Two-headed Conjoined Porpoises Hauled Up from the Deep

Two-headed conjoined porpoises were recently hauled up by a fishing boat in the North Sea, not far off the coast of the Netherlands.

The bizarre-looking creatures were already dead, and the fishermen, who feared trouble from the authorities, took photos and then tossed the duo back overboard.

It's not clear exactly why the porpoises died, but the double-headed creatures likely could not swim, said Erwin Kompanje, a researcher at the Natural History Museum and the Erasmus MC University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who recently wrote up the case in the June 7 issue of the journal Deinsea. Another cause may have been their fused hearts, which may not have worked adequately, Kompanje said. 

Conjoined twins
Conjoined twins are a rarity for humans, but they're also extremely rare for harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), Kompanje said. That's because newborn dolphins and porpoises, which are mammals, need to immediately start swimming on their own or they drown, Kompanje said.

"Normal twins are extremely rare in cetaceans, as there is not enough room in the mother's body to have more than one fetus," Kompanje told Live Science. One case report pegged the incidence of twinning in cetaceans at less than 1 in 200.

Only one past case of a harbor porpoise bearing twins has ever been reported. Given the rarity of twinning, it stands to reason that conjoined twins are even more of an oddity, he added. In the past, only nine other cases of conjoined twins have been reported in whales or dolphins, and most of these were described in fetuses pulled from dead pregnant females, according to the study.

North Sea cod back on the menu, marine body says

North Sea cod has been taken off the Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) list of fish to avoid eating.

The UK charity had previously said cod should not be eaten because stocks were only slightly above sustainable levels.

But it says it can now be eaten as an occasional treat following a recovery in numbers and having been removed from its red list of endangered fish.

Samuel Stone, from MCS, said the announcement was a "milestone", but fishing levels still needed to reduce.

The MCS said cod levels may never fully recover to their peak numbers of the 1970s and early 1980s.

There were now nine endangered stocks, which need "some of the attention that North Sea cod has had", it added.

The stealth tax that says to hell with North Sea cod stocks

Through the government body Seafish, the public is paying lobbyists to torpedo a campaign to protect the natural world

It's a stealth tax about which the government has kept very quiet. When you hear the details, you will know why. I doubt whether one in a thousand people is aware that it exists. Every time you buy fish in the UK, you pay a fee to support an organisation which opposes campaigns to protect fish stocks and marine ecosystems.

Seafish – its full name is the Seafish Industry Authority – says two things about itself: it "represents the UK seafood industry" and it's a "government body". You might wonder how it could be both, especially when it answers to a government that boasts about its free-market credentials. Why is an industry lobby group sponsored by the Westminster government (as well as the UK's three other national governments) and funded by a compulsory consumption tax?

Giant sunfish washed up on Overstrand beach in Norfolk


A giant fish rarely seen in the North Sea has washed up on a Norfolk beach.

The sunfish, which can grow to weigh up to 2,200 lbs (1,000kg) according to the British Marine Life Study Society, was found dead at Overstrand on Sunday morning.

The fish cannot easily tolerate water temperatures below 12C (54F) and the North Sea in winter is much colder.

It swims on its side on the surface to gain heat from the sun, which is how it got its English name.

The sunfish, genus Mola mola, from the Latin for millstone which it is said to resemble, thrives in tropical and semi-tropical water, the society said.

'Unusual sighting'
The giant fish's main diet is jellyfish and because of its low mass the sunfish needs to eat many, so it is seen in warmer waters.

They also prey on crustaceans and squid but humans are banned from eating sunfish under European rules because parts of their bodies are thought to contain toxins.

There are frequent sightings of the fish off the south west coast of Ireland and the west coast of Scotland where waters are warmed by the gulf stream but they are rarely seen in winter around the British Isles because the waters are cold.

Darkened Fjord Waters Mean Fewer Fish, More Jellyfish


ScienceDaily (Nov. 19, 2012) — The seawater in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and Norway's coastal waters and fjords is gradually getting darker. Researchers are observing signs similar to those from overproduction of organic compounds. The result may be fewer marine areas with fish, and more jellyfish.

Marine biologist Dag L. Aksnes of the University of Bergen has analysed the impacts of the declining optical conditions in Norwegian coastal waters. The process has likely been taking place over many decades, and there is strong evidence that changes in weather and climate are causing it to accelerate. And it could prove difficult to reverse.

Coloured matter from fresh water causing problems
Fresh water from rivers and lakes flows into the sea, mixing with coastal seawater. "This fresh water contains far more coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) than marine water, so our coastal waters are darkening," explains Professor Aksnes.

His research project receives some of its funding from the Research Council of Norway's research programme on the Oceans and Coastal Areas (HAVKYST).

Major differences between fjords
For many years, Professor Aksnes and his colleagues have been studying two fjords, Lurefjorden and Masfjorden, in northern Hordaland county on Norway's western coast. The fjords are similar and located close to each other, but with one important difference: Masfjorden contains far more seawater than Lurefjorden, which contains lower-salinity coastal water all the way down to its seabed. The study shows that while Masfjorden still has an ecosystem dominated by fish, its darker neighbouring fjord is heavily populated by the jellyfish Periphylla periphylla.

Shell Tries to Control North Sea Oil Leak

Oil is seeping into the North Sea after a platform flow line in the seabed sprung a leak, dumping several hundred barrels of oil into the water, according to the British subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell and a Scottish official.

The spill, announced by the company on Friday, is in the central North Sea area known as the Gannet field, about 112 miles east of Aberdeen, Scotland, and has resulted in a sheen of oil on the water’s surface about 20 miles long and 2.5 miles wide, the company said. As of Friday night “leakage of oil has been considerably reduced,” according to a press release posted on the Shell Web site. There was no indication that the leak had been fully stopped.

The company has been vague about the quantity of oil spilled as well as the cause of the rupture, but Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish regional government, said that around 110 tons of oil, the equivalent of about 750 barrels, had poured into the sea, according to Reuters. Shell did not respond to calls Saturday night.

In comparison, last year’s BP Deepwater Horizon disaster spewed nearly 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

“Our current expectation is it will be naturally dispersed through wave action and will not reach shore,” Shell said in the online statement.

The slick is moving west, though no word has been given about the state of the oil beneath the water’s surface. Shell deployed a remotely operated vehicle to monitor seepage into the seabed, the release said.

Shell announced the spill on Friday, but according to their press release the company had been trying to control the leak since at least Wednesday.

Environmental groups like Greenpeace want the company to disclose more information so that contingency and clean-up plans can be formulated, according to Reuters.

The North Sea was the site of a devastating oil disaster in 1988, when 167 workers on the Piper Alpha, a platform owned by Occidental Petroleum, were killed.

The Gannet field is operated by Shell U.K. Limited. The company also operates it on behalf of two other companies, Esso Exploration, of which Exxon Mobil is the parent company, and Production U.K. Limited, a subsidiary of the Nippon Oil Corporation.

'Balloon head' dolphin discovered (via Dawn Holloway)

A new type of dolphin with a short, spoon-shaped nose and high, bulbous forehead has been identified from a fossil found in the North Sea.


The Platalearostrum hoekmani was named after Albert Hoekman, the Dutch fisherman who in 2008 trawled up a bone from the creature's skull.

Up to six metres in length, the dolphin lived two to three million years ago.

The so-called rostrum bone and a model of the dolphin are on display at the Natural History Museum Rotterdam.

As museum researchers Klaas Post and Erwin Kompanje write in the museum's journal Deinsea, the North Sea has been a rich source of fossils in recent decades as bottom-trawling has become more prevalent.

The practice has yielded tens of thousands of pieces of the fossil record - many of which defy classification.

What is clear from the singular bone found by Mr Hoekman is that the animal from which it came fits neatly in the family of marine mammals known as Delphinids - the ocean-going dolphins that actually includes both killer and pilot whales.


More specific classification within this family is somewhat speculative.

The bone shows an unusually large tip region containing six teeth known as the premaxilla. This feature suggests the broad, blunt nature of the creature's snout.

Based on analyses of similar fossils and modern relatives within the family, the researchers are convinced they have found a new species whose closest living relative is the pilot whale.

The watery grave of Europe's monsters

Fossils dredged up from the North Sea are revealing the exotic creatures that roamed the continent thousands of years ago
A dozen white, plastic fish boxes stand jumbled on the floor of a former fish-gutting plant in the pretty town of Urk in the northern Netherlands. Each box overflows with what appear to be large, serrated pebbles or small serrated boulders. In fact, they are the fossilised teeth of mammoths. Some are as big as melons. Others are the size of cricket balls – the molars of baby mammoths, which died prematurely from hunger, or the claws and fangs of a predator, 40,000 years ago.


All around is a prehistoric boneyard. Propped against the walls are immense, curved mammoth tusks or mammoth thigh bones, five feet high. On the shelves are fragments of the jaw bone of a woolly rhinoceros and the skull and horns of a 10,000-year-old, extinct species of giant bison.
All have been scooped accidentally from the bed of the North Sea by Dutch beam trawlers in the last few months. Most are destined to be sold on to specialist sites on the internet.


They are just a fragment of an immense North Sea bone harvest – a "by-catch" of fossils. In the past 18 years, powerful Dutch beam trawlers and dredgers are estimated to have landed 200 tonnes of the fossilised remains of animals from a score of different species (and the remains and artefacts from human beings of two different species). In the past 40 years, it is estimated, Dutch trawlers have landed 15,000 mammoth teeth alone. This, in turn, is probably only a minuscule fraction of a treasure-trove of prehistory which lies still undiscovered under the grey waves between the coasts of England and the Netherlands.


The fact that the lower North Sea was once (until about 7,500 years ago) a land bridge between Britain and the continent is well enough known. What has only recently and gradually become accepted – by scientists who for many years ignored the evidence on their own watery doorsteps – is that the area now covered by the North Sea was not just a barren "land bridge". It was for tens of thousands of years a teeming plain of Ice Age wildlife, equivalent to the richest game reserves of Africa.


Dick Mol, a Dutch customs official and amateur palaeontologist who has become one of the greatest living experts on the "lost world" of the North Sea, calls it "a Serengeti with its coat on". The man who runs the fossil clearing station at Urk is Albert Hoekman, 44, a former fisherman who now works part-time as a collector and wholesaler of bones to the world fossil trade. Mr Hoekman is a key member of a network set up by Mr Mol and his friends. He visits fishing boats when they arrive in ports all over the Netherlands each Thursday and Friday morning and buys their by-catch of bones. He tries to ensure that historically or scientifically interesting fossils are set aside for examination by experts. The rest go for sale on the internet or directly to museums or collectors.


It is to this informal system that the scientific world owes many important North Sea discoveries. "I was a fisherman myself for 17 years," Mr Hoekman said. "There was a time not long ago when we fished up this stuff and we just threw it back in the sea. We had no idea what it was. OK, it was obviously something much larger than a drowned cow but that didn't interest us much."


The remains of mammoths, of three different species of woolly rhinos as well as hippos, lions, bears, wild horses, bison, elk, reindeer, hyenas, wolves and sabre tooth cats of at least two species have been trawled from the bottom of the North Sea in the past 140 years (but with increasing intensity in the past 20 years as bottom-scraping, beam trawlers have become more powerful).


A fossil leg bone brought up from the sea bottom by a Dutch beam trawler last year proved that a giant sabre-toothed cat, as heavy as a horse, lived on the "North Sea plain" around a million years ago – much further north than scientists had previously imagined.


The discovery of part of a Neanderthal skull by a Dutch shell dredger in 2001 – first publicised last month – suggested that our enigmatic, hirsute near-cousins were active on what is now the bed of the North Sea 60,000 years ago. Scores of artefact finds by Dutch boats suggest that the mysterious Mesolithic people, who lived between the two stone ages, had widespread settlements in the very middle of what is now the North Sea around 10,000 years ago.


This landscape – or the final version of a series of appearing and disappearing landscapes spread over more than 1.5 million years – was finally obliterated by global warming and the gradual melting of the last great ice sheet about 7,500 years ago.


A team of palaeontologists from Birmingham University – Vincent Gaffney, Simon Fitch and David Smith – has mapped a part of this vanished world, by computerising seismic survey data from the oil industry. In a book published last year, Europe's Lost World; the Rediscovery of Doggerland, they electronically pulled away the shrouds of sea-water and mud to trace the river valleys, giant lakes and the low hills of a "paradise lost" as large as the United Kingdom.


The Doggerland book is evidence of a growing scientific interest in the lost land below the North Sea. The interest has been awakened partly by the sheer volume, and the scientific importance, of fossil discoveries by trawlers in recent years but also by fears that man-made global warming could produce a renewed melting of the ice cap.


Stories of lost lands below the sea – from the Greek "Atlantis" to the Irish "Tir na n'Og" (land of eternal youth) – are part of human legend. Climate change, and the threat of the flooding of low-lying land, could also make them part of our future.


The renewed scientific interest has also brought accusations that the bed of the North Sea is being pillaged and that potentially important discoveries are being lost to science. Dutch trawlers, it is suggested by some archaeologists in Britain and France, are turning away from the unprofitable business of fishing for fish and have taken to fishing for bones. On the internet, the archaeologists point out, there are several US-based, fossil trading sites which are fed almost exclusively by trawler finds from the North Sea.


All of this amuses, and slightly angers, the team of self-taught, but expert Dutch palaeontologists, including Dick Mol, who have been trying for years to persuade the international, scientific community that the bed of the North Sea is a remarkable place. Far from being criticised, they say, the Dutch trawling industry should be praised for discovering, and for rescuing, so much. Are Dutch beam trawlers really going out looking for fossils to adorn New York or Los Angeles living rooms? "This is total bullshit," said Mr Mol. "It could not possibly be commercially viable for trawlers to do this."


Eighteen years ago, Mr Mol and a group of friends began to organise the Dutch fishing industry into a network of "accidental archaeologists". They gave the skippers of beam trawlers cash incentives to keep all the fossils that they found, however dull or ugly, and to keep detailed logs of where they found them.


Klaas Post, a fishing industry executive from Urk, is another member of Mr Mol's team. (It was Mr Post who was responsible for the first sabre-toothed cat find in 2000.) "It is ridiculous to say that Dutch trawlers are deliberately fishing for bones to sell," he said. "They would never find enough fossils to pay for their ship's fuel. There is, of course, a demand for North Sea fossils from collectors but it is not a limitless market. There are more than enough fossils coming from normal fishing to provide what the collectors want."


The only Dutch bone-fishing expeditions – 16 of them in the past eight years – have been organised for scientific purposes and paid for by Mr Mol, Mr Post and their friends or by documentary film companies. Since joining up with Mr Mol and Mr Post and their team, the former fisherman, Mr Hoekman has, himself, become a self-taught expert on Ice Age fossils. There is no real conflict between commerce and science, he says. The "phew-look-at-that" stuff that is in demand by fossil collectors – a mammoth tusk at €500 (£430) or a mammoth tooth at €60 – is usually of limited scientific interest.


Mr Hoekman admits that the system is not perfect. He hands on anything that is scientifically valuable – for instance, any bone with signs of human axe marks – to Mr Post and Mr Mol. But there are three or four other bone traders operating in Dutch fishing ports. Their interests are purely commercial. "There was one time when I saw a human skull on top of a pile of other fossils. Before I could do so, one of the other traders had bought it. We will now probably never know what it was."


British palaeontologists, including the authors of the Doggerland book, also complain that beam trawling is ravaging the bottom of the North Sea and making future scientific study of this Lost Word impossible. (Beam trawling involves dragging a heavy bar of metal along the sea floor to force flat fish, like sole, into the nets above).


"These complaints are based on ignorance of what the lower North Sea is like," said Mr Post. "There are so many currents down there and the sea is so shallow that every big storm churns up the mud on the sea bottom. This explains why we keep finding so many fossils. New ones are being forced up through the mud to the sea floor by storms all the time."


Nonetheless, beam trawling is due to be banned by the European Union in the next three or four years because, it is claimed, it damages the marine environment and uses up too much fuel. A form of "electronic" trawling", using a virtual "beam" to scare plaice and sole into the nets, is being developed.


What will this mean for the North Sea bone, or giant fossil, harvest? "No more bones. It is all coming to an end. That means no more fossil trade but also no more scientifically important finds. A pity," Mr Post, said shrugging his shoulders.


Mr Mol is not ready to give up just yet. "I am hoping that the Dutch government will keep a couple of beam trawlers for scientific or archaeological purposes," he said. "If not, I am looking into the possibility of buying one myself. How many fossils are there still down there? I would say millions."

Dolphin 'super pod' seen in firth

Hundreds of dolphins more commonly found in warmer seas have been seen in the Moray Firth while making a "massive migration" into the North Sea.

The environmental charity Earthwatch Institute said more than 400 short-beaked common dolphins were sighted off the north east coast.
It said the "super pod" was a sign of how climate change was pushing some wildlife further north.

The firth is famous for its bottlenose dolphins.

An Earthwatch team headed by Dr Kevin Robinson, director and co-founder of the Cetacean Research and Rescue Unit (CRRU), saw the pod 10 miles off land.
He said the dolphins' appearance in the firth was hugely significant.

Dr Robinson said: "Firstly, the sheer number of dolphins was astounding - there were common dolphin everywhere around us over a two-mile radius.

"Furthermore, this was only the second sighting in the past few years of such a 'super-pod' of this species in these waters. The first sighting in 10 years was recorded here in July 2007 when we were joined by more than 300 animals in the outer Moray Firth.

"Since then we have not seen them, although smaller groups have been identified by co-workers from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society on opportunistic boat surveys."

He said "super pods" were known to exist in other parts of the UK. There have been sightings in the Western Isles, but few in the firth.

The scientist added: "This is further scientific evidence that populations of dolphins are moving further north because of climate change."

'Wall-to-wall'
Christina Gore, a 61-year-old Earthwatch volunteer who was also on the boat trip, said the water was "boiling with animals".

She said: "It was incredibly exciting. They were swimming under the boat and leaping alongside us. There were older animals doing back-flips, and there were even newborn calves swimming along with the group."

Charlie Phillips, of the WDCS, said common dolphins could be seen in the Inner Moray Firth where the stretch of water narrows in the summer.

He said the numbers in the group seen by Dr Robinson off Fraserburgh were amazing.

Mr Phillips said: "To see wall-to-wall dolphins is something to behold."

Large sand eel and mackerel shoals off the Caithness coast may see the "super pod" move into the Pentland Firth, he added.
