Pollack's name changed to Colin

Sunday, April 5, 2009

Next time you're in a supermarket and too embarrassed to ask for a kilo of pollack, just ask for Colin.

This isn't a late April fool, one of the country's leading chains has changed the name of pollack to Colin. No, really.

Sainsbury's is promoting the seafood in selected stores as it tastes similar to cod, is more sustainable and costs less.

Pollack will go on sale in limited edition packaging inspired by artist Jackson Pollock and designed by Red Or Dead fashion guru, Wayne Hemingway.

But instead of the English name, it will be called 'Colin' – the French word for hake, which is another member of the cod family.

Hemingway said: 'As a keen fisherman, it seems daft that pollack isn't more popular, particularly when it's readily available off our own coast, tastes great and is cheaper than cod. Image really is everything.

So to help Colin stand out on shelves, we've used bold, bright colours and a design that is cheekily inspired by another well-known pollack – artist Jackson Pollock.'

Pollack fillets are extremely popular in France, which is one of Britain's biggest customers in terms of fish exports.

Across the channel, the fish is known as 'lieu jaune' which is unlikely to be mistaken for a rude word by shoppers.
