Edinburgh Zoo has announced the return of wolves after a 16-year absence from its animal collection.
Three male European wolves, named Dalls, Puika and Ilknis, have made their way from the Highlands to the capital.
They have been transferred from the Highland Wildlife Park.
One male has stayed behind at the park, where he has been joined by a female in the hope they will form a breeding pair.
Iain Valentine, of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, welcomed the return of the animals to the zoo.
He said: "They are an iconic species and were missed by both visitors and staff when they left the collection."
The wolf was once widespread in Europe but due to hunting, habitat loss and diseases, they are now confined to small pockets in a handful of countries.
The wolf, a creature which often appears in myth and folklore, howls mostly during twilight and when leaving for and returning from a hunt.
They do not, as many believe, howl when there is a full moon.
