Dog walkers are on the lookout for an elusive big cat dubbed the Panther of Preston Park.
Residents are on their guard after sightings of the mysterious cat, which one expert has identified as a black leopard, also often known as a panther.
Yesterday walkers in Preston Park were keeping an eye out for the mysterious creature.
Chloe Hippert, 29, a paramedic who lives in Warleigh Road, Brighton, said: "My neighbour's cat was attacked last week.
"We had thought it was a fox but when we saw this story it did get everyone wondering.
"I suppose it's a bit of an urban myth that panthers are running around Brighton, but people say they have seen them."
Ben Wallis, 32, a mortgage adviser, was walking his parents' dog Molly.
He said: "I think it is a bit of a tall story but you never know. I am sure the lady involved is convinced but I won't be too fearful about walking in Preston Park at night for that reason, although I'll keep an eye out for anything unusual.
"I'm quite sceptical but will be prepared to believe it when I see it."
The latest sighting was by Margaret Vidler, of Loder Road, Brighton, who came face-to-face with a large black cat in her back garden.
Mrs Vidler and her dog Mutley were terrified after their close encounter on Sunday.
Neil Arnold, who runs Kent Big Cat Research, said numerous big cats are probably living in the area.
