Neonicotinoid insecticides linked to wild bee decline across England

Exposure to neonicotinoid seed treated oilseed rape crops has been linked to long-term population decline of wild bee species across the English countryside, according to research published in Nature Communications.

The research, led by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology using data provided by Fera Science Ltd and the Bees, Wasps and Ants Recording Scheme, examined changes in the occurrence of 62 wild bee species with oilseed rape cropping patterns across England between 1994 and 2011 -- the time period spanning the introduction of wide-scale commercial use of neonicotinoids.

The scientists found evidence suggesting that neonicotinoid use is linked to large-scale and long-term decline in wild bee species distributions and communities.

The decline was, on average, three times stronger among species that regularly feed on the crop such as Buff-tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) compared to species that forage on a range of floral resources, indicating that oilseed rape is a principle mechanism of neonicotinoid exposure among wild bee communities.

Neonicotinoids are a group of insecticide which can be applied to seed prior to planting. The active compound is expressed systemically throughout the growing plant so can lead to potential ingestion where pollinators feed on the pollen and nectar of treated crops.

These findings add to previous small-scale and short-term exposure studies which have identified negative effects of neonicotinoids on honeybees and a limited number of commercially-bred wild bee species.

For five of the species investigated, including the spined mason bee (Osmia spinulosa) and the furrow bee (Lasioglossum fulvicorne), neonicotinoid use was equivalent to at least 20% of local population extinctions of wild bees

New studies find that bees actually want to eat the pesticides that hurt them

A pair of new studies published Wednesday in Nature are disturbing when taken separately, but so much more chilling when laid out next to each other: The first provides new evidence that neonicotinoid insecticides can have a negative effect on bees, adding weight to the theory that these chemicals could contribute to colony collapse disorder and endanger our food supply. In the second study, another group of researchers found that bees don't avoid these harmful pesticides. They may actually seek them out and get addicted to them.

New report from European Food Safety Authority deems neonicotinoid insecticides as a high risk to honeybees


Wild pollinators such as bumblebees and moths contribute about 90% of UK insect pollination, which is worth £510 million to British farmers.

Wildlife charity, Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust has welcomed a report released by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) that deems neonicotinoid insecticides as a high risk to honeybees and also highlights the gaps in research on how neonicotinoids might affect other pollinators such as bumblebees.

EFSA's scientists have evaluated the risks that bees face from the insecticides Clothianidin, Imidacloprid and Thiamethoxam. The report concludes that "only uses on crops not attractive to honeybees were considered acceptable" because of exposure through nectar and pollen.

The EFSA also found that honeybees were at a high risk from neonicotinoids dust clouds created by drilling treated seeds into the ground and from guttation fluid (water sweated out by leaves and ingested by insects); risks which are not normally assessed when regulating pesticides. In addition, the EFSA report also identified ‘limited information' about the risk posed by neonicotinoids to populations of wild pollinators such as bumblebees.

In September 2012 Defra produced a report that stated that ‘no change in the existing regulation of Neonicotinoids is required'.

Matt Shardlow, Buglife CEO said "Buglife has been asking the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to follow the correct legal process, apply the precautionary principle and suspend all neonicotinoid insecticides immediately. We hope that these important findings will spur Defra into taking action".
