Man Discovers Cat Gave Birth to 4 Kittens in Bird's Nest in Ireland

May 29, 2015, 3:07 PM ET
AVIANNE TAN

While most people would expect to find birds in nests, Irish pet store owner Henry McGauley says he recently discovered four newborn kittens in a pigeon's nest on a tree in the back garden of his home.

"Henry had heard squawking in the morning, and he didn't know what it was, so he went up the ladder to investigate," Henry's wife, Fiona McGauley, told ABC News today. "That's when he saw four baby newborn kittens."

The couple believes the kittens were born there and that they were only a few days old when they were found this past Monday, Fiona said.

"Their eyes aren't even open," Fiona added. "We left them there because there's not much you can do because they have to be at least six weeks old before they can be taken from their mother."

Florida 'zombie cat' crawls out of grave

28 January 2015 Last updated at 10:37

Owner's neighbour Dusty Albritton: "I knew there was something wrong because I knew this cat was buried five days earlier"

A cat in Florida has had surgery after apparently clawing its way out of his grave following a collision with a car.

Bart was discovered by its owner's neighbour in Tampa five days after he was found lying in the road stiff in a pool of blood, and was presumed dead.

He is now recovering after treatment for a broken jaw and ruptured eye.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, which is caring for the animal they have dubbed "Bart the Miracle Cat", say they have never seen a case like it.

Bart's owner, Ellis Hutson, told the Tampa Bay Times he "couldn't stand" to bury the animal and asked his neighbour Dave to dig him a shallow grave.

Cat survives after being dragged 10 miles at 70mph

12 September 2014, 11:44

A cat hit at 70mph and dragged for 10 miles down a motorway had its ears burned off - but survived.

The moggy got its head wedged in the front grill when it was struck by a Peugeot on the A14 near Gisikon, Switzerland.

The proximity of the cat's head to the hot car engine during its horrific journey caused her ears and fur to burn off.

The driver, Stephanie Huber, said she heard a soft thud but hadn't thought anything of it and continued driving.

But when she parked up in Lucerne she noticed the front bumper had a cat's body sticking out of it, with the head wedged inside. When she saw the animal was alive, she had called police.

Swiss police spokesman Urs Wigger said: "After hearing that a motorist had struck an animal at 70 mph we were positive it wouldn't be alive, especially after then being carried along by the car for another 10 miles. When we found out that it had indeed survived it was a real surprise."

Group says saboteur is preventing rescue of cat with head stuck in bird feeder

The Canadian Press Aug 2, 2014 07:07:28 PM

BRANDON, Man. – Searchers who have been trying to rescue a cat with a bird feeder stuck on its head in Manitoba say their efforts to trap the hapless animal are being sabotaged.
The Brandon and Area Lost Animals group began setting out traps over a week ago after the cat, nicknamed Butterscotch, was spotted with the feeder on its head in a Brandon neighbourhood.

The cat couldn’t be easily captured because it could see out of one eye and was still able to run, and even jump, to evade the rescuers.

The group set traps, but says a man in the neighbourhood has shone lights, clapped his hands and used other techniques to scare Butterscotch away.

They say they’ve moved their traps onto private property, but their traps have been found and purposely damaged.

They say volunteers have spotted a man at night moving around the traps and shining bright lights, but that he moves back onto his own property by the time police arrive.

UPDATE:
Butterscotch the cat no longer has head stuck in bird feeder

Brandon animal group trapped him, bird feeder broke off in cage

The Brandon and Area Lost Animals group said it trapped Butterscotch and the bird feeder that was stuck on the feline's head broke off. (Facebook)

Butterscotch, the Brandon cat with a bird feeder stuck on his head, has been caught and is no longer wearing the bird feeder that has been stuck on his head for about the last two weeks.

BALA, the Brandon and Area Lost Animals group that has been trying to trap the feline, posted Saturday on its Facebook page that Butterscotch is safe.

The group said Butterscotch is being checked out by the Grand Valley Animal Clinic and he's in good shape.

The posting said while Butterscotch was in the trap, he broke the bird feeder, "exposing his handsome face to everyone."

Cat in central Florida goes wild; owner calls 911

DELAND, Fla. (AP) — A 4-year-old Russian blue cat named Kush is being quarantined after apparently going berserk inside a central Florida home, prompting its owners to call 911.

Police say the feline scratched owners Teresa and James Gregory on their arms and legs Saturday, causing the couple to retreat to a bedroom, where they called 911.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/1qUBOhY) reports Teresa Gregory told the dispatcher she had mistakenly stepped on the cat's tail earlier in the day and the cat went after her husband. They locked Kush in the bedroom for most of the day. When they finally opened the door, Kush wasn't happy.

Kush was placed in quarantine for 10 days at a pet shelter. Officials say the owners can then take the cat back home, relinquish ownership or have it put down.

Cat escapes horror 80mph car journey

A cat miracuously survived after travelling 50 miles underneath a Toyota Land Cruiser trapped inside a suspension spring.

Mechanics spent three hours getting the animal out and were baffled by how it became wedged inside the powerful spring in the first place.

Driver Vitaliy Bouranin said he had not noticed anything when he had climbed into his vehicle to set off on a business journey in Sakhalin, a large island in the North Pacific Ocean in south-eastern Russia.

He had travelled about 50 miles, most of it going over 80 mph, when he stopped for petrol at a service station.

He said: "As I was filling up, I heard a noise that sounded like a cat meowing. I thought it might be under the car so when I put the fuel nozzle back I looked under the car and couldn't see it, but I could still hear it.

"After a little poking around I finally saw a patch of fur and realised the cat had somehow ended up inside the spring.

"I have no idea how long it was there or far more importantly, how it got there. I would have said it was impossible for a cat to get in the middle of a spring like that but somehow it had managed it."

Cats found to eat more in the winter

Date:
May 28, 2014

Source:
University of Liverpool

Summary:
Cats eat more during the winter and owners should give their pet more food during this time, research has found. The study found that cats ate approximately 15% less food during summer, and the vets have concluded that the extra effort to keep warm in winter and the temptation to rest during hot summer days contributed to the swing in activity levels during the year.

Three Hospitalized After Pet Cat Named Khat Attacks Family

Three people from an unlucky California family were hospitalized after they were attacked by their pet cat.

The cat—appropriately named Khat—basically mauled its owner's entire family. Khat's owner's mother, sister, and 10-year-old brother were all treated for gashes a local hospital.

"The cat ran and jumped on [my brother's] leg and was like, attached to him," the owner told News 10. "He's never been an aggressive cat, he's never been mean, he just flipped."

The owner, who asked not to be identified, called Roseville police, who directed her to the Animal Control department. The office for Animal Control was closed, though, so the Roseville Fire Department took the call.

"Absolutely a first for us," Roseville Fire Captain Derek Carey told News 10. "We tried to push it into a cage, and it grabbed on to my engineer's boot and turnout bottom and was hissing and going off."

Eventually, the fire department trapped the cat into a cage by covering it with a blanket and forcing it into a cage with a metal pole. The cat was taken to the SCPA, where it awaits its fate.

The cat attack comes just five weeks after an angry Oregon cat trapped his owners in their bedroom, leading to one of the best 911 calls in recent history.

Vicious 22-pound pet cat traps Oregon couple - via D R Shoop

Portland police had to be called in to subdue a 22-pound house cat that trapped its owners inside their bedroom after attacking their baby.

The baby was not injured in the Sunday incident.

Sgt. Pete Simpson, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman, said officers responded to a 911 call that evening from a couple who had locked themselves in their bedroom with the baby and their dog after the cat attacked the child.

Simpson said the 911 operator could hear the cat screeching in the background as the couple awaited help.

Officers used a dog snare to capture the cat and placed it in a crate.

Mystery of 'Fuerteventura' cat found in Muchalls garage in Aberdeenshire

Mystery surrounds the discovery of a cat in an Aberdeenshire garage which has been traced via its identity chip to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

BBC Scotland has learned the cat was found by a family in Muchalls on Thursday.

They contacted Cats Protection before taking it to a vet, and the cat was traced to the Spanish island through an international database after the national one drew a blank.

It has been named Juanita.

Vet check

Efforts have been made to make contact via the chip's registration details, but without success.

Rosy Long, who found the cat, said: "I opened the garage and we found this small cat.

"We think she had just got shut in, she must have been desperate to get out of the cold."

Her efforts to find a possible owner locally failed, and the cat was taken to the vet.

She added: "The vet said 'bingo' when it came back she was from the Canary Islands."

Cat Stuck On Viaduct Rescued After 2-Day Mission By Firefighters (VIDEO)

A curious cat was stuck atop a Manchester, U.K. viaduct, blissfully unaware that firefighters were trying to save him for two days.

The black-and-white kitty was finally snared by a humane trap Thursday night, Manchester Evening News reports. Officials named him Lucky and are seeking a new home.

Lucky was first spotted on a ledge, 90 feet above a railway in Stockport on Wednesday afternoon. Kishore Kapoor, 55, who works at a cabinet making shop under the viaduct, saw Lucky and alerted the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, according to the Daily Mail.

At the time, Kapoor was worried about the little guy's safety.

The 70 miaows purr hour cat: Feline survives trip on motorway on top of van’s roof rack

When van driver Helen Stevens was flashed on the motorway, she thought there might be something wrong.

There was. A wide-eyed black and white cat was clinging to her Ford Transit’s roof rack.

It had travelled for 35km (22 miles) as she drove down the M1 in Leicestershire, hitting speeds of 70mph. ‘The van was carrying stepladders and the cat was clinging on for dear life,’ said Ms Stevens. ‘He was terrified. It must have got on at a petrol station when we stopped in Melton and we’d already gone all the way down the M69 and the M1.’

Ms Stevens, 30, of Wigston, near Leicester, took the feline hitcher to a veterinary clinic where he was found to be uninjured.

The vets put out an appeal online that was spotted by Ellise Pepper, mother of Kick Buttowski’s owner, five-year-old Connor Russell.

Connor, from Melton Mowbray, who has been reunited with the stowaway, said: ‘He held on and he didn’t fall off, but I bet he was scared.’

Mrs Pepper, 25, said: ‘He’s never done anything like this before, although he does hate to be on his own.’

In case you were wondering, Kick is named after a daredevil TV cartoon character.

Cat Caught Smuggling Pot Into Moldova Prison (VIDEO)

A cat that was being used to smuggle marijuana into a Moldova jail has been caught red-pawed by authorities.

BBC reports that the sneaky feline, which would frequently leave and enter the jail through a hole in a fence, was recently nabbed by prison guards. Two packets of pot were reportedly found attached to the cat's oversized decorative collar.

A video of the cat being searched (above) was posted on YouTube by Moldova's justice ministry this week.

According to The Associated Press, the Department of Penitentiary Institutions said Friday that "someone in the village of Pruncul was using the cat as a courier to supply inmates with dope at the local prison."
An investigation into the incident is reportedly underway.
This isn't the first time in recent months that a cat has been used to smuggle contraband into a prison.
In June, a cat that had cellphones and chargers taped to its belly was busted by guards at a prison near Syktyvkar in northern Russia. The Moscow Times reported that the cat was caught climbing the prison fence.

Video: Cat and dog in daring escape from kitchen

Meet Dexter and Gizmo. Their owner, Matt Hirst, would leave them in the kitchen while he was at work, but somehow, they were lazing around the whole house by the time he got back.

Curious to discover how the pair had managed to break free, he set up a camera by the kitchen door to see how they made their daring escape.

The stealthy cat does most of the work by climbing onto his scratching post beside the door. He then fiddles with the doorknob until it opens.

The dog looks on in hope, then reluctantly rushes out, presumably to have a snooze on a comfy sofa. Just before the camera switches off, he mischievously peeks around the kitchen door to see whether anyone saw their rule-breaking antics.

Sorry dog: this time, you were rumbled.

If you’re feeling impatient, fast forward to 01:35 on the video for the action.

Video: ‘Devil cat’ tells woman to ‘go away’

A woman has warned Dublin residents to keep their doors and windows closed at all times to protect against a ‘devil cat’ invasion.

The woman, known only as Caroline H, filmed the feline ‘invader’ hiding behind a curtain in her kitchen after apparently being tempted in by the smell of cookies.

The mewling black and white cat sounds suspiciously like he is saying ‘go away’, and after his green eyes flash white in the glare of the camera, Caroline’s off-screen companion can be heard to shout ‘He’ll jump on you, Caroline, he’ll jump on you!’.

The footage ends with the cat knocking over a pile of dishes and hanging precariously off a window frame trying to escape.

‘No cat was harmed in the filming of this video,’ she wrote on YouTube. ‘The cat safely left the house after I stopped filming. This cat was an invader after our cookies. Please keep all doors and windows closed to protect yourself against rogue angry cats.’

After the video was publicised in Ireland, a local resident came forward to claim the cat was hers, and certainly wasn’t a ‘devil cat’ as described.

Cat dressed as a shark rides a robotic vacuum cleaner for Shark Week

It might sound like something out of a budget horror movie, but this YouTube video is far from scary.

Take one very unimpressed cat, place it in an adorable shark costume and film it gliding across the floor on a robotic vacuum cleaner – and there you have the makings for an internet hit.

The bizarre – yet wonderful – YouTube video posted by texasgirly1979 shows a cat riding a Roomba for just under two minutes as its human cleans in the background.

Cat and tiny kittens dumped in bird cage

SEAN NOONE – 31 JULY 2013 02:30 PM
Tiny kittens were left dumped in a cage in Dublin city centre.

The six kittens and their mother were left abandoned in the rain in a cage better suited to a budgie or other household bird.

The cage was full of water having been left in the torrential rain when a DSPCA worker arrived following a call from a member of the public.

The DSCPA believe that the animals had been left in the cage for several hours judging by the amount of faeces present in the cage.

DSPCA's head of education and media, Gillian Bird, told the Herald that the kittens are recovering in their care.

"The kittens seem to be doing grand now. They were probably a bit shaken by the whole incident, the mother especially," she said.

Shield
"When we found them she was almost on top of the six kittens trying to shield them from the weather."

Ms Bird did warn that this incident is not unique.

"This type of illegal and cruel dumping is common at this time of year because people are going away or can't be bothered looking for an alternative," she said.

Cat saved by homeless man travels 3,600 miles with him, will return to family

A cat who left her Portland, Oregon home on a rainy night ten months ago will finally be returning to her family. On Tuesday, June 18, KCPQ 13 News reported that the cat, named Mata Hairi, will be reunited with her family after traveling 3,600 miles with the homeless man who saved her.

The Independent Record reported that the cat left her Portland, Ore. house on a rainy night and never made it back. She was later rescued by a homeless man named Michael King.

For a homeless man, a cat isn't the most convenient companion, but King saw that this little animal needed his help. When King found Mata, she was in poor shape.

"I didn’t pick her up because I wanted a cat. I saved her life," King explained.

One of her eyes was puffy from fighting and he helped nurse her back to health. King then took the cat with him on a 3,600 mile journey.

When he traveled to Montana, he took her to a veterinarian who found the cat's microchip and located her owner.
