Tasmanian devils 'adapting to coexist with cancer'

There's fresh hope for the survival of endangered Tasmanian devils after large numbers were killed off by facial tumours.
The world's largest carnivorous marsupials have been battling Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) for over 20 years.
But researchers have found the animals' immune system to be modifying to combat the assault.
And according to an international team of scientists from Australia, UK, US and France, the future for the devils is now looking brighter.
"In the past, we were managing devil populations to avoid extinction. Now, we are progressively moving to an adaptive management strategy, enhancing those selective adaptations for the evolution of devil/DFTD coexistence," explains Dr Rodrigo Hamede, from the University of Tasmania.
First discovered in north-eastern Tasmania in 1996, the disease has since spread across 95% of the species' range, with local population losses of over 90%.
Dr Hamede's team has been collecting epidemiological evidence over the past 10 years. The group has plotted scenarios based on current infection rates in the wild, and in their forecast for the next 100 years, 57% of scenarios see DFTD fading out and 22% predict coexistence.

Tasmanian devil DNA shows signs of cancer fightback

A genetic study of Tasmanian devils has uncovered signs that the animals are rapidly evolving to defend themselves against an infectious face cancer.

One of just three known transmissible cancers, this tumour has wiped out 80% of wild devils in the past 20 years.

Researchers looked at samples from 294 animals, in three different areas, before and after the disease arrived.

Two small sections of the devil genome appear to be changing very fast - and contain likely cancer-fighting genes.

The team, made up of US, UK and Australian scientists, described their findings in the journal Nature Communications.

They say the results offer much-needed hope that the species, which is unique to Tasmania, could survive the disease.

Devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) was discovered in 1996 and kills nearly every devil it infects. Essentially a single tumour that jumps between hosts, it is transferred when the aggressive beasts bite each other's snouts.

Only two other infectious cancers are known to science. A similar tumour is shared between the genitals of dogs when they mate, and has traversed the globe since it originated 11,000 years ago; another was discovered in 2015 affecting clams on the US west coast.

Hyena Meets Tasmanian Devil: Ancient 'Hypercarnivore' Unearthed

A newfound extinct marsupial "hypercarnivore" from Australia — one that researchers say looked like a cross between a Tasmanian devil and a hyena — was about twice as big as Australia's largest living flesh-eating marsupials, a new study finds.

Named Whollydooleya tomnpatrichorum, the predator is just one of a bevy of what scientists said were "strange, new animals"found in a fossil-rich site Down Under.

Although scientists have so far discovered only a single lower molar tooth of this predator, they deduced from the animal's tooth that "almost certainly it was a very active predator with an extremely powerful bite," said study lead author Mike Archer, a paleontologist at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Judging from the size and shape of this fossil molar, the researchers suggest W. tomnpatrichorum was what scientists call a hypercarnivore. This term "generally refers to a predator that is larger than a cat whose diet is at least 75 percent meat," Archer told Live Science. "These are animals that specialize in killing and eating other animals, although they probably wouldn't pass up a juicy bit of fruit from time to time."

The scientists estimated that this hypercarnivore weighed at least 44 to 55 lbs. (20 to 25 kilograms). In comparison, Australia's largest living carnivorous marsupial, the Tasmanian devil, weighs only about 22 lbs. (10 kg).

Tasmanian Devils' Mysterious Cancer May Come in Two Varieties

The Tasmanian devil has long been known to suffer from an unusual type of cancer that can spread from animal to animal, but now researchers say the endangered species is plagued by at least two kinds of infectious cancer.

The finding suggests that Tasmanian devils are especially prone to the emergence of contagious tumors, and that transmissible cancers may arise more frequently in nature than previously thought, scientists added.

Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii) are marsupials, like kangaroos and opossums; females have pouches to carry and suckle newborns. The furry, dog-size mammals are found only on the island of Tasmania, which sits about 150 miles (240 kilometers) south of Australia. Fossil evidence suggests that Tasmanian devils were once spread across the Australian mainland, but disappeared from the area about 400 years ago.

The largest group so far of disease-free Tasmanian devils has been released in the wild, as part of plans to save the carnivorous marsupials from a cancer threatening them with extinction.

A group of 22 of the creatures, made famous by their namesake Warner Bros cartoon character, was flown to the island state of Tasmania from a captive breeding facility near Sydney and released in native bushland.

The Tasmanian devil population has plummeted to around 10,000 from an estimated 250,000 before 1996, when Devil Facial Tumor Disease was first discovered. The disease causes large lumps to form around the animal's mouth and head, making it hard for it to eat.

"Tasmanian Devils in the wild have been absolutely decimated by this disease," Mike Drinkwater, operations manager at the Devil Ark recovery programme told Reuters. "It's a very, very nasty disease. After three months we see symptoms, after six months those devils are gone."

Every state and territory of Australia except Tasmania has an animal emblem. New South Wales has the platypus, Queensland the koala and Victoria the possum.

When it comes to animal emblems, every state and territory has one exceptTasmania. So the people of the island state have been asked to have their say: should the Tasmanian devil receive the honour?

The state’s environment minister, Matthew Groom, thinks the carnivorous marsupial fits the bill. “We believe it can only be a positive for Tasmania’s brand to be officially associated with this unique creature which is recognised around the world,” he said.

Promoting the species is expected to raise awareness and assistance for a debilitating facial tumour which has hit devil numbers over the past decade.

On Monday this week The Conversation published a story under the headline “What’s killing Tassie devils if it isn’t contagious cancer?” The article suggested evidence that the Tasmanian devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) is a transmissible cancer is inconclusive and instead, environmental chemicals could be to blame. This misrepresents the state of the science.

All the latest research points to the fact that the deadly DFTD is a transmissible cancer that originated in a female Tasmanian devil. A single cell in this devil (patient zero) developed into a cancer cell.

Tasmanian devil killed at US zoo had skull crushed by asphalt block

A Tasmanian devil at a US zoo has had its skull crushed by a block of asphalt and police are trying to determine whether a zoo employee or a member of the public was responsible.

Jasper was one of four Tasmanian devils shipped from Australia to the Albuquerque Bio Park Zoo in New Mexico last December.

It appeared he did not die instantly, with evidence from an examination by the zoo’s head veterinarian Ralph Zimmerman suggesting the injured devil crawled to a log in the enclosure before dying.

“The first suspicion of how the devil died was that it was possibly killed by another devil,” the police report states.

Last disease-free Tasmanian devils imperiled by mine

The federal environment minister, Mark Butler, has given the go-ahead to a controversial mine that the courts halted amid concerns it could drastically affect the last stronghold of the Tasmanian devil.

Butler said he had granted approval to Shree Minerals to proceed with its iron ore mine at Nelson Bay River in the north-west of Tasmania, subject to 30 conditions.

However, the Save the Tarkine campaign group, which successfully convinced the federal court to block the mine two weeks ago, said it would launch a further legal challenge, claiming that Butler had not taken the time to make a full assessment of the mine's impact.

The federal court had ruled that Tony Burke, the previous environment minister, had erred by failing to properly consult departmental advice relating to the mine's adverse implications for the Tasmanian devil.

Around 80% of the Tasmanian devil population has been ravaged by a facial tumor disease, with the last remaining tumor-free population found in the Tarkine, where the mine is to be located.

Conditions placed on the mine by Butler include a ban on travel to and from the site outside daylight hours to reduce the chance of devils being run over by trucks. Shree employees will also have to get to the mine via a bus, rather than travel there in their own cars.

Endangered devils breeding on Maria Island

A plan to establish a wild population of Tasmanian devils free of the deadly facial tumour disease is showing signs of success. 

After just five months on Maria Island, off Tasmania's East Coast, the devils have successfully bred, doubling their numbers. 

The Save the Tasmanian devil Program released a total of 15 devils last year. 

Wildlife biologist Phil Wise says one of them, a four year old devil known as Jimmy, grew up in captivity and has relaxed into his new home. 

"It's a really nice part of bringing them back into the wild is they seemed to have calmed down and relaxed so that makes it easy for us," he said. 

As the deadly facial tumour disease continues to wipe out the species on mainland Tasmania the island population has been established along with a number of sanctuaries interstate. 

Mr Wise says the value of the insurance population cannot be underestimated. 

"If the disease does go the way of causing extinction on the mainland of Tasmania then knowing there's a wild population here that's disease free will be something to look back on and be very proud of," said Mr Wise. 

A team of biologists has been trapping and checking the health of the released devils. 

They have found that the animals have established dens and are breeding. 

So far they have counted 15 pouch young. 

The Director of the Save the Tasmanian devil Program, Howel Williams, says it is a sign that the population is thriving. 

"I think this points to the fact that they're really settled in very well and have felt good enough about it that they've been able to reproduce successfully," he said. 

While the devils are reproducing there has been one death. 

A devil was found dead in a collapsed wombat burrow earlier this year. 

Mr Wise says it is part of life in a wild situation where the carnivores have a 60 per cent mortality rate.

Tasmanian Devil Cancer Traced Back to 'Immortal' Devil Girl

About 20 years ago, a female Tasmanian devil living in northeast Tasmania developed a facial tumor. When she eventually died, she left some of her cancer cells behind. Her tumor lived on to kill another day, and has been sweeping through the endangered Tasmanian devil population ever since.

The "immortal devil girl" was identified in a new study in which researchers sequenced the genetic blueprint, or genomes, of the Tasmanian devil's cancerous facial tumors.

"It’s a very bizarre cancer; it's spread by living cancer cells," study researcher Elizabeth Murchison, working with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the United Kingdom, told LiveScience. "The contagious cancer has arisen from the cells of a single girl devil that lived quite some time ago. We don't have genetic material from that devil, because it lived and died in the wild and was probably never seen by a person."

SYDNEY // With a spine-chilling scream that terrified Australia’s early European settlers, the carnivorous Tasmanian devil has a fearsome reputation. But in recent years it has been humans, in the form of scientists, who have been trying to save the animals from extinction.

An aggressive cancer is slowly wiping out the species, with its population falling by 60 per cent in the past decade.

Last week scientists said they had made a breakthrough in the fight to save the animals by mapping its genome for the first time. There is hope that charting the devils’ full DNA sequence will open new paths to understanding and combating the mysterious cancer that causes disfiguring facial tumours.

“This sequence is invaluable and comes at a crucial time,”said the lead researcher Elizabeth Murchison. “By comparing our draft sequence with samples taken from many hundreds of devils suffering from this cancer, we can begin to look at the spread of the disease.”

Ms Murchison, from the Australian National University, said the information would allow scientists to identify which mutations had actually caused the devils’ cancer “and perhaps allow us to target those mutant genes with particular drugs”.

The breakthrough comes after researchers suffered a setback last month when a Tasmanian devil that showed rare signs of resistance to the cancer died.

For several years the animal, named Cedric, was a beacon of hope for researchers after showing signs of immunity to the tumours.

The unique marsupials exist in the wild only in Tasmania, Australia’s rugged southern island state, where they are listed as endangered. The size of a small dog, the stocky, dark-furred marsupials have powerful jaws and a scream that led to their demonic name.

For scientists working to unlock the secrets of the virus that threatens to render devils extinct within 25 years, the untimely death of Cedric was a blow.

“He had genetic differences that we thought might lead us to find a solution to the facial tumour disease,” said Dr Barrie Wells, a veterinarian and animal welfare officer at the University of Tasmania. “It looked like Cedric might have special properties. He was a valuable animal and he did resist this disease in a way that other devils did not.”

Cedric was born in captivity and spent his whole life in research facilities, where over six years he was subjected to various tests and injected with malignant cells. He was euthanised by Dr Wells’s team at the end of August after finally succumbing to cancer.

“His death has set us back because when we thought we were close to an answer, we were not,” Dr Wells said.

The highly contagious cancer, which first emerged in the mid- 1990s and has never been seen in nature before, is transmitted between animals during rowdy communal squabbles over food or aggressive mating rituals. The search for a cure has been hampered by the contagion’s ability to mutate into several different strains.

While science struggles to find an effective treatment, breeding centres have been set up across the Australian mainland to establish “insurance” populations of healthy devils. Sydney’s Taronga Zoo is home to a small group of six adults and four juveniles, which could hold the key to the long-term survival of a species in peril.

“They have big personalities. They are very outgoing and get up to a lot of mischief,” explains Lisa Cavanagh, a keeper at the zoo, as two energetic juveniles tear into an early-morning meal of raw rabbit meat, emitting the occasional growl and squeal, while their father soaks up the sun in a nearby enclosure.

Bunyip, aged 18 months, and Devitt are unlikely to ever be released into the wild and are part of a 50-year “Noah’s ark” project to protect vulnerable captive specimens from the seemingly unstoppable sickness.

“It is an amazing disease when you see what it can do to an animal. It affects their mouth and their eyes. It is an open wound once it gets to the final stages. They live with it for about three to six months. They die not only from the cancer but from starvation. It is just the most devastating disease,” Ms Cavanagh said.

The image of the endangered Tasmanian devil has been given a makeover at a new exhibition at Taronga Zoo to raise awareness of the plight of a flesh-eating marsupial that has a fearsome reputation.

Portrayed as crazed by the Warner Brothers cartoon character Taz, the animal has never attracted the sort of public sympathy afforded to Australia’s koalas or kangaroos.

The idea is that if visitors to the zoo see how endearing and unassuming the devil usually is, they will be encouraged to support breeding programmes.

“They’ve got massive teeth and can open their mouths very wide and if there’s a bit of sun behind them their ears actually appear to glow red because of how thin the skin is, so there are a few things that do fit the name.

“However, their behaviour doesn’t quite match it,” said Nick de Vos, manager of the devil breeding programme at Taronga Zoo. “They are actually quite shy and retiring.”

Kerry Addison, a tourist from Melbourne, and her 10-year-old daughter, Rosemary, were among those happy to see one of Australia’s most distinctive mammals at such close quarters.

“They are so cute. I want one,” enthused Rosemary, while her mother said: “I think preserving as many animals as we can is important. Using the zoo to tell children about how to look after animals is a great thing. They look sweet but because they are called devils you might think they are an aggressive animal but they are obviously not and bound around quite happily.”

Devils set for extinction?

A TASMANIAN devil expert fears the species will become extinct in the wild despite multi-million-dollar efforts to save it from disease.


Save the Tasmanian Devil program senior keeper Jocelyn Hockley says work to establish a captive insurance population will stop the species suffering the same fate as the Tasmanian tiger.

"An amazing amount of work has been done, but I am not sure if there is any more that can be done," Dr Hockley said as Tasmania marked Threatened Species Day.

"The devil facial tumour disease is moving and changing and the species' survival depends on how the disease evolves as it moves west."

Five Tasmanian scientists are lobbying the State and Federal Governments to protect more forest from logging to give the state's remaining healthy Tasmanian devils a fighting chance to survive.

Tasmanian Devils’ Cancer Tackled Through Social Networks Study

Aug. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Tasmanian devils, fighting a deadly facial cancer that threatens to wipe out the species, could be saved by radio collars and an analysis of their social network.

A study of 27 of the usually solitary carnivores in Tasmania’s Narawntapu National Park showed all were connected to each other directly or through other individuals, with one male holding a central role within the network, according to a study that appeared today in the Ecology Letters journal.

The Tasmanian marsupial’s population fell by 60 percent in a decade from a fatal cancer called Devil Infectious Tumor Disease, the International Union for Conservation of Nature said. The Swiss-based group last year listed the devil as “endangered,” the second-highest degree of extinction threat.

“Understanding networks of contacts is crucial because it is usually the case that a small number of highly connected individuals, or ‘super spreaders,’ are responsible for the majority of disease transmission,” said Rodrigo Hamede, the paper’s lead author and a zoologist at the University of Tasmania. “Once these individuals are identified, actions such as targeted treatment or culling may control the disease.”

The facial cancer is spread through biting, and previous studies revealed transmission is more common during the February-March mating season, the paper said. Because mating occurs in underground burrows, past observations have been “sparse,” Hamede’s team said.

Devil Interactions

The researchers fitted 23 female devils and 23 males with radio collars that logged “contact” when they came within 30 centimeters (12 inches) of another tagged animal from February through June 2006. Usable data was recovered from 27 of the animals. The scientists’ focus was on interactions between individuals rather than incidence and transmission of the tumor.

The scientists found that during the mating season, contact between individual devils was more likely to be between males and females while outside the breeding period, female-female encounters were more common. At all times, interactions between males were “relatively uncommon.”

As few as 10,000 mature adult devils remain, confined to the Australian island-state of Tasmania, according to the IUCN. The tumor is found across 60 percent of the devil’s territory, with the group predicting a further decline in the animals’ population of 70 percent over the next decade.

While the studied population revealed one male who was a hub between many individuals, the researchers were unable to determine a specific age or sex-group that is more likely to interact with other devils.

“Our results suggest that there is limited potential to control the disease by targeting highly connected age or sex classes,” the researchers wrote. Because all the devils were connected, “The disease is capable of spreading to each individual in the population once one individual is infected.”

Australia has lifted protection levels for the Tasmanian devil, the world's largest surviving marsupial carnivore, from vulnerable to endangered.

The devil population, which is found on the island state of Tasmania, has been decimated by a facial tumour disease.

The number of Tasmanian devils in the wild is thought to have fallen by up to 70% since the mid-1990s.

The new conservation status will give the animals greater protection under national environment laws.

Strong action

The devils have been ravaged by an outbreak of facial tumours the size of small golf balls.

The cancers are mostly concentrated around the mouth and head. The disease is contagious and is spread among groups of devils through biting.

Tumour cells are not neutralised by the marsupial's immune system because of a lack of genetic diversity among the population that exists in the wild only in Tasmania.

Infected animals die within months of the symptoms first appearing. Despite intense scientific research, a cure has not been found.

Australia's Environment Minister Peter Garrett said that strong action was being taken to find out more about this mysterious disease and to stop its spread.

Some estimates have suggested their numbers are falling fast and could be as low as 20,000.
