Our Oceans Awash in Toxic Plastic Garbage - via Herp Digest

Scientists just published a paper with the first-ever estimate of all the plastic garbage floating in the world's oceans.
The results were astronomical: More than 5 trillion pieces of plastic debris, weighting 269,000 tons. These bits of garbage are distributed throughout the world -- equally likely to be found in the tropical waters of the South Pacific as the glacial bays of Alaska.
But what's even more telling is what the scientists didn't find in their surveys. While researchers expected to discover a large amount of microplastics, that is, plastics which have been broken down by the sun and waves into pieces smaller than 5 millimeters, the number of microplastics were an order of magnitude smaller than expected.
This recent study confirms other researchers' observations that there is a large discrepancy between expected and observed microplastic weight and abundance in the world's oceans. So, less garbage than expected -- good news, right?
Wrong. These bits of plastic didn't magically disappear -- instead, they have been eaten by fish, turtles and other animals that mistake the particles for food. In addition, many of these tiny pieces have sunk below the surface of the ocean, and either float in the water column where surveys can't reach, or have settled to the bottom where they can be ingested by snails and other bottom feeders.
When animals consume plastic, they also consume all the toxins used to create plastic, like BPA, along with all the pollutants in the water that plastics absorb while they float in the ocean. Studies have shown that the concentration of toxic chemicals, such as PCB and DDT, can be up to a million times greater in plastic debris than found in seawater. These chemicals are inherently toxic, and can cause serious physiological damage in animals. And since big fish eat little fish, more organisms ingest plastic particles indirectly via their prey organisms, and concentrate the chemicals up the food chain.
Larger pieces of litter, like plastic bags, pose their own problems for seals, sea turtles, birds and other animals that ingest them.
Plastics are a huge problem for our oceans, and it is only predicted to get worse. Almost 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and only 5 percent of the world's plastic is currently recycled. Researchers forecast the volume of oceanic plastic debris will only increase due to rising production of throwaway plastic, and consumers' insatiable desire for cheap and convenient plastic goods.
That, of course, assumes we'll keep doing what we're doing. But it doesn't have to be that way.
You can start by refusing single-use plastic goods, petitioning your town to enact plastic-bag bans and recycling every piece of plastic you can.
We'll need action at a higher level too. The Center for Biological Diversity, where I work, has petitioned the EPA to do more to keep plastics off our beaches and out of our oceans. You can do your part by pressuring your political representatives to take this issue seriously with new and aggressive policies that get us back on the right track.
Now that we know just how much garbage we are dealing with, it's time to start finding solutions to clean up our oceans.

Snakes Feast on Garbage City’s Rats (Bangalore India) – via Herp Digest

Bangalore (TNN):  After rats, it's snakes. Bangalore's growing rat colonies among the garbage piles are luring snakes which feed on them.

The sudden appearance of the reptiles in some residential areas has sparked off an alarm in a city struggling to deal with diseases spawned by garbage.

The BBMP control room registered a marked increase in complaints about the appearance of snakes.

"We usually get about 15-20 calls a month from residential areas to capture snakes. Now we get at least three complaints a day from across the city," said a control room official.

A few days ago, Sharat Babu, an environmental adviser with the BBMP's environment cell, rescued a red sand boa in Vyalikaval. On Tuesday, the BBMP received a call from residents of Police Quarters, Marappana Palya, Malahakshmi Layout, that a snake had been sighted.

"Around 9am, women from our quarters spotted a snake moving around. We called the BBMP control room, which gave us a snake-catcher's number. It wasn't of much help," said Chenna Byregowda, a driver who lives in Marappana Palya.

Byregowda said this was the first time a snake had been sighted here. "I don't know what the cause is, but there's a sudden increase in rodents in our area." He confirmed that waste collection is irregular, and there's a huge garbage heap next to the quarters.

The failure to dispose of solid waste effectively has led to a new problem: snakes in the city. BBMP claims its control room receives two or three complaints a day about snakes being sighted. BBMP's role is limited: it provides phone numbers of snakecatchers and there ends the issue. "Ideally, snake-catchers should report to us, but they don't do so regularly . We don't have a record of what happened to the complaints received," a control room official pointed out.

According to Sharat Babu, environmental adviser with the BBMP's environment cell, rats attract snakes which feed on them. "Rodents mate only when they find enough food around. They appear wherever there are garbage heaps and multiply," he added.

Ten months ago, a pourakarmika found a box in a garbage heap in Yelahanka and opened it to find a 9-foot long python in it. Ironically , rats also render snakes impossible to catch. "If a snake enters a rat hole, it's not easy to catch it. At times, rat holes span a length of around 0.5km," said Deepak Reddy , who works with the BBMP wildlife rescue team.

FLESH EATING GULLS DEVOUR WHALES ALIVE


Right whales (Eubalaena australis) off the coast of Argentina face the gruesome threat of being slowly eaten alive by birds every time they take a breath. The menace has become so great that local officials are planning to declare open season on the gulls and allow hunters to knock problem birds out of the sky, reported the AP.
The macabre torment of the whales sounds like a punishment from vengeful gods in a Greek myth or the plot of a Edgar Allan Poe story, but the real reason gulls have turned on the whales may be a bunch of garbage. Open air trash heaps near coastal cities have fueled a massive population boom in gulls. Fishermen add to the problem when they throw fish parts back into the ocean.
About eight years ago, the burgeoning gull population around the city of Puerto Madryn learned that they can get fresh meat from the whales. As more gulls learned the trick, the problems for whales increased. The gulls wait until a whale surfaces for air, then tear holes in the whales’ flesh and rip off pieces of skin and blubber. Each time the whales come back up, the gulls go in for more.
“It really worries us because the damage they’re doing to the whales is multiplying, especially to infant whales that are born in these waters,” Marcelo Bertellotti, of the National Patagonia Center, a government-sponsored conservation agency, told the AP.
