Was the 'Canadian Loch Ness Monster' Caught on Video?

By Benjamin Radford | LiveScience.com
7 November 2011

A man visiting British Columbia's Lake Okanagan last week claims to have captured video of Ogopogo, Canada's version of the Loch Ness Monster.

According to a report in the Vancouver Sun, "An Okanagan man has video he says proves the Ogopogo may be more than just a figment of our imagination. Richard Huls says he always believed in the possibility of the monster rumored to be living in Okanagan Lake. Last Thursday, while visiting a West Kelowna winery, Huls shot video that he believes proves something does indeed live in the water. 'It was not going with the waves,' Huls said. 'It was not a wave obviously, just a darker color. The size and the fact that they were not parallel with the waves made me think it had to be something else."

Ogopogo, some believe, has its roots in native Canadian Indian legends that told of a beast called N'ha-a-itk that would demand a live sacrifice from travelers for safe passage across Lake Okanagan. Hundreds of years ago, whenever Indians would venture into the lake, they brought chickens or other small animals to kill and drop into the water to assure a protected journey. It's clear, however, that these stories were not referring to a literal lake monster but instead to a legendary water spirit, and are not historical evidence for Ogopogo. Possible Ogopogo sighting in Okanagan Lake?

By Julia Wong, CHBC News
November 3, 2011

Could the myth be true? An Okanagan man has video he says proves the Ogopogo may be more than just a figment of our imagination.

Richard Huls says he always believed in the possibility of the monster rumoured to be living in Okanagan Lake.

Last Thursday, while visiting a West Kelowna winery, Huls shot video that he believes proves something does indeed live in the water.

The video shows two 40 foot lines in the water.

"It was not going with the waves," Huls said. "It was not a wave obviously, just a darker colour. The size and the fact that they were not parallel with the waves made me think it had to be something else."

Huls says he cannot think of what else could have caused those lines to form.

But even if the images turn out not to be of the Ogopogo, Huls says he still believes the lake monster is out there and he plans to keep his eyes open.

"It proves something is down there. Whether it's Ogopogo or not, it's a different story but there is something at least down there," he said.

Scientists Say Mythical Monster The Yeti Is Real, Lives In Siberia

Posted by JacobSloan on October 24, 2011

103770942The existence of a giant, apelike monster, alternately known as Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman, Sasquatch, et cetera, has long been scoffed at and dismissed as a hoax. However, an international team of scientists say the mythical beast is real and roaming the furthest reaches of Russia. Via TIME:
Scientists and yeti enthusiasts believe there may finally be solid evidence that the apelike creature roams the vast Siberian tundra.

A team of a dozen-plus experts from as far afield as Canada and Sweden have proclaimed themselves 95% certain of the mythical animal’s existence after a daylong conference in the town of Tashtagol in the Kemerovo region, some 2,000 miles east of Moscow. In recent years, locals there have reported sightings of the yeti, also known as the abominable snowman.

The Kemerovo government announced on Oct. 10 that a two-day expedition the previous weekend to the region’s Azassky cave and Karatag peak “collected irrefutable evidence” of yetis’ existence on the wintry plateau.

“Conference participants came to the conclusion that the artifacts found give 95% evidence of the habitation of the ’snow man’ on Kemerovo region territory,” read a statement. “In one of the detected tracks, Russian scientist Anatoly Fokin noted several hairs that might belong to the yeti,” it added. The group also discovered footprints, a presumed bed and various other markers.

The scientific community has historically disputed the existence of the yeti given scant conclusive evidence. But numerous sightings of such creatures have been reported in Himalayan countries and in North America, where it is known as Sasquatch, or bigfoot.

Reality TV goes in search of the skunk ape

By BRENT BATTEN
Posted June 13, 2011 at 4:14 p.m.

David Shealy’s been trekking through the Everglades for 35 years looking for the skunk ape.

This week, he’ll have company.

A film crew from California-based Authentic Entertainment, the production company behind reality TV shows Ace of Cakes (Food Network) and Flipping Out (Bravo) is in Ochopee to begin filming a pilot reality show intended for Discovery Channel in the fall.

Shealy, curator of the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters, has appeared on other shows about the legendary skunk ape, a yeti-like creature adapted to the wilds of South Florida, including "Unsolved Mysteries" and "The Daily Show."

He calls the Discovery Channel pilot the biggest project he’s worked on.

An Authentic Entertainment associate in Burbank confirmed that a film crew is in Florida on the project but the producers in the field declined to comment on the making of the show.

Shealy said they’ll employ a helicopter to get aerial shots and tour the 10,000 Islands by boat. Advanced technology, which he declined to describe, will be used as well, he said.

“The producers really want to put together a successful show,” he said.

Shealy knows not everyone buys the tale of the skunk ape, a 7-foot tall biped covered in hair and emitting a foul odor. The website for his Trail Lakes Campground on U.S. 41 in the Big Cypress Preserve, hosts an ongoing poll asking visitors if they believe in the creature’s existence. More than 25 percent of the 2,500 respondents either believe it to be a hoax or are skeptical.

But a majority either believe in the idea or find it plausible.

He says new information is surfacing all the time. “I’m hot on the trail,” he said, adding the fresh evidence points to the presence of a skunk ape around Sunniland. “New doors are opening. I look forward to bringing this to a close real soon.”

He hopes the Discovery cameras are on hand when he does. “We’re going to break new ground here.”

Saturday just after noon, to mark the occasion of the television production and as a way to thank his camp ground and Skunk Ape Research Headquarters patrons, he is hosting a fan appreciation day at the campground. There will be live music, food, soft drinks, Shealy said. He said he’s promoting a family event so alcohol won’t be sold, but he has a couple of cases of Swamp Ale, a specialty beer made in Florida that he may give out as prizes.

Local radio host Joe Whitehead is to serve as the master of ceremonies.

In the 1990s, Shealy gained notoriety when he tried to sell the county on the idea of using tourist tax revenue to fund an expedition leading the media in search of the skunk ape. The theory was that if the media could show the skunk ape to be real, tourists would flock here hoping to get a glimpse.

The idea actually won initial approval from the Tourist Development Council before being shot down by an unamused board of county commissioners.

In the intervening years, the explosion of reality TV means that an enthusiastic pitchman -- “I consider myself the top researcher in the country, possibly the world, on the skunk ape,” Shealy says -- can on his own get the media to come to the swamp in search of an elusive and possibly illusory creature.

Even if the cameras don’t capture a skunk ape, they’re sure to capture the beauty of the Everglades, all without taxpayers having to spend a dime.

If it ends up on a major cable network, that’s a win for Collier County either way.

Bigfoot Sightings: Spokane River, WA / Green Mountain Falls, CO

Click for video

It's not wreaking havoc like the Mississippi River by any means, or all those little creeks in southeastern Montana that are really screwing people on the Crow reservation, but the Spokane River has officially topped flood stage, and may just have flushed one of nature's most (only?) elusive (fictional?) man-apes into the open.

Yesterday, a YouTube user with the handle Samantha13950 posted a video that shows hikers wending their way down to the river. The video then goes dark and asks, "did you see it?" The video resets and plays again, in slow motion. Yep, sure enough. In the upper right corner — conveniently and beautifully illuminated by a ray of sunlight — a black, hulking man in a gorilla suit real effing sasquatch!!!???!! figure of unknown provenance walks through the frame:

Samantha13950 says on the post that no one noticed Big Foot until after they got home and checked the video (if they taped the entire lumbering hike that must have made for a less than exhilarating editing room sesh).

The Inlander has a team of 80 forensic videographers checking on the authenticity of this. In the meantime, though, can I just make a plea, on behalf of Big Foot, for humanity to step up its game?

The sasquatch have been playing hide and seek with us for millenia, and it's pretty obvious who's winning. I mean, they're always right there, crossing into a clearing — dappled sunlight creating a halo of light that may as well be a flashing "Big Foot here" sign — just as there's a camera rolling. - inlander

UPDATE: Samantha13950 says she isn't interested in "[getting] involved in a news story," but she did tell us where the footage was taken, and with what:

"I will let you know that we were in downriver park where the big hill starts to flatten out down by the river. The video is from my iphone. I was filming my friends slapping at ginormous mosquitoes and trying to get through some thick weeds."

There's no visible slapping of mosquitoes in the video, but it would be reasonable to edit that out when the focus of the video shifted from insects to a giant lumbering figure in the woods. The comment string on the video is already full of cryptid hunters debating the merits of the video, so we'll leave the analysis to them. (The best conversation happens between someone named BFResearchSE and someone named DistendedPerineum, for what that's worth.)

NOTE: another day...another Blobsquatch. What are your thoughts? Lon

Caught On Cam: Bigfoot In Colorado?

Is Bigfoot real? It’s a question that many have asked since the first sightings back in the 1800s when explorers began talking about an ape-like creature that walked like a man. Many scientists have brushed off reports that the creatures exists, and so far no real proof has been presented.

Daniel Masias hopes to be the one to prove Bigfoot’s exists. His fascination began in 1982 when he claimed to have seen two of the creatures near his Green Mountain Falls home one morning.

“In the winter, when there was snow, we noticed there were footprints. The prints didn't have shoes on them; they were just bare feet," he recalled. Masias described the creatures as hairy and less than 6 feet tall, but the footprints they left behind were not human-like. Masias said one creature has a foot span of about 12 inches, the other about 7 inches.

”So, not really big, about average human size," he said.

When asked why no one has seen these creatures or taken pictures with current technology, Masias said he thinks the creatures are coming through a wormhole, an intergalactic travel portal from one galaxy to another.

Masias isn’t the only one to have claimed to have seen Bigfoot. Ken French, a ranger for the Pikes Peak District, remembers seeing a strange creature near Centennial Point, near the summit of the peak. “I saw a dark uniformed color individual walking on the snow, and I stopped my tour bus and ask for binoculars,” recalled French.

He thinks the creature was about 1,000 yards away. "It was big and dark and it had a big gate, so it looked unusual to me.” French remembered that it walked like a person, but he felt it was odd at the time.

"It's not unusual to see people on a snow slope, usually on a ridge line walking, but you do see people up there occasionally, but it's usually a couple of people,” said French.

After the numerous sightings on Pikes Peak, ranger put up a Bigfoot crossing sign to warn visitors of what they could be in store for when they drive up to the 14,110 foot summit.

Masias is convinced he will get a picture of the creature, he thinks is Bigfoot. His motion-sensor camera already has snapped pictures that no one can explain, including one he said is an alien. - krdo - video available

Mystery Mersey ‘monster’ baffles marine life experts

by Laura Jones, Liverpool Echo
May 25 2011

A MYSTERY sea creature spotted in the Mersey has experts baffled.

The “monster” was snapped off Seacombe Ferry at 9am yesterday by photographer Mark Harrison.

Paul Renolds, from the Blue Planet Aquarium, who studied the photos, said: “It is virtually impossible to actually identify, but this is the time of year when large numbers of basking sharks, the second largest shark species in the world after whale sharks, head towards waters off the Isle of Man.”

He added: “If it is not a basking shark, it could be a smaller species of whale or a dolphin because there are around 23 different species in UK waters.”

Mystery beast causing panic in Quang Ngai province

Last update 12/05/2011 04:01:00 PM (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge - Hundreds of households in Binh Dong Commune of Binh Son District in Quang Ngai are living in panic after mysterious footprints were seen on the sand and loud roaring sounds heard in the area.

According to Cao Tan Son, police chief of the Binh Dong Commune, these mysterious incidents have been occurring since May 7 at the foot of Dinh Mountain in Son Tra Commune.

However, no one has seen the strange creature that could have caused such large footprints measuring almost 12-15cm. Over 20 dogs have also been killed in the area and now around 280 households of the commune are living in panic.

Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, a 70-year-old woman was the first to find her dead pet dog on the night of May 7. She said that her dog was found without its head and some body organs.

On the same night, four dogs were also found dead in the same manner, approximately 15-20 kilograms from Ngoc’s neighborhood.

Many households living near the Dinh Mountain said they had heard very loud roaring sounds.

In related news, in the border districts of Si Ma Cai and Muong Khuong in the northwestern province of Lao Cai, people have repeatedly seen strange species of dog like animals.

The strange creatures have bitten about 15 people in Ban Me, Thao Chu Phin, Quang Than San and Si Ma Cai communes in the two districts.

According to local residents, the strange doglike creatures have slender, long bodies, slanting red eyes and their fur coat is marked with white spots, black and white spots or yellow stripes.

They are seen wandering in the villages trying to prey on housedogs or attacking other domestic bred animals like chickens, pigs, goats and horses. They attack any person who tries to drive them away.

Discovery special reexamines Bigfoot

By Bill Harris ,QMI Agency
First posted: Monday, May 9, 2011 4:06:36 EDT PM

Bigfoot was a big deal back in the day. Kids naturally grow more skeptical about everything with each passing month, but Bigfoot represented the final frontier.

Santa Claus was a nice dream, but merely a dream. Real or imagined, the Easter Bunny was kind of creepy. And there were serious doubts about the specific intentions of the Tooth Fairy, too.

Bigfoot? Now there's something into which an eight-year-old boy can sink his imagination.

One wouldn't think that anyone in 2011 would be fascinated by Bigfoot, what with all those technological distractions turning us into emotionally dead but quick-to-anger freaks.

Thus, the biggest surprise of the new two-hour Canadian-made special Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide - which debuts Sunday, May 15 on Discovery -- is that there are scientists and amateurs out there who remain dedicated to proving or disproving the existence of Bigfoot.

This, of course, is fuelled by the fact that there still are plenty of supposed sightings of Bigfoot, the ape-like creature of legend that lives in dense tree cover or at high altitudes. In 2009, there were 250 unexplained sightings in North America alone, and some claim the number would be far higher if fear of ridicule didn't factor into the human equation.

Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide claims to be the first project to look at Bigfoot from a global perspective, weeding out the obvious frauds and comparing descriptions and legends of supposedly linked creatures such as the North American Sasquatch, the Himalayan Yeti, the Florida Skunk Ape and the Sumatran Orang Pendek.

Five experts from different scientific disciplines go over the material, including that same old famous footage, shot by a man named Roger Patterson in 1967, that has intrigued both Bigfoot fanatics and conspiracy theorists for decades.

It's kind of amusing watching the five experts interact in Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide, because two of them clearly are prone to belief, one is on the fence, and two barely can keep a straight face at times.

Regardless of your thoughts on the possible existence of Bigfoot, the five experts agree on one very interesting point: Even today, in our world of out-of-control urban sprawl, it still is fairly easy for certain species of animals to evade human detection.

And not just little animals, either. Certainly while our day-to-day lives can be very crowded, did you ever ponder that when you're in an airplane flying over virtually any part of North America, the continent still looks pretty empty?

Nonetheless, our mere usage of the term "evade human detection" leads to one of the main discussion points in Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide.

It is suggested that if Bigfoot exists, is it possible we've been getting it wrong as we seek out some sort of ape-like creature, when Bigfoot may in fact be closer to a wild, hairy, near-human?

We know, we know. Many of you are rolling your eyes right now. Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Bigfoot, they're all the same.

But hey, since vampires turned sexy, we have to be afraid of something, right?

'Yeti hand' replica to be returned to Nepal monastery

It is hoped the replicas will boost revenue at Pangboche Monastery
28 April 2011

A pilot from New Zealand is in Nepal to return a replica of what some believe is the hand of a yeti to a remote monastery in the Everest region.

Mike Allsop will fly from Kathmandu to the Everest region on Friday to take the models to Pangboche Monastery, which sits at 4,000m (13,123ft).

The originals were stolen from the monastery in the 1990s.

They first came to light in the 1950s when an expedition to find the mythical yeti came upon the monastery.

Mr Allsop will also take with him a replica of a yeti skull-cap, which was also stolen in the 1990s.

Lingerie box

"I will take these replicas back to the monks so they can replace the ones that were stolen," Mr Allsop told the BBC.

Peter Byrne, the leader of the 1950s expedition to find the abominable snowman, said that while the skull was probably made of goat or antelope skin, the hand did not match the skeleton of a human or a primate.

Mr Byrne managed to take one of the bones from the hand out of Nepal to his friend, the Hollywood actor James Stewart, who was on holiday at the time with his wife in Calcutta.

James Stewart's wife then placed the bone in her lingerie box and smuggled it into England where it was examined by a professor at Oxford University who said he could not conclusively say what kind of bone it was.

In the 1990s, an American television channel ran a documentary about the hand and skull. Shortly after, both were stolen from the monastery.

Mr Allsop said that he decided to make replicas of the hand and skull after trekking in the Everest region.

He approached the head of the New Zealand firm Weta Workshop, who were responsible for crafting the special effects and props for the Lord of the Rings films.

They agreed to make the replicas for free from photographs.

Mr Allsop has not yet told the monks in the monastery that he is returning with replicas of the hand and the skull.

He hopes that they will now be able to attract more trekkers to Pangboche, who will pay a small fee to see the artefacts.

"I want to help the monastery have an income again - I want to help them out," he said.

Town hunts for black panther preying on livestock

Joleen Chaney Reporting KFOR
5:47 p.m. CDT, April 26, 2011

POCASSET, Okla. -- Some Oklahomans are on the hunt for what they are calling a black panther or mountain lion that has been spotted near several homes.

The creature has been reportedly seen near Pocasset in rural Grady County.

"It was about half grown, had a tail about 4 feet long and it was solid black," witness Russell Dahl said.

It has become quite the talk of the town after a few recent run-ins with people, including Dahl's neighbor who had an encounter while on an evening jog.

"It liked to scare her to death," he said.

The animal is said to have been roaming the area for decades.

Dahl said he questioned the creature's existence when his son described his sighting, but he quickly became a believer.

"I said, 'You saw a coyote.' Well, the next day I saw it and it wasn't no coyote," he said.

Officials at the Oklahoma State Department of Wildlife say they've had a definite increase in the number of calls they've gotten from people who say they've seen big cats after a mountain lion was captured in Tulsa over the weekend.

"Sometimes I think they might be seeing a bobcat, maybe even coyotes, once in a while dogs," Game Warden Ron Comer said. "You can't always believe what your eyes are telling you."

The latest sightings in this rural little town haven't only given the locals a bit of a scare, but some say the cats have gone after their cattle and pets.

Whatever it is, experts say it could be one of a number of different animals.

"I never try to tell anybody that they didn't see what they thought they saw, but the melanistic gene does not exist in the mountain lion or the pumas or panthers or whatever you want to call the north American big cat," Comer said.

The melanistic gene increases an animals dark pigmentation, turning the animal black.

Within the past few years, new laws have allowed people to kill mountain lions or big cats if they feel threatened.

However, now there is no open season to hunt the animals and it is illegal to do so.

As for the cat caught in Tulsa, wildlife officials believe it was a caged pet that somehow escaped from someone who was not licensed to have it.

Expert reveals evidence of Sasquatch species

By Rob Jepson
Published: Wednesday, April 27, 2011

"My goal is not to convince, my goal is to open minds,"said Jeff Meldrum, professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University. Meldrum has been researching the specimen of Sasquatch for more than 15 years and has received national attention for his work, both positive and negative.

His research examines various evidences which suggest that the mythical creature Sasquatch may in fact be real. In particular, he hypothesizes there may be not only one creature living today, but as many as 500-750 of the Sasquatch species.

"People have been so conditioned that this isn't possible that when they finally see it, it upsets their whole equilibrium," he said.

Meldrum said many people, both inside and outside of academia, don't believe that Sasquatch could be real.

"Some of the naysayers adapt that position because such a creature, such a species could not exist under our noses and not have been discovered," he said.

Others, he said, don't accept the possibility out of stubbornness.

"There's a certain chic to being critical these days," he said, "and skepticism is worn as a bright red arm band by some individuals."

Dr. Robert Schmidt, USU professor of wildlife policy and human dimensions in the College of Natural Resources, invited Meldrum to come and speak.

"I met Dr. Meldrum a number of years ago and it was just interesting about how he, as a person with a credentials in science, how he uses that process to look at Sasquatch, which is a very different way than the other Sasquatch fans," he said. "He has this logical process by which he sorta says ‘I can include this information.'"

Ryan Carlisle, an international studies major who attended the lecture, said the presentation didn't affect his belief in Sasquatch.

"It's a possibility," he said. "I didn't totally discount it. It could be."

Halley Kartchner, a graduate student in human dimensions of ecosystems science and management who considers herself an amateur Bigfoot enthusiast said, "I thought it was really refreshing take on the legend of Sasquatch. My other exposure to it has been kinda crazy people I guess."

She said that while she's not completely convinced that Sasquatch is real, Meldrum's lecture made her more inclined to believe he could be.

"It was really good to hear someone with a Ph.D and all this background knowledge giving his take on it," she said.

Sara Preece, a graduate in marine biology from BYU, said, "I had never seen evidence presented the way he had. I feel like he presented it very factually, very evidence-based. He wasn't trying to change anyone's mind or convince anybody, he was just presenting objective evidence for people."

She said she doesn't necessarily believe or disbelieve that Sasquatch is real because belief connotes a religious type of conviction, but said Meldrum's presentation did make her think that Sasquatch could be real.

Meldrum said he himself is not positive that Sasquatch is real, but that the evidence compels him to continue researching.

Restrictive clauses and the Loch Ness Monster

04 Feb 2011 Gavin Hinks

OFTEN, it's all in the timing. Yesterday, Accountancy Age reported quite an outburst on the subject of banks forcing their clients to use Big Four only auditors through what are called "restrictive clauses" in their banking covenants.

It took place at the ICAS/Grant Thornton debate on the future of assurance. While many may consider restrictive clauses to be the Loch Ness Monster of financial arrangements (much talked about, but never proven) ICAS president Alan Thomson took the floor and blurted out that as chairman of a private equity house he had been forced to opt for a Big Four auditor by lenders. "That's not right," he proclaimed.

Many agree with him. Government minister Ed Davey has even said if such clauses are being used they should be a matter for the competition authorities. Positive, but not far from saying that if the monster does exist it should be a concern for zoologists, not crypto-zoologists.

But despite Alan Thomson's quite emphatic statement some people remain doubtful that restrictive clauses are actually real.

For example, last night the issue cropped up at the annual open meeting of the Financial Reporting Council.

During open questions one member of the audience asked the FRC what it was doing about restrictive clauses because they were, in his words, "profoundly in restraint of trade".

FRC chairman Baroness Hogg was much less certain. She said the regulator simply did not know the extent to which the clauses were being used and added more research was required.

Far be it for me to point out the obvious but that research now has a place to start - Alan Thomson. It would be no surprise if someone among the competition authorities felt the same way too. Or Ed Davey for that matter.

As far as I am aware the Loch Ness Monster has left little or not documentary evidence. This cannot be the case for restrictive clauses.

Chupacabra sighting in Goodyear?

Posted: 9:15 PM

* By: Wayne Berkowitz, ABC15.com

GOODYEAR, AZ - A video shot here in the Valley has some wondering what exactly was recently spotted running through a Goodyear neighborhood.

Darrin Jackson was driving his kids to school, when he noticed something unusual running from the park.

"It was all gray, no hair on it at all, maybe just a little bit at the top, and it had this funny looking tail," said Jackson.

Jackson believes what he viewed roaming the streets of Goodyear was a Chupacabra, a legendary hairless creature.

"It looks like an alien almost, so it's hard to forget that image because it's so weird looking and just to see it in broad daylight."

Jackson shot video while following the animal from the park to a nearby Fry's grocery store parking lot. It was there where the creature ran through an open gate and disappeared down a sewer drain.

Check out the video for yourself and let us know what you think.

Lake legend spawns mystery creature

Members of a rescue team stand around a giant freshwater turtle after successfully
capturing it in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem Lake last Sunday (April 3). The state established
a team of animal experts, veterinarians and conservation workers to capture the rare
turtle and administer treatment.
Last updated: 4/7/2011 8:00

Experts pooh-pooh claims of another animal spotted in Hoan Kiem Lake

Controversy has given way to mystery following the capture of the turtle with legendary status in Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake last Sunday.

It is said that while they were trying to capture the ailing turtle, workers spotted another giant creature surface several times, but foreign experts have expressed strong skepticism about the possibility, calling it “wishful thinking.”

As medical treatment gets underway for the captured turtle, scientists say the only hope of sustaining the species – and the legend – is to have a male turtle in another lake west of Hanoi be taken to China where it can mate with the only female alive.

Most experts believe the Hoan Kiem turtle belongs to a species called Rafetus swinhoei - of which only four members are believed to be left in the world. One lives in the Dong Mo Lake in the west of Hanoi, while two others are being raised in captivity in China.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Ngoc Khoi, general director of KAT, a local company hired to capture the Hoan Kiem turtle, told the media this week that his workers had seen another giant creature surfacing at different places.

“Thinking that there is another [giant turtle] in the lake is just wishful thinking,” said Douglas Hendrie, an American technical advisor from Education for Nature - Vietnam (ENV), the country’s largest conservation group. “Some people may want to believe so badly that there is another… in the lake, that they actually convince themselves there is.”

“If there is another animal there [in Hoan Kiem Lake], my first question is: how did it get in the lake?” said Timothy McCormack, a coordinator with the Asian Turtle Program. McCormack said that the turtle rescued last Sunday has been photographed for a number of years and it is quite easy to distinguish it because of many injuries found on its head, legs, and elsewhere.

“If there is a new animal in there, I find it very hard to believe it has been hiding for ten, twenty or forty years and just shows itself now. It is more likely that [it] was just recently put in the lake.”

Under treatment

Last Sunday, it took at least 50 people, including members of special forces, two hours to net the turtle which was later put in a cage and pulled to a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake. Veterinarians have carried tests to ascertain what is ailing the creature at a makeshift hospital in the lake that was recently expanded and equipped with a small holding tank.

A steering committee has been set up to make decisions about the turtle, believed to be more than a hundred years old, and which weighs around 200kg. The results of the examination are not known.

“Overall, the turtle is doing very well now,” said KAT’s Khoi.

“I think we’ll have to wait and see how serious the injuries are. It looks like a lot of treatment has dealt with the external and visible injuries,” McCormack said. “It would be interesting to know if there are any other internal infections.”

In recent months the giant creature has made both international and local headlines by surfacing almost twice as frequently as in previous years. Injuries and lesions on its carapace, neck, and legs have been photographed and experts have blamed the lingering pollution and illegal fishing at the lake for the turtle’s ailments.

“I really hope that [the treatment] is successful. I hope they will find exactly what is wrong with the turtle,” said McCormack.

Both McCormack and ENV’s Hendrie concurred that the Hoan Kiem turtle, whose sex is yet to be determined, was too sacred for any kind of breeding program. They pointed instead to the male turtle of the same species living in Dong Mo Lake west of Hanoi.

“Looking at the international breeding program, the animal from Dong Mo would be a perfect candidate. It’s quite strong,” said McCormack. “Of course people wouldn’t want the legend to leave the [Hoan Kiem] lake.”

The legend goes that in the 15th century, the turtle handed Emperor Le Loi a magic sword that he used to repel a Chinese invasion. After his victory, Le Loi returned the weapon to the turtle that dived back into the lake with the blade clutched in his mouth. Hoan Kiem literally translates as the “Lake of the Returned Sword.”

“For people of older generations like us, the cultural and historical significance of the Hoan Kiem turtle is irrefutable,” said Le Chuc, a prominent Hanoian actor and stage director. Chuc said since the turtle was captured, he has dropped by the Hoan Kiem Lake between three to four times everyday to check on it.

“I cannot imagine the day the turtle is not there anymore. Hoan Kiem would be just a lake with water,” Chuc said.

“As the world goes through tough times, I pray for the wellbeing of the turtle that is a shining light in this material world.”

Mystery of Cannock Chase 'beast' as new sighting is spotted

Mar 30 2011

Yet another sighting of the Cannock Chase creature has been reported.

Chasetown resident Sam Whitehouse was driving across the Chase when he spotted the creature near the German Cemetery.

Sam was travelling along the A34 to Brocton, then to Camp Road, at about 11.30am on February 28.

Sam, a retired civil engineer, said the image is ‘burned into’ his memory.

“A short distance ahead, something crossed the road from right to left,” Sam said. “It was very compact, stocky even, with a strong sturdy body, head and legs. It was black and appeared to be quite shaggy. It scuttled - scurried across the road - quite fast. By the time I got to the location of the crossing it had disappeared into nearby dense undergrowth.”

Sam, from Church Street, said he estimates the creature was about 3ft high and 4ft long.

He researched on the internet and found the closest comparison is the North American Black Bear. “It is omnivorous, its diet including insects, beetles, deer fawns, fish, berries and tender plant shoots. The male is bigger than the female. The species hibernates until March. It is typically 2-3ft high and 4-5ft long.”

Some local folk suggested to Sam that the creature could be a wild boar.

“But surely a boar would have relatively thin legs?” Sam said.

Years ago Sam also caught sight of the elusive black panther.

Don't let science suck the life out of Chupacabra story

John Kass
March 31, 2011

Once again, the cynics are going out of their way to debunk the existence of the Chupacabra, the hairless, bloodsucking vampire, or goat sucker, as it is affectionately called.

As millions of Americans know, it often sidles up to its victims, then rises on its naked haunches, before it feeds.

But now comes Benjamin Radford, managing editor of something called Skeptical Inquirer science magazine. His aim? To debunk the noble creature.

"I would say it's no more or no less as real as Santa Claus," Radford recently told KRQE, an Albuquerque, N.M., TV station.

Really, Mr. Radford? How sad. How nauseating. How utterly predictable.

And how positively dangerous for American taxpayers, if Mr. Radford and his cynics are able to convince us there's no such thing as a bloodsucker.

Let me tell you something, mister. As a newspaperman who often deals with politicians, I can tell you for a fact that Chupacabras do exist. I've seen them hard at work, drawing nourishment from millions upon millions of defenseless beings, gorging while making happy noises deep in their throats.

And if you ever caught them feeding and dared try to stop them, they'd probably pull a Sen. Chuck Schumer on you and call a news conference to shriek that those who would deny them nourishment are being "unreasonable" and "too extreme"!

Yes, the Chupacabras are often vicious. And yes, it is also true that for years I've wished to own one as a pet, to keep on a silver chain for my amusement.

But Radford isn't interested in what I want. He's the author of a new book, "Tracking the Chupacabra," as if I'll ever purchase a volume.

Radford, whom I have absolutely no intention of ever interviewing in my lifetime, wasted five precious years of his life hoping to trace the roots of the beast.

The reason?

He wanted to find the source of it, in the hopes of killing it in our collective mind, and thus rendering it extinct.

"It doesn't matter what I write," whined Radford to ABC recently. "It doesn't matter that I solve this. People are still going to see a weird hairless thing, and someone is going to call it a Chupacabra."

Or perhaps they'll call it a Schumer.

Radford says people like mysteries and have been fascinated by the idea of a beast that sucks goats' blood. "It captures the public's imagination," he said.

His quest begins with Ms. Chupacabra herself, Madelyne Tolentino, of Puerto Rico.

In 1995, Tolentino stunned the world by saying she'd spotted the vampire near her home. She described the creature as a biped, about 3 to 5 feet tall, with red or black eyes, skinny arms and spikes down the back. The Chupacabra had no ears and had small air holes instead of a nose.

The story aired in 1995 on "Cristina" — the Oprah Winfrey of Spanish-language television.

And soon, Chupacabra sightings popped up in Puerto Rico. Later the beasts were spotted elsewhere in Latin America, and the southwestern United States. Two were thought to have been shot dead in Texas in 2010, but these turned out to be dogs who lost their hair to strange mites.

Weirdly enough, no Chupacabra has ever been officially spotted in Washington, D.C., perhaps because they blend in so easily with all the other bloodsucking creatures.

Naturally, Radford also blames the media for promoting the Chupacabra phenomenon.

So, as his story goes, he interviewed Tolentino and got her to reveal a damning "fact":

That shortly before she confessed to seeing the Chupacabra in 1995, she'd seen the sci-fi movie "Species." The descriptions, he said, of the creature in "Species" and her "post-Species" Chupacabra were more than coincidental.

"To me," Radford was quoted as saying, "that was the smoking gun. It can't be coincidence, but this Chupacabra that's now popping up around the world just happened to look exactly like the monster in the sci-fi film."

Perhaps.

According to the equally credible Wikipedia, the film starring fine actors like Ben Kingsley and Forest Whitaker, "is about a group of scientists who try to track down and trap a killer alien seductress before she successfully mates with a human male."

The statuesque and somewhat blond Natasha Henstridge is the alien, who wears sexy clothes including (as I vaguely remember it) a skin-tight black cat suit. And she's also quite deadly in bed.

But in the interest of accuracy, I consulted the IMDb website, which offered the following review, which "30 of 37 people found helpful."

"For some reason, a quality cast … signed up for this knockabout trash about an escaped alien-human hybrid in a search of a mate … and is little more than an excuse for a few car chases and many sightings of Natasha Henstridge's (bosoms)."

This may be, but focusing on Henstridge's anatomy and her female-preying-mantis-mating ritual is a complete distraction. It's also a red herring.

But it's just the kind of thing that a devious creature like the Chupacabra, and its most eager manservant, Mr. Benjamin Radford, would want us to believe.

The thing is, there is absolutely no scientific proof that just because Ms. Chupacabra watched "Species," that she also didn't see a freaky Chupacabra outside her home a couple of weeks later.

Chupacabras are indeed tricky beasts. And their greatest trick is convincing people that they're not real.

But they always leave their tracks. Just look at your tax bill, and tell me they don't exist.

Mysterious tall creature reported In Pennsylvania

March 29th, 2011 9:15 pm ET

Roger Marsh
Paranormal News Examiner

A new Bigfoot case was made available March 29, 2011, after paranormal investigator and author Stan Gordon interviewed a witness from an incident that occurred in Butler County, Pennsylvania, March 18, 2011, between Chicora and East Brady.

Gordon investigated the encounter March 21. Chicora is a rural area about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Gordon is the author of the recently released Silent Invasion: The Pennsylvania UFO-Bigfoot Casebook - the incredible case notes and investigator's behind-the-scenes look at the hundreds of UFO and Bigfoot reports that were reported primarily in southwestern Pennsylvania in 1973 and 1974.

The new case Gordon reports on today is very similar to accounts received throughout the Pennsylvania region over many decades - an unusual creature crossing a roadway and seemingly not interested in the motorist who happens by and watches.

From researcher Stan Gordon - in his own words.
www.stangordon.info

On March 21, 2011, I was contacted by a witness who reported having an encounter with a very strange creature during the early morning hours of March 18, 2011. The incident occurred on a rural road in Butler County between Chicora and East Brady. The witness, a businessman passing through the area, stated that “this was the freakiest thing I ever saw, and it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck.”

The man told me that he was driving down the road when from about a qurter-mile away, he observed something on the right side in a grassy area. His first thought was that it was a deer. The driver stepped on the gas to move closer to get a better view. From about 50 yards away, he observed something that appeared to be hunched down, and then stood up. The driver then observed a very tall muscular creature.

At this point, the driver had his high beams on and watched as the creature walked in front of a yellow reflective road sign, then crossed the two lane road in three long steps and continued into a wooded area. What he saw was a humanoid figure that stood at least 8 feet tall that appeared to have smooth leather-like skin that was of either a darker tan or light brown color.

The creature never looked at the witness, and was only observed from its side. The head appeared to be flat in the front section, and then rounded out. “At the top back of skull, it was like one of those aerodynamic helmets. The top was not quite a point, but looked like a ridge on top of the head.” The face was flat, and the eyes were not clearly defined, but the man thought that they might have been pointed in the corner. The ear that was observed on the left side was long and flat, and came up and back and was pointed backwards like a flap.

The arms were muscular and a little longer than that of a human. The hands looked more like a claw, but the number of fingers was unclear. One physical trait that stood out was the extremely muscular legs. The witness stated that it was hard to explain, but the legs did not move like that of a human, and “looked like they bent backwards.” The witness also saw what appeared to be wings on its back which were tucked into its body, with the wing tips extending toward the side of its head.

No unusual sounds or smells were noticed during the observation which was estimated to have been about 7-8 seconds. As the motorist approached the location where the creature entered the woods, it could no longer be seen. The next day the witness decided to drive back to the location of the encounter to look for any evidence. The ground conditions were not suitable for tracks, and nothing was found. The witness did, however, measure the road sign that the creature had walked in front of. The sign was just over 8 feet high, and the head of the creature was estimated to have reached about 4 inches above the sign.

Are Chupacabra Recollections Real?

Analysis by Benjamin Radford
Thu Mar 24, 2011 07:08 PM ET

As reported here on Discovery News and elsewhere, the origin of the mysterious vampire beast el chupacabra can be traced back to an eyewitness who saw the 1995 film Species, which featured an identical monster. Most people assume that the chupacabra dates back decades, though in my research the best evidence so far is that it has only been around for about 15 years.

SLIDE SHOW: Chupacabra Inspired by Horror Film Beast

Certainly, vampire beliefs have existed for millennia all around the world, and there was a pre-existing belief that something mysterious was occasionally attacking animals prior to 1995 in Puerto Rico (and elsewhere, including Nebraska). And, as researcher Loren Coleman discovered, there was a 1960 mention of a "chupacabra" in the TV show "Bonanza," referring to a whippoorwill bird.

But so far there seems no reference to a blood-sucking monster called "chupacabra" before mid-1995 in Puerto Rico (or anywhere else).

And yet one common reaction I've gotten from readers about my chupacabra research is that the monster did indeed exist before 1995, because they heard about it as early as the 1950s. A few examples taken from recent posted comments on the story:

LeahMEseny: "I grew up in New Mexico and remember hearing stories about the chupacabra in the 80s."

Hiram Mag: "This story dates back to the 50s and 60s in Texas."

Glory Mooncalled: "I grew up hearing of it in the 70s and 80s."

Mousekakat: "I am just shy of 45, and grew up in Houston hearing about the chupacabra."

AlisonP: "I was at Arecibo Radio Observatory [in Puerto Rico] in 1993, and the legend of chupacabra was already pretty widespread then."

In all, nearly a dozen people insist that they heard about the chupacabra before 1995. (Note that even if there exists a reference to a “chupacabra” before 1995 it has no bearing on the fact that the description of the original Puerto Rican chupacabra was inspired by the film Species. The only question is if the word itself was in use earlier.) What can we make of these reports? There are only a few possibilities:

1) The "chupacabra" (vampiric monster) was known, written about, and discussed decades earlier than current research shows; or

2) We have a fascinating memory experiment in progress, in which dozens (perhaps hundreds) of people are incorrectly remembering the same thing: hearing stories about the chupacabra from decades ago.

Who's right? I honestly have no idea. Just because I didn't find any references to a vampiric “chupacabra” before 1995 doesn't mean there aren't any. I'm a pretty thorough researcher, but no one's perfect, and I might have missed an earlier reference. Surely if a chupacabra was widely known and discussed as far back as the 1950s, there should be plenty of written references in newspapers, magazines, books, folklore journals, etc., dating back decades. It seems there are none.

Then again, memory research has shown that the perception that something has been around for a long time influences our beliefs and recollections.

Experiments by researchers Kathryn Brown, Rhiannon Ellis, and Elizabeth Loftus, for example, shows how people can create false memories of experiencing things that never happened. In one experiment they found that by (falsely) telling people that they had experienced something in their youths, they came to believe it. In one study, after being prompted, adults specifically remembered meeting a Bugs Bunny character at Disney World, which could not have happened (Bugs is a Warner Bros. character). The same thing happened with Werther's Original caramels, which adults reminisced about enjoying as children in the 1950s and 1960s -- but could not have, since they were only created in 1969. (For more on this see Braun, K. A., Ellis, R., & Loftus, E.F. 2002. Make My Memory: How Advertising Can Change Our Memories of the Past, in Psychology and Marketing, 19(1): 1-23.)

As the authors write: “Remembering is often a social activity in which people come to some agreement about the past and it is much more likely to take place in the context of friends, family, or advertising than with psychotherapists. In some sense, life is a continual memory alteration experiment where memories continually are shaped by new incoming information.”

In this light it seems quite possible that people who are certain they grew up hearing tales of the bloodthirsty chupacabra beast may be merely incorrectly remembering the dates and details of when they first heard about it. The irony is, of course, that it was a Puerto Rican eyewitness’s faulty memory that confused a film monster with real life and essentially created the chupacabra.

Mass error, or incomplete research? Let’s find out! I'll offer a public $250 reward (plus a signed copy of my book Tracking the Chupacabra) for the first verifiable written evidence of a blood-sucking monster called the chupacabra (or chupacabras) that dates before 1990. It must be a published, dated reference; I can be contacted via Discovery News.

Let's see what turns up!
