CHATHAM, Mass.—Two sailors have spotted a 14-foot great white shark inside a Cape Cod harbor, leading officials to bar swimming at the popular Lighthouse Beach and launch a sea-and-air operation to search for the predator.
Chatham (CHAT'-uhm) Harbormaster Stuart Smith says the shark was probably hunting for seals in the harbor when it was spotted Thursday morning.
Smith says the sighting is the first this year in the harbor, coming less than a year after several sharks were lured there by an abundant seal population.
Town officials sent out two boats and a spotter plane, but officials had not found it by Thursday afternoon.
Authorities plan to reevaluate the beach closure by Friday afternoon.
Five miles of beach in Chatham were closed earlier this month after several great white sharks were spotted.
