, and the geographies of animal-specific national parks.
Survey
Expressing concern over disappearance of sloth bears in Panchamalai Hills, she felt that a zoological survey of Tiruchi districts and its surroundings was long overdue. The current dependence for data was on Nature Club, she said, calling upon people with Zoology background to play active role in the Club.
Presiding over, the Principal K. Anbarasu called upon students to make the most of the support the Central Government provides through the University Grants Commission and the Department of Science and Technology for Research and Development projects. The potential for research was high in the areas of gene cloning, biotechnology and environmental biotechnology, he said.
The Department Head P. Sivasamy and the Organising Secretary H.S.H. Hussainy also addressed the gathering that also included students of other colleges including Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, and Kurinji College of Arts and Science.
