The Internet Is Losing Its Mind Over Alleged Sightings Of The Legendary Goatman

BY: KIMBERLY RICCI 11.28.15

This year-old video, which hails from the the Strange Mysteries Channel on YouTube, details the history of the fabled Goatman. This hybrid creature has peppered popular culture since 1957 when it was first spotted in Maryland. I guess we could call this fella a cryptid, as he is presumably half-human and half-goat, but the video’s lead-in photo plays like a jokester who likes to hit the gym and enjoys fooling folks with goat-themed cosplay.

Regardless, the creature known colloquially as “The Pope Lick Monster” has recently (and allegedly) been spotted throughout Wisconsin, Texas, and Kentucky. That’s quite a stretch for a creature who would presumably be limited in gait as “a horned man with the cloven hooves of an ungulate.” His legends hold that he also possesses the strength to tear hikers apart with ease. Perhaps Goatman also moves with the ungodly speed of Looney Tunes’ Tasmanian Devil? Stranger things have happened.

These scattered sightings of the creature arrive not too long after the release of J. Nathan Couch’s book, Goatman: Flesh or Folklore? Couch, a Wisconsin-based ghost hunter, dug into the decades-deep history of the Goatman, who has frightened generations of teenagers who would otherwise hang freely in the woods for rampant makeout sessions. Well, maybe the Goatman did serve a purpose.

Goat Man Sightings In Kentucky, Texas, Maryland

The Goat man is a hominid cryptid most commonly associated with Louisiana, Maryland and Texas. It is described as a hybrid creature; part man and part goat. Some claim it is a relative of the New Orleans evil cupacabra like cryptid the Grunch. The urban legends of them often tells of it killing young lusting couples in parked cars or scouring neighborhoods killing family pets. There are also tales of them breaking into peoples houses and usually the raping of it’s victims. And many attest from the areas that he haunts, it does not matter if your a man or woman he will overtake you and have sex with you none the less, writes Damien Jennings, for Haunted American Tours.

The goat man is a bipedal humanoid resembling the faun or satyr of ancient mythology. He has the lower body of a goat and the upper body of a man with ram’s horns growing out of his head. The creature’s size varies from one report to the next, ranging from 4’ tall up to as large as 12’, with most between 6 and 8 feet tall. Most goat men are reported to make high-pitched squealing noises when agitated.  Goat men have also been reported in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, and Michigan

Goat Man Kentucky
According to  Erin Early , author of http://www.othersidesociety.com/,  the Pope Lick goat man is an urban legend of sorts centered around a railroad trestle in eastern Jefferson County, Kentucky, just outside of Louisville. Legend holds that the goat man, a predictably half-man, half-goat monster, haunts the area around the trestle. Sightings of the monster originated in the late 1940′s or early 1950′s, and most who claim to have seen the goat man describe it as having the fur-covered body of a man, but the head of a goat.

Utah solves its 'goat man' mystery

State wildlife officials have identified the man who has been spotted dressed in a goat suit among a herd of wild goats in the mountains of northern Utah.
Phil Douglass of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said Monday the mystery man is a 57-year-old hunter from Southern California.
Mr. Douglass told the Standard-Examiner that the hunter called officials and provided enough information to put their curiosity to rest. Mr. Douglass says he didn't ask for a name.
The man told Mr. Douglass he was preparing for an archery hunt of mountain goats next year and testing a goat suit. Mr. Douglass says the hunter came to Utah because he heard it was easier to get near goats for training.
The man described his suit as a hooded painter's uniform and a fleece

‘Goat Man’ In Utah Mountains Identified As Hunter

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A man spotted dressed in a goat suit among a herd of wild goats in the mountains of northern Utah has been identified as a hunter preparing for a Canadian archery season.
After a hiker spotted the so-called goat man on July 15 in the mountains above Ogden, about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City, wildlife officials said they wanted to talk to the person to be certain he was aware of the dangers as hunting season approaches.
They speculated he might have been an extreme wildlife enthusiast who just wanted to get as close as possible to the goats. A few days after the spotting, state wildlife authorities received an anonymous call from an “agitated man” who simply said, “Leave goat man alone. He’s done nothing wrong.”
This week, however, the mystery was solved.

More On The Rare, Elusive "Goatman" Near Ogden

What's weirder than finding a man dressed as a goat in the middle of nowhere? Absolutely nothing. What started as an innocent hike up Ben Lomond Peak to look for some mountain goats resulted in one Ogden man stumbling across what appeared to be either a hard-working scientist or a guy who lives with goats, as a goat, in a shitty goat costume. The surprised hiker is Ogden resident Coty Creighton, who posted his hilarious tale of "goatman discovery" a couple of days ago on the social-sharing site Reddit. Though humorous, the original story is somewhat skimpy on details, so I messaged Creighton for a full breakdown.
"This happened Sunday morning, July 15, at precisely 10:21a.m.," Creighton said to me via e-mail, "I know this because I was texting a friend from atop the mountain, telling him he was missing out on the find of a lifetime. I was heading to Ben Lomond Peak, but this technically happened on the slopes of Willard Peak, just to the North of Ben Lomond. At first, I was just watching the goats, but there was the one odd shape that just stood out. It was bigger and a brighter white than the other goats. I tried getting a better view with my camera but I didn't have a telephoto lens with me, so I still couldn't quite make it out. I could see it wasn't walking the same, and it seemed clumsy in comparison to the other goats. I was racking my brain trying to figure out what other type of animal it could be. An albino bear? Honky Sasquatch?"

Human beings-turned goats story, a hoax -Police

By VINCENT UKPONG KALU and MATTHEW DIKE

Yesterday morning, rumours spread like bush fire in the harmattan in Ojo, and other neighbouring towns in Lagos and Ogun States that seven human beings were turned to goats through esoteric means . The rumour also had it that the goats were detained in Ojo Police station. A motley crowd besieged the police station to witness the bizarre development.

Area's 'Goatman' legend hits the big screen ; Bowie Man's Film Premiered At South by Southwest Festival (via Paul Cropper)

Jimmy Tupper is a nobody. He spends his days working at a Starbucks and his nights drinking and playing Rock Band. His friends see him as a resident stoner and a waste of space. One night while he is passed-out drunk, his friends leave him in the middle of the woods in Bowie. The next day the friends return to where they had left Tupper and he is nowhere to be found.

When Tupper finally emerges from the woods he is beaten and bloodied, making outlandish claims. He has seen the "Goatman" of Bowie. A drunken rambling or truth? The fictional Tupper plans to prove it as fact.
Tupper's quest and the urban legend of the Goatman of Bowie take center stage in a film that premiered last month at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas.

The film's producer and lead actor, Andrew Bowser, created the film, "Jimmy Tupper versus the Goatman of Bowie," as part one of a trilogy of films about the urban legend he heard about growing up in Bowie. Filming for the entire production was done there.

Bowser, who most recently gained notoriety with his "Caps Rap" video, which became an Internet sensation, has been waiting for the opportunity to showcase his work on the big screen. The SXSW Film Festival, which originated in 1994, is a nine-day festival which celebrates raw innovation and emerging talent with a diverse program ranging from provocative documentaries to subversive Hollywood comedies. Bowser's production had three showings at the festival.

"The only way for people to see the film right now is if we are able to get into more film festivals," Bowser said. "I am going to enter more festivals and look for financing for 'Goatman 2.' " Bowser says his work is "part modern horror documentary and part old school monster movie. It's an innovative and quirky film that challenges the notion of found footage and what it means to be scared in the woods."

"The movie is more of a commentary on the genre that was made popular by 'The Blair Witch Project' in 1999," he added. Bowser, who plays the part of Tupper, said he made the film because he had been fascinated by the story of the Goatman since he was little. "I love the idea of having our very own monster, a hometown creature on par with the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Bigfoot," he said.

"My hopes are to get funding for the sequel and eventually complete my Goatman trilogy. Perhaps there is some rich doctor in Bowie somewhere that's always dreamed of being a movie producer," Bowser quipped.
Also appearing in the film with Bowser are fellow Bowie residents Pedro Gonzalez, Mike Eller, Micah Terrill, Rose Rodkey and Brittany Latorrre. The producers of the film, Gary Coby and Tim Kuczka, are also Bowie residents.
