A pet dog has done her own bit of saving during tough financial times - by swallowing some of the family's money.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier Storm kept some of six-year-old Ellie Clarke's piggy bank money safe by snaffling the coins as she counted up her savings.
Vets who x-rayed the three-year-old dog eventually managed to remove three 2p coins, leaving Storm with a safe recovery.
Owner Debra Clarke, 39, from Leicester, said the saga started when her daughter Ellie emptied her piggy bank on to the floor.
She said: "I first discovered what Storm had done when I heard Ellie shout, 'Mum, Storm pinched my money!'. I wasn't sure if Storm had eaten any coins but she just looked at me with a guilty look."
Single mum Miss Clarke said she phoned Leicester's PDSA PetAid hospital for advice and then had to take Storm in for treatment.
X-rays revealed some strangely familiar circular objects in Storm's large intestine.
Luckily fluids and liquid paraffin helped remove the savings without any surgery, leaving no lasting damage.
The sixpence fortune Storm managed to save has now gone towards boosting the PDSA's coffers, the charity said.
PDSA veterinary surgeon Richard Ewers said: "Our veterinary team were all intrigued to find out if Storm had swallowed anything and were very surprised to see the coins on the x-rays!"
