Top 10 animal escapes

Ten best examples of when animals get away
Monday, May 11, 2009

Following the news that a zoo in Australia was evacuated after an 'ingenious' orangutan short-circuited an electric fence and hopped a wall surrounding her enclosure, here's ten more of our favourite animals on the lam.

Daredevil cat escapes from drain... and from rescuers
A cat stuck on a ledge spurned the attempts of rescuers dangling ropes 'dipped in pet food', before leaping into icy waters and paddling to the wall ladder.

McDonald's stampede as cows escape
Cows stampeded a McDonald's restaurant after escaping from their trailer as the driver stopped for a bite to eat. The eight cows ran amok when the rear door of the trailer opened as it pulled into the burger joint in Utah.

Crocodile in 12th floor escape bid
A crocodile survived a fall from the 12th floor of a Russian apartment block after making an escape bid. Diving out of the window had apparently become a habit for the crocodile, with concerned neighbours saying it was the third time he had used that method to flee.

Escaped chimp snacks, cleans
Judy, an escaped 120lb chimp from the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas, made herself at home, raiding a kitchen cupboard and cleaning a toilet before finally falling asleep on sedatives on top of a fridge.

Help! There's a kangaroo on the track!
A major crash was narrowly avoided at Australia's premier touring car race, the Bathurst 1000, in New South Wales after a kangaroo hopped on to the track. The kangaroo, which emerged in the middle of one of the support races, somehow emerged unscathed from the incident.

Google: now searching for snakes
Google's stated mission – to 'organize the world's information' – hit a slight setback this weekend, when they managed to lose track of a snake, in their own offices. The search giant's Manhattan office was put on alert, with flyers being posted with a picture and description of Kaiser, a three-foot long python, who had been brought into work by an engineer.

Rogue bull in swimming pool adventure
A family in Scotland were looking forward to enjoying their newly built swimming pool - when an unexpected visitor got there first. Their gatecrasher was a bull from a nearby farm, who broke out of its paddock and - while being chased by farm workers - charged its way through a barn and into the pool, on a farm near St Andrews, Fife.

Rogue hamster in cinema escapade
A hamster's trip to the movies turned into something resembling The Great Escape. Hamish the rodent was smuggled into a cinema by his five-year-old owner, Sarah Stokes, who thought he might like Alvin And The Chipmunks. But during the film the pet made a dash for it.

Snakes on a plane as baby pythons escape
Two flights were cancelled after four baby pythons escaped from a container aboard a passenger plane in Australia, leading to a fruitless search for the wayward reptiles. A reptile expert searched for the 6-inch-long snakes - but did not find them. It isn't known if the snakes somehow escaped outside after the plane landed, or if they're still on board somewhere.

Cattle handlers get a bum steer
Three cattle escaped from a transport vessel in Townsville Australia, leading cattle handlers on a two mile chase through the small town. Cattlehandlers managed to round up two of them but one cow evaded capture, running from the boat into the town centre.
