Himalayan butterfly found in Fujairah - via Mark Raines

Another new butterfly species has been added to the UAE list by locally-based naturalist Binish Roobas – this time a Himalayan species, the Indian Fritillary (Argynnis hyperbius). It was found in the wild in Wadi Wurayah National Park, WWNP, in Fujairah earlier this month.

This latest discovery brings the UAE butterfly total to 58 species. The record may also be a first for Arabia.

The Indian Fritillary is common in the Himalayan regions of Northern India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nepal, and it has also been found in southern Iran. Now a small number have made their way to Wadi Wurayah, where Roobas was able to photograph both a male and female of the species.

The butterfly was discovered during a visit to update earlier surveys of plant and insect diversity in Wadi Wurayah, following the exceptional fall and winter rains. Joining Roobas in the field were Gary Feulner, Chairman of the Dubai Natural History Group, Sami Ullah Majeed, WWNP Park Ranger, and Nuri Asmita, a WWNP biologist.

The new species is an opportunistic migrant that probably arrived to take advantage of the favourable conditions created by abundant rainfall from October until January. It is unlikely that they will remain for the UAE summer.

Sea snakes of the Gulf are focus of new research - via Herp Digest

For many UAE residents, the only time they hear about sea snakes is when occasional warnings are made to beachgoers to steer clear of the creatures if they are found on the sand.

Although they are sometimes found washed up on beaches – they have difficulty moving on land, so can appear to be dead when they are alive – and are occasionally spotted in the water, sightings are not common for most of us.
                       
Similarly, sea snakes in the Gulf have tended not to attract the attention of scientists.

Much of what is known about them is locally based on research from the first half of the 20th century. Such studies indicated that there were nine species of the subfamily Hydrophiinae, which includes sea snakes, in Gulf waters.

But researchers have now comprehensively updated their knowledge of local sea snakes by carrying out a detailed survey of their distribution in Gulf waters, work that has been published in the journal ZooKeys.
                       
The study mostly looked at sea snakes found in fishing nets in Iranian waters as "bycatch", meaning they were not the vessels’ target species.

One of the researchers carrying out the fieldwork, and the senior author of the recent paper, was Mohsen Rezaie-Atagholipour, of the environmental management office of Qeshm Free Area Organisation.

During 2013 and 2014 he and his colleagues spent time on trawlers at several locations in Iranian waters, including in the Gulf of Oman, collecting sea snakes that had been caught in the nets. Fieldwork was also carried out in mangrove swamps.
                       
In the two years that followed, the scientists, helped by a French-based researcher, Dr Nicolas Vidal, carried out a detailed analysis of the specimens to identify which species they came from.

They found that there were 10 species present from the Hydrophiinae family, which includes sea snakes. One of them, Microcephalophis cantoris, which was found in the Gulf of Oman, had not been definitively recorded in the area by scientists.
                       
Until this study, the nearest confirmed findings of M cantoris had been made off Pakistan.

"It’s the first time it’s been found in this area and its range is extended for more than 400km," says Dr Vidal.

This species is, says Mr Rezaie-Atagholipour, very rare in the area, which could account for no previous scientific study having definitively identified it in the region.

"We reviewed all assessable literature but, except our record, there is no historical confirmed record of the species in both gulfs," says Mr Rezaie-Atagholipour.
                       
"It, however, seems likely that the species is not abundant even in other parts of its geographical distribution range as we have few information about this species.”

As the scientists note in their paper, sea snakes of the Hydrophiinae family have a common ancestor dating back about 6 million years, although it is in the last 3.5 million years that most of the types that now exist evolved.

There are more than 60 species of hydrophiines in total, with the creatures being found off the east coast of Africa, off South Asia and around Australia and many other parts of Asia-Pacific. They evolved from Australia’s highly venomous land snakes, which helps to explain why they are venomous.
                       
Typically growing 120 to 150 centimetres long, sea snakes have much reduced scales on their underside, meaning they are largely helpless on land. They have shorter tongues than land snakes, because detecting scents is easier in the water than on land. They have valves over their nostrils to keep out water and, as well as breathing through these nostrils, they can also exchange gases through their skin.
                       
Catching prey is largely done through detecting vibrations or sounds and through smell; vision is less important.

They mostly eat fish and other sea life, such as crustaceans. Fortunately, they are not a major danger to people as they tend not to attack unless provoked and even when they do bite people, in most cases no venom is released.

The fact that sea snakes are often found in nets as bycatch raises the question of whether human activity is affecting their numbers. All species found locally, except M cantoris, are classified as "least concern" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
                       
But there could still be issues over abundance locally, says Mr Rezaie-Atagholipour, because the union classification is based on the species’ abundance across its geographical range.

It does not mean that numbers in a specific habitat, such as the Gulf, are not falling.

He indicated that bycatch is probably the greatest anthropogenic threat to sea snakes in the area.

"Some people may think that fishing nets are not a threat for sea snakes because the body diameter of these tube-like creatures is smaller than the mesh size of most fishing nets. This is absolutely wrong," Mr Rezaie-Atagholipour says.
                       
"Sea snakes can easily become entangled in fishing nets due to their long body. Most sea snakes I’ve collected from fishing nets were dead or badly injured, mostly because of pressure by other bycatch or drowning."

Sea snakes found locally are noteworthy, Mr Rezaie-Atagholipour says, because they had adapted to live in the harsh Gulf environment, where temperatures are high, there is little rainfall and the water is highly saline.
                       
"Therefore, sea snake populations in the Gulf are important if we want to know what will be the effects of climate change and global warming on these highly venomous marine reptiles," he says.

"Nonetheless, our information about the biology and conservation status of sea snakes living in the Gulf is scarce. Unlike the Western Indo-Pacific region, known as a biodiversity hotspot for sea snakes, they are not diverse nor abundant in the Gulf.
                       
"I always ask myself, do we have enough information about sea snakes living in the Gulf to know if we are losing them in our area? I feel disappointed when I see the answer is still ‘no’.”

A little more should be known about sea snakes locally when the scientists publish a further study that will look in more detail at the morphology (structure and appearance) and the genetics of the creatures. Fascinating but not well studied, the Gulf’s sea snakes should be yielding up a few more secrets in the years to come.

Dubai next to destroy its ivory

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced that by the end of this month it will destroy its 6 tonnes of seized ivory. The ivory will be crushed and then mixed with sludge to make it unusable.

The UAE becomes the latest in a growing list of countries that is are making a public stand against the killing of elephant. With an elephant being killed every 15 minutes the future of the species is at risk.

The announcement was made by Aisha Al Muhairi, head of the Dubai’s marine, environment and wildlife section. The ivory that is set to be crushed consists of ivory seized by the municipality of Dubai over recent years. It will be the first large scale destruction of ivory in the Middle East.

“This will be a major national event, not just for Dubai but for the UAE. We, the municipality and the ministry, are partners. It’ll be a first of its kind event in the Middle East,” Aisha Al Muhairi said.

She also said that an education and public awareness campaign will run in tandem with the public destruction of the ivory.

New discovery amid UAE's dying ecosystem

As urbanisation consumes wildlife habitats in the UAE, one scientist has rediscovered a dragonfly thought to be extinct.

Fujairah, United Arab Emirates - Dr Jacky Judas paused over a photograph from the field. The dragonfly captured by his camera was different than any other he had seen before. It was red-bodied, with a distinctive pattern of cross-veins on its lower wings.

Carefully, working from home, he checked the specimen against all known species in the region. But it was nowhere to be found. He dispatched the photo to an expert in Europe, a dragonfly specialist at the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The expert tested the image across a larger database, and it did not take long for Judas to get an answer.

The dragonfly was a species that had not been seen since 1957. It was considered extinct, and was never known to have even inhabited the area where Judas found it. "You always hope to make new discoveries … but this wasn’t expected," he says.

Judas works in the United Arab Emirates, a wealthy but geographically-small desert federation. Known best as a desert oasis of opulence, the UAE is not a country often associated with wildlife and biodiversity. But beyond the concrete jungle, rare animal and plant species are seeking refuge from rapidly deteriorating habitats.

"In Dubai, of course, there are so many people who don’t even know that there are mountains in the country. You show them a picture and they say, ‘Oh, where’s that!’" says Gary Feulner, chairman of the Dubai Natural History Group.

At one point in time, the UAE was unique in the world for its easily accessible deep desert, mangrove swamps and mountain ravines, with roads winding slowly through nature, he says. Today, in their place, are endless fences and highways. Thirty years ago, the 16 ravines, or wadis, were said to have contained large reserves of freshwater, but the land has continued to dry up and entire freshwater ecosystems have collapsed. Elsewhere, urban development has caused extensive damage.

Pets and apartments don't mix in UAE's Ajman


AJMAN, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Apartment dwellers in a part of the United Arab Emirates have received blanket eviction notices — for their pets.

Officials in Ajman, an emirate north of Dubai, have banned pets such as dogs and cats from apartments and put a two-dog limit for single-family houses. Abu Dhabi's The National newspaper on Monday quotes top Ajman official Sheik Rashid Humaid Al Nuaimi as saying the new rule will be phased in, starting now, for health and sanitary reasons.

The report says pets will be only allowed in single-family homes with outdoor space.

Pet ownership is not part of traditional Emirati culture, but the UAE has millions of expatriate residents who have dogs, cats and other pets.

Ajman is one of seven semi-autonomous emirates, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, in the UAE.

New shark species found in RAK

DUBAI // A marine biologist hopes she may soon be lending her name to a new species of shark she discovered in UAE waters.



Rima Jabado, who for the past two years has been cataloguing shark species in the Emirates' waters, recently found the fish at a landing site in Ras Al Khaimah.
She said her curiosity was sparked by subtle differences in the teeth and the shape of the sharks' mouths.
"They are smaller sharks, similar to the milk sharks," Ms Jabado said. "They don't grow very big. I found very few of them but they just looked slightly different."
She has been conducting her own genetic analysis of the sharks, which are less than 70 centimetres long, and has sent pictures to various taxonomists around the world.
Ms Jabado, a Lebanese-born Canadian, said she could only be sure one of the two shark species she found was entirely new to science, but verification would have to be done by taxonomists around the world.
"I'm not the one to confirm this," she said. "It needs to go to specialist taxonomists around the world and we need to do genetic work before we can confirm it. It can take sometimes two to three years to describe a new species."

Dugongs facing multiple threats, warns EAD

ABU DHABI - The dugong (also known as Sea Cow) population in the UAE waters, the world’s second largest home for the marine mammal, is facing multiple threats, the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) warned on Thursday.

“The endangered dugong species is currently facing a number of threats due to habitat loss and human-related activities such as increased marine activity, being caught in discarded fishing nets, impact with boats, marine pollution, as well as a decline of its critical natural habitat — underwater sea grass beds,” Thabit Al Abdessalaam, Director of Biodiversity Management Sector at EAD. According to the agency, the world’s second largest population of dugongs is in the UAE waters, and the importance of protecting this unique species is being highlighted in the fifth episode of ‘The Environment Show with Ask Ali’ series. This episode on the dugong is being screened at the Eco-Cinema at the ‘Bu Tinah Experience’ until November 10.
There are only 95,000 to 100,000 dugongs left in the world. Australia has 85,000, the Arabian Gulf and Red Sea bordering countries have approximately 7,300, while the remainder are located in the other range states.
“The protection of Bu Tinah Island and other dugong habitats continues to be a priority for Abu Dhabi. As our country continues to grow and develop, we must ensure that all our biodiversity and natural resources are conserved effectively,” said Al Abdessalaam.
In this episode of the documentary, viewers get a closer look at the dugong and learn why it has been classified as being ‘vulnerable to extinction’ under the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) 2009 Red List of Threatened Species.
This index indicates how such animals face a high risk of extinction in the wild. During the programme, Ali meets with experts from the EAD who explain the threats facing the species, the importance of its existence to the future sustainability of the UAE’s biodiversity and how Bu Tinah has increasingly become a safe haven for this migratory sea mammal.
The EAD’s Dugong Conservation Programme studies the dugongs’ ecology, movement and migration patterns. The data collected over the past 10 years has enabled the EAD to better understand the health of the environment and how it should be managed to ensure long-term sustainability.
It has also helped the EAD to understand dugong behaviour and contribute to the establishment of the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve.
“We are focused on ensuring that Abu Dhabi’s waters are managed in a manner which helps this globally endangered species. These efforts have enabled us to maintain the species’ population by ensuring the integrity of its key habitats and marine ecosystems,” said Abdessalaam.

25 new species discovered in UAE's Wadi Wurayah

Wadi Wurayah teems with life with discovery of 55 new species
September 2011: Wadi Wurayah continues to be a stronghold for wildlife in the United Arab Emirates with the discovery of 55 new species, including a shiny golden bug called Sphenoptera vanharteni, and a long-legged elegant ant: Lepisiota elegantissima, in addition to a tiny gecko: Asaccus gallagheri.

Out of the 55 newly recorded species recently found, 25 are considered new to science species, further highlighting the importance of this protected area. These new species found in Wadi Wurayah are composed of two species of Arachnida (spiders, scorpions, ticks), one species of terrestrial Crustacean (crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill and barnacles), one species of Entognatha (springtails), and 51 species of insects (bugs, flies, ants, butterflies, etc).

The findings are a result of continued research, collaboration and verification by Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF), Fujairah Municipality and local authorities.

Tiny geckos feed on insects they catch in the darkChristophe Tourenq, senior conservation manager of EWS-WWF, said: ‘These discoveries highlight the importance of conserving the habitats of the UAE.

The protection of the many unique life forms that reside in our natural environment is interconnected with and interdependent on the protection of these habitats. The sustainability of our lifestyle is also dependent on the health of our natural environment and the resources it provides.'

He added: ‘It is vital that we all do our part towards the conservation of our natural heritage. EWS-WWF calls on all UAE residents to work together and act responsibly to help support the on-going protection of the countries habitats from degradation and loss.'

Another Wadi Wurayah species was discovered by two reptiles and amphibian specialists; researcher Theodore J. Papenfuss from University of Berkley, California, and his assistant, Todd Pierson. They spotted a tiny gecko on the gravel bed of the wadi: the Gallagher's leaf-toed gecko (Asaccus gallagheri). Males of this elegant minuscule gecko of less than 7cm show a beautifully coloured yellow tail and feed on the insects they chase in the dark, thanks to their night-vision. The Gallagher's leaf-toed gecko was first described in Masafi, UAE in 1972 and is only found in the UAE and northern Oman.

In October 2010, Wadi Wurayah officially joined the list of 1,932 wetlands around the world which are of international importance for biodiversity conservation under the Ramsar Convention. Due to its habitat diversity and the presence of permanent water, Wadi Wurayah is considered a stronghold for the wildlife in UAE.

First wild born cheetah for 40 years in Arabia

April 2010. The last known Arabian cheetah was shot in Saudi Arabia in 1950, though they may have hung on in Oman until around 1970. Now 4 cubs have been born in the wild in a nature reserve on an island off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. Wildlife Extra believes that this is also the first time that cheetah have successfully been reintroduced into the wild anywhere in the world.


The cheetahs on Sir Bani Yas Island are from captive bred populations. The mother and father of the cubs, Safira and Gabriel were raised in Dubai's Wildlife Centre and the Sharjah Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife. The cheetahs were brought to the island as part of conservation efforts which include breeding, re-wilding, releasing into the Arabian Wildlife Park to become an integral part of the natural population control for hoofed species on the island.

The Sir Bani Yas Island conservation team spends a great deal of time and effort into putting animals that are brought to the island from captive populations through a re-wilding programme and ensuring that the animals are trained to hunt and be self-sufficient before they are released into the Arabian Wildlife Park. Once they are released, the conservation team is removed completely from the animals' day-to-day activities, and the cheetahs, Safira and Gabriel, are a telling example of what can be achieved through re-wilding as they hunt and fend for themselves without human interference.

Low survival rate
Survival rates for cheetah cubs are very low both in the wild and captivity, and according to the conservation team, Safira, the cubs' mother, is doing an impressive job of taking care of her cubs, even though she was raised by humans. She has not yet moved the cubs from their original birth place in a small cave in the mountains. Safira is fitted with a radio collar and can be tracked and monitored by the conservation team on the island.

Arabian Oryx

The flagship specie on Sir Bani Yas is the Arabian Oryx that was introduced in 1971 and was an unprecedented success, as the animal was declared extinct in the wild by 1972. Now, there are around 400 Arabian Oryx on Sir Bani Yas Island roaming freely in the park.

However Wildlife Extra is distressed to find a website based in Abu Dhabi offering cheetah and ocelot kittens for sale. We stress that this is nothing to do with the Arabian Wildlife Park, but it does show that the authorities in Abu Dhabi have a a little way to go to to fully protect cheetah in Abu Dhabi. There can be no conservation while there is a commercial trade in such a rare species.
